QUESTION 1 [14 MARKS]
1.1 A farmer wishes to develop a tree plantation. He starts by building a mill and
planting trees in a rectangular fashion around it, so that the mill will be the
centre of the plantation. The mill takes the space of two trees. Each month
he adds another outer shell of trees as demonstrated in the figures.
Determine:
1.1.1 how many trees there are after 4 months. (1)
1.1.2 how many trees there are after n months. (4)
1.1.3 how many months it will take him to have a forest of 550 trees. (4)

QUESTION 2 [25 MARKS]
2.1 The graphs of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥) = −𝑥 + 2 are represented on the
axes below:
2.1.1 Determine the 𝑥-intercepts of 𝑓(𝑥). (2)
2.1.2 Determine the equation of the axis of symmetry of 𝑓(𝑥). (1)
2.1.3 Determine the length of 𝐴𝐵. (2)
2.1.4 Determine the values of 𝑥 for which 𝑓(𝑥) > 0. (2)
2.1.5 Determine the values of 𝑥 for which 𝑓(𝑥). 𝑔(𝑥) < 0. (2)
2.1.6 Give the co-ordinates of the 𝑥 −intercepts of 𝑓(𝑥 − 2). (2)
2.1.7 If the length of MN is given by 𝐿 = −𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 2,
determine the value of 𝑥 which will give the maximum length
of MN. (2)

2.2 Given: 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑥−𝑝 + 𝑞
2.2.1 If the asymptotes of 𝑓 intersect at the point (−4; 3),
determine the values of p and q. (2)
2.2.2 Determine the equation of the line of symmetry of 𝑓(𝑥)
which has a positive gradient. (2)
2.2.3 The graph of 𝑓(𝑥) is translated 4 units right and 3 units
down, to create the graph of 𝑔(𝑥). Write down the equation
of 𝑔(𝑥). (2)
2.3 The sketch below shows the graph ℎ(𝑥) = 3. 2 𝑥−𝑝 + 𝑞:
2.3.1 Write down the range of ℎ(𝑥). (1)
2.3.2 Determine the value of 𝑝 and 𝑞. (3)
2.3.3 Hence, write down the co-ordinates of 𝐶, the 𝑦-intercept
of ℎ(𝑥). (2)
