a) Course overview and description

The course is designed to give electrical engineering students understanding and learning of
computer application to power system. The computer application such MATLAB is used to solve
power system load flow problem through different iterative techniques.

Having successfully completed the module, the students will demonstrate general skills in
MATLAB software and be able to:

 write MATLAB codes to solve Newton Raphason equation [PO1];


 write MATLAB codes to solve Gauss elimination equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Gauss – Seidel equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Euler equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Runge – Kutta 4th order equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Node admittance matrix equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Load flow analysis equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve State estimation equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Load forecasting equation [PO1];
 write MATLAB codes to solve Time series equation [PO1]; and

e) Expectations of Students

a) Attend two (2) hours of lectures per week;

b) Turn in assignments and term papers as deemed fit by the instructors;

c) Complete continuous assessment which comprises quizzes and mid-semester test; and

d) Complete a two-hour comprehensive final examination at the end of the semester.

k) Contemporary Issues and Industrial Relevance

The relevance of power systems to socio-economic development of a nation cannot be over


emphasised. Being able to model power system problem with computer application will help to
achieve real time simulation.
