1. You are provided with the following:
0.5M sodium hydroxide solution A
2.0M Hydrochloric acid solution B
An unknown mass of sodium carbonate solid D
You are required to determine:
The mass of sodium carbonate
The molar heat of reaction of sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid.
Procedure 1
Fill the burette with solution B. Transfer 50cm3 of 2.0M Hydrochloric acid, solution B into 100cm3 beaker. Measure
the temperature of the solution after every half minute and record the values in table 1 below. At exactly 2 ½
minutes, add all of solid D to the acid. Stir the mixture gently with a thermometer. Measure the temperature of the
mixture after every half- minute and record the values in Table 1.
Retain the mixture for use in procedure 2.

a) i) Plot a graph of temperature (y-axis) versus time (3mks)

ii) Use your graph to determine the change in temperature T (1mk)
iii) Calculate the heat change for the reaction (assume that the density of the mixture is 1g/cm3 and the specific
heat capacity of the mixture is 4.2KJ-1K-1) (1mk)
Procedure 2
Rinse the burette thoroughly and fill it with sodium hydroxide solution A. Transfer the mixture retained in
procedure 1 into a 250cm3 volumetric flask. Add distilled water to the mark. Label this solution C. Using a
pipette filler and a pipette, transfer 25cm3 portions of solution C into a 250ml conical flask. Add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator and titrate against sodium hydroxide solution A. Record your results in table 2. Repeat
the procedure to obtain two more readings to complete the table.
