PART 1: GENERAL
1.01 GENERAL
A. See plans, finish schedule and interior elevations for location of wall finishes.
B. Units shall have cut in wall color that does not match ceiling color.
C. Paint all exposed surfaces of primed & unprimed steel on exterior including but not limited to exterior stair handrails, lintel
plates, connectors, bollards, fence posts and other such miscellaneous metals.
1.03 REFERENCES
A. ASTM: American Society for Testing and Materials.
B. NPCA: National Paint and Coatings Association.
C. SSPC: Steel Structures Painting Council.
D. IBC: International Building Code.
1.04 DEFINITIONS
A. Conform to ASTM D16 for interpretation of terms in this Section.
B. Coatings will conform to state and local regulations including VOC/VOS rules.
C. Coatings will dry free of streaks and sags.

1.05 SUBMITTALS
A. Section 01 33 00 - Submittal Procedures.
1.Submit manufacturer's technical information for each Product to be used.
2.Submit manufacturer's application instructions including special surface preparation procedures and substrate conditions
requiring special attention.
3.Samples:
a.Submit two of each color in each gloss on 8 ½-inch by 11-inch brush-out cards.
b.Submit two of each stain and varnish finish on wood samples of species to be covered.
1.07 QUALIFICATIONS
A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section with a minimum of 5 years of
documented successful experience.
B. Applicator: Company specializing in performing the Work of this Section with a minimum of 5 years documented
successful experience and approved by the manufacturer.
C. Furnish an affidavit from the paint, stain, or coating manufacturer's authorized representative certifying that the contractor
has adequate knowledge and experience in the successful application of paints, stains, or coatings specified or similar to
those specified.

PART 3: EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that surfaces and substrate conditions are ready to receive Work as instructed by the product manufacturer.
B. Examine surfaces scheduled to be finished prior to commencement of Work. Report conditions that may potentially affect
proper application.
C. Test shop applied primer for compatibility with specified or approved paint systems.
D. Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic moisture meter. Do not apply finishes unless moisture content of
surfaces are below the following maximums:
1. Plaster and Gypsum Wallboard: 12 percent.
2. Masonry, Concrete, and Concrete Unit Masonry: 12 percent.
3. Interior Wood: 15 percent, per ASTM D4442.
E. Commencement of Work will be presumed as acceptance of conditions as being satisfactory.
3.02 PREPARATION
A. Perform preparation and cleaning procedures in accordance with paint manufacturer's instruction and as specified herein for
each particular substrate condition.
B. Provide barrier coats over incompatible primers or remove existing primers and re-prime with the primer specified in the
paint schedule for use on the appropriate substrate.
C. Notify the Architect/Engineer in writing of problems with using the specified coating systems on substrates factory primed.
D. Remove oil and grease prior to mechanical cleaning.

N. Wood:
1. Surfaces will be dry and sanded smooth.
2. Painted wood: Putty nail holes, cracks, and blemishes after undercoater has been applied.
3. Stained wood: Fill nail holes, cracks, and blemishes after staining with filler. Tinted filler will match the color of the
wood or stain.
4. Prime or seal, depending on final finish coat, trimmed edges of doors same as face.
5. Back prime exterior wood before installation of wood.
3.03 PROTECTION
A. Remove and protect hardware, hardware accessories, light fixtures, switch plates, outlet covers, and similar items in place
and not to be finish painted.
B. Reinstall removed items following completion of painting.
3.04 APPLICATION
A. Application of coatings is evidence of acceptance of substrate conditions and that proper surface preparation has been
completed
B. Apply coatings in accordance with manufacturer's directions. Contact Polomyx at 1-800-729-7656 to confirm IPS 25
application and wet and dry mil thicknesses.
C. Apply materials evenly applied without runs or sags, brush marks, laps, streaks, unfinished patches or other blemishes.
D. Tint fillers to match wood where clear finishes are required. Work fillers into grain before set. Wipe excess from surface.
E. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying next coat.
F. Final coats will not be applied until after other trades, whose operations are detrimental to finish painting, have finished in
the areas to be painted.

G. Finish recesses the same as adjoining rooms. Finish other surfaces the same as nearest or adjoining surfaces unless
otherwise shown.
H. Paint surfaces behind movable equipment and furniture same as similar exposed surfaces.
I. Apply floor paint markings, where shown on the Drawings, prior to the final application of sealer specified in Section 03 30
00.
J. Apply additional coats when undercoats, stains, or other conditions show through final coat until coating is of uniform
finish, color and appearance.
K. Surfaces, including edges, corners, crevices, welds, and exposed fasteners, will receive a dry film thickness equivalent to
that of flat surfaces.
L. Sand lightly between each enamel or varnish coat.
M. Finish doors on tops, bottoms, and side edges same as door faces.
N. Omit primer coat on metal surfaces which have been shop-primed.
O. Spot prime metal surface areas where shop priming has not been applied, where shop primer has been breached by
scratches, dents, or similar damage, field welded joints, or where noted otherwise.
P. Paint exposed mechanical, refrigeration, and electrical Work in areas scheduled to be finished.
1. Paint exposed items identical with room, ceiling, or adjacent surface color unless specifically noted otherwise.
2. In Public areas Paint mechanical items including the following:
a. Piping, pipe hangers, and supports.
b. Heat exchangers.
c. Tanks.
d. Ductwork and ductwork insulation.
e. Motors, mechanical equipment, and supports.
f. Accessory items.
g. Interior surfaces of ducts, where visible through registers or grilles.
3. Paint electrical items including the following:
a. Conduit and fittings.
b. Panelboxes.
c. Column mounted receptacles.

3.07 ADJUSTING
A. At the completion of Work of other trades, touch-up and restore damaged or defaced painted surfaces.
3.08 CLEANING
A. Section 01 77 00 3 Closeout Procedures
1. Remove from the site and discard excess paint materials, rubbish, cans, and rags at the end of each workday.
2. Clean window glass and other paint-splattered surfaces, using care not to scratch or otherwise damage finished
surfaces.
3.09 PROTECTION
A. Protect Work finished under this Section and the Work of other trades, whether to be painted or not, against damage by
painting and finishing Work.
B. Correct damage by cleaning, repairing, replacing, and repainting, to the satisfaction of the Architect/Engineer.
C. Provide WET PAINT signs in quantity and locations where finishes have been newly painted.
D. Remove temporary protective wrappings provided by other trades for protection of their Work after completion of painting
operations.
3.10 SCHEDULES
Unless indicated otherwise on Interior Finish Schedule:
A. Typical Paint at Units Shall be a Flat High-Build Paint.
1. Kitchens and Baths at Unit shall be an Eggshell High 3Build Paint.
B. Typical Commons shall be an Eggshell High-Build Paint-Limit to 6 colors which will not match ceiling.
