1. (一) 我發現自己特別想去的地方，總是古代文化和文人留下較深腳印的所在， 說明我心底的
山水並不完全是自然山水而是一種「人文山水」。這是中國歷史文化的悠久魅力和它對我的
長期薰染造成的， 要擺脫也擺脫不了。每到一個地方，總有一種沈重的歷史氣壓罩住我的全
身，使我無端地感動，無端地喟嘆。 常常像傻瓜一樣木然佇立著，一會兒滿腦章句，一會兒
滿腦空白。我站在古人一定站過的那些方位上，用與先輩差不多的黑眼珠 打量著很少會有變
化的那些自然景觀，靜聽著與千百年前沒有絲毫差異的風聲鳥聲，心想，在我居留的大城市
裡有很多貯存古籍的 圖書館、講授古文化的大學，而中國文化的真實步履卻落在這山重水
複，莽莽蒼蒼的大地上。大地默默無言，只要來一、二個有悟性 的文人一站立，它封存久遠
的文化內涵也就能嘩的一聲奔瀉而出；文人本也萎靡柔弱，只要被這種奔瀉所裹捲，倒也能
吞吐千年。 結果，就在這看似平常的佇立瞬間，人、歷史、自然渾沌地交融在一起了……

2. (二) 世紀交替常被視為是一個重大改變的時刻，因此每次面臨一個新世紀來臨時， 人們總忍
不住不斷推測未來的情況。十八世紀進入十九世紀時，拿破崙大軍橫掃歐陸，眼看強權即將
統制一切； 但隨後的法國大革命卻帶來自由、平等、博愛的思想，深深影響歐美民主發展的
方向。十九世紀進入二十世紀時， 也有部份人士大作預言，分析二十世紀絕不會再出現戰
爭、災難等悲劇，但兩年後，當時被視為西方高科技代表作的「鐵達尼號」， 卻在處女航時
慘遭沈沒，而兩次慘絕人寰的世界大戰，更是二十世紀最明顯的標記。未來，其實是不可預
測的。

雖然如此，但我們身處世紀轉換時刻，確實是在一個空前的變化之中。此一革命性的變化包
括世界人口暴增、 經濟急速發展、通訊速度加快、資訊工業興盛、生化科技進步等，種種情
形都將對二十一世紀人類的思想和生活方式構成重大挑戰。

When All Else Fails,Send a Card

What do must Americans do to show their concern when a friend is sick or to express their joy
when someone marries, graduates ,or has a bady? They send a greeting card.People send cards
to their family and friends to celebrate personal occasions like birthdays and anniversaries and
religious holidays like Christmas and Easter as well as other special holidays like Valentine's Day
,Mother's Day ,and Father's Day.On these occasions,people often give other gifts as well from
candy and flowers to larger presents.Greeting cards are a flourishing business as Americans
spend over seven billion dollars a year to send cards.The top five card-sending holidays are
Christmas,Valentine's Day,Easter,Mother's Day,nad Father's Day. The top five non-holiday
reasons people send cards are birthday ,friendship,anniversary,get well,and sympathy.
Some people think that Valentine's Day is only for lovers(husbands and wives or boyfriends and
girlfriends),but this is false .In America,elementary school students bring valentines to exchange
with their classmates which have messages like "Be my Valentine,"or"I like you" They always
bring valentines to their teachers,too.Valentines are exchanged with friends ,family,and just
about everybody.It is a friendly gesture that is not synonymous with romantic love.Most

Greeting cards are popular because they are colorful,well designed,and can communicate
exactly what we want to say . They can be sent through the mail or delivered in person.They can
be funny or serious depending on our mood.We have such a variety of choices when we go to a
card shop.Every type of card is available to suit our specific needs:cards to comfort families of
disaster victims,cards to apologize for rude behavior,cards to celebrate new babies,new jobs,
new homes,exciting vacations,50thbirthdays,or current relationships,or cards to express sympathy
to a recently divorced person.There are cards for every family member and for almost every age
from a baby's first birthday to someone over one hundred years old.Cards convey every kind of
emotional response to every kind of situation.
These days of electronic media make it easier to choose and send cards .We can send electronic
cards by e-mail,or we can use our computer to choose designs and messages from traditional
cards and have them send by a company for us.Electronic cards come with flashing
lights,musical messages,and a great choice of designs from animated graphics to traditional
pictures.
But no matter how we send our cards,we often count on them to express our deepest
feelings.Sometimes it's difficult by ourselves to come up with just the right words to say what we
want to say in some situations. But we can often find a striking card with an appropriate message
to do the job for us.This is why people can spend a lot of time browsing in a card store just
looking at dozens of cards and reading the messages inside.Somewhere in the store will be just
