CHP. 8 NATURAL VEGETATION AND WILDLIFE
NOTES
Learning Objectives
• Knowledge about the different types of Natural vegetation and wildlife.
• To know about the climatic conditions required for their growth and survival.
• To analyze the importance of Natural vegetation and wildlife.
Keywords
• Biome- a natural habitat where plants and animals with common characteristics live in
harmony.
• Shrubs – short bushy plants which grow in dry regions
• Coniferous trees – tall softwood trees with needle-like leaves.
• Lumbering - the process of cutting, transporting, and processing trees into lumber or other
wood products.
• Taiga – a boreal or snow forest
• Tundra – a vast treeless region of Artic which is permanently frozen.
• Savanna – grasslands found in tropical Africa.
Answer the following questions: -
KNOWLEDGE
1. List the animals found in tropical deciduous forests.
Ans. Tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, bears, monkeys, deer, rhinoceroses and snakes.
2. Name the vegetation found in tropical evergreen forests.
Ans. Hardwood trees, mahogany, ebony, rosewood, sandalwood, rubber and bamboo.
UNDERSTANDING
1. Describe the Mediterranean forests.
Ans. Forest grows well in warm temperate regions on the western margins of the continents.
● They are found in coastal regions in Europe, Asia and Africa bordering the
Mediterranean Sea.
● They are also found in southern California, central Chile, and southwestern Australia.
● These regions have a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean area.
● This is why they are known as Mediterranean forests.
1. Describe the wildlife in the tundra region?
Ans. The wildlife of the tundra region comprises polar bears, snow leopards, Artic foxes,
musk oxen, reindeer, and caribous.
● Seals, whales, and walruses that have two tusks are also found here.
UAE CONNECTIONS
1. What is the significance of the Ghaf tree in the UAE’s natural ecosystem?
Ans: The Ghaf tree is crucial in the UAE’s desert ecosystem because it provides
shade, prevents soil erosion, and serves as a habitat for wildlife. It is also a
drought-tolerant species, able to survive in arid conditions with minimal water.
APPLICATION
Compare two types of natural vegetation—tropical rainforests and grasslands.
What adaptations have wildlife in these two environments developed to survive?
Provide specific examples of animal adaptations for each environment.
