Supplement FOR WEEK 1
SEQUENCE – is a set of numbers, letters, figures/shapes, pictures/drawing that following a certain rule or pattern.
Parts of a sequence with notations
a1 – First term
a2 – second term and so on
d – common difference (if the pattern is adding/subtracting)
r – common ratio (if the pattern is multiplying)
an – nth term or the Last term
Type of sequence
FINITE SEQUENCE- a sequence with first and last term
EXAMPLE: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, 10, 15, 20 --- 1 and 5 are the first terms and last terms are 4 and 20
INFINITE SEQUENCE- a sequence with first term but no end term. Usually denoted by . . .
EXAMPLE: 1, 2, 3, 4, … and 5, 10, 15, 20, …
IT’S TIME TO GENERATE
Given the general rule/explicit formula, write the first three (3) terms of the sequence.
an = 2n + 3
NOTE: n = 1 for the first term(a1)
n = 2 for the second term(a2), and
n = 3 for the third term(a3)
Substitute the value of n to the formula
an = 2n + 3 an = 2n + 3 an = 2n + 3
a1 a2 a3
n=1 n=2 n=3
Solution: Solution: Solution:
an = 2n + 3 an = 2n + 3 an = 2n + 3
a1 = 2(1) + 3 a2 = 2(2) + 3 a3 = 2(3) + 3
a1 = 2 + 3 a2 = 4 + 3 a3 = 6 + 3
a1 = 5 a2 = 7 a3 = 9
first term (a1) is 5 second term (a2) is 7 third term (a3) is 9
First 3 terms of the sequence are: 5, 7, 9
Supplement FOR WEEK 2
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE – a sequence in which each term after the first is obtained by adding a constant number to the
preceding term. The constant number is called the COMMON DIFFERENCE (d).
Ex. 1. 5, 8, 11, 14 2. 10, 7, 4, 1
Two examples above are examples of arithmetic sequence because the DIFFERENCES between any two
consecutive terms are THE SAME. (For no. 1….. d = 3 For no. 2….. d = -3 )
In arithmetic sequence, there’s what we call ARITHMETIC MEANS. It is the term/s between
any two NON-CONSECUTIVE terms in an arithmetic sequence.
Example:
Arithmetic sequence 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22
Arithmetic means 6 is the arithmetic mean of 2 and 10
6 and 10 are arithmetic means of 2 and 14
6, 10, 14 and 18 are arithmetic means of 2 and 22
14 is the arithmetic mean of 10 and 18
Insert the indicated arithmetic mean/s in each given terms of an arithmetic sequence
Ex. 1 . 3 and 9 (2) insert two 3, ___, ____, 9 answer 3, 5, 7, 9
2. 1 and 21 (1) insert one 1, ___, 21 answer 1, 11, 21
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE FORMULA an = a1 + (n – 1) d
Where: an is the nth term
a1 is the first term of the sequence
n is the number of term (up to the last term or nth term)
d is the common difference (constant/the same number that we add or subtract)
Example:
1. What is the 25th term in the sequence 3, 7, 11, 15,…
Step 1: identify the following:
an = ? (ano daw pang 25th number? Wala pa, kaya question mark pa)
a1 = 3 (unang number sa sequence)
n = 25 (ilang number lahat hanggang makarating sa pang 25th? Malamang 25)
d=4 (ilan ang pagitan sa bawat number? Note: pag plus ang ginawa di positive 4 and d,
kung minus naman ang nangyari di negative 4 (- 4) dapat ang d)
Step 2: Substitute the Given to the Arithmetic Sequence Formula
an = ? a1 = 3 n = 25 d=4
an = a1 + (n – 1) d
a25 = 3 + (25 – 1) 4
Step 3: Solve
a25 = 3 + (25 – 1) 4
a25 = 3 + (24) 4
a25 = 3 + 96
a25 = 99
therefore, the 25th term in the sequence 3, 7, 11, 15,… is 99
Supplement FOR WEEK 4
ARITHMETIC AND GEOMETRIC SERIES
A series is the sum of the terms of a sequence.
An arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence while
a geometric series is the sum of the terms of a geometric sequence.
ARITHMETIC SERIES
ARITHMETIC SERIES FORMULA
n n
Sn = [ a +a ]
2 1 n
or Sn =
2
[ 2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
Where: Sn —sum of nth term Where: Sn —sum of nth term
n -- number of terms to be added n -- number of terms to be added
a 1— first term a 1— first term
a n – last term d – common difference
NOTE: pwedeng gamitin ang unang formula kung alam mo ang n (number ng pagpaPLUSin) at ang a1 (unang
term sa sequence) at an (huling term sa sequence)
Kung hindi mo alam ang pang huling term sa sequence, pwedeng gamitin ang pangalawang formula, basta’t
alam mo ang d (common difference).
Example:
Determine the sum of the following using the formula above
1. Find the sum of the first 30 terms of the sequence, 4, 6, 8, 10, …
Since, hindi natin alam ang panghuli (ung pang 30th term), 2nd formula gagamitin natin
Step 1: identify the values of Sn, a1, n and d
Sn=¿? n = 30 a 1= 4 d= 2
Step 2: substitute the values to the formula then solve and simplify
n
Sn= [ 2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2
30
S30= [ 2(4)+ ( 30−1 ) 2 ]
2
S30=15 [ 8+ (29 ) 2 ]
S30=15 [ 8+58 ]
S30=15 [ 66 ]
S30=990 the sum of the first 30 terms of the sequence 4,6,8,10, … is 990.
2. Determine the sum of all integers from 1 to 100, that is 1+2+3+4+5+……..+99+100.
Since we know the first term is 1 and last term is 100, we can use the first formula
Step 1: identify the values of Sn, n, a1 and an
Sn=¿? n = 100 a 1= 1 a n= 100
Step 2: substitute the values to the formula then solve and simplify
n
Sn= [ a1 +a n ]
2
100
S100 = [ 1+100 ]
2
S100 =50(101)
S100 =5050 the sum all integers from 1-100 is 5,050
GEOMETRIC SERIES
GEOMETRIC SERIES FORMULA
For FINITE geometric sequence where r ≠ 1
n
a 1 (1−r )
Sn =
1−r
Where: Sn – sum of nth term
a1 – first term
n – number of terms to be added
r – comm0n ratio
Example:
What is the sum of the first 6 terms of the geometric sequence 1, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243?
Identify a1 = 1 r=3 n=6
Substitute
6
1(1−3 ) 1(1−729) 1(−728) −728
Sn = Sn = Sn = Sn = Sn=364
1−3 −2 −2 −2
If I may suggest, You better manually add it, it’s easier that wat. Hehehehhehehe :)
Sn = n(a1) if r = 1
Example:
What is the sum of the first 55 terms of the geometric sequence 5, 5, 5, 5, …?
Since r = 1 and n = 55, a1 = 5
Sn = n(a1)
S55 = 55(5)
S55 = 275
Sn = a1 if r = -1 and n is ODD
Example:
What is the sum of the first 103 terms of the geometric sequence 9, -9, 9, -9, 9, -9, …?
Since r = -1 and n = 103 (which is ODD number), therefore S n = a1 (no need to compute, the answer is the first term)
Sn = a1
S103 = 9
Sn = 0 if r = -1 and n is EVEN
Example:
What is the sum of the first 500 terms of the geometric sequence 9, -9, 9, -9, 9, -9, …?
Since r = -1 and n = 500 (which is EVEN number), therefore S n = 0 (no need to compute, the answer is zero)
Sn = 0
S500 = 0
For INFINITE geometric sequence where - 1 ≤ r ≤ 1, r should be greater than – 1 but less than 1
a1
Sn =
1−r
Example:
1 1 1 1
What is the sum to infinity of , , , , …? a1 = 1/2 r = 1/2
2 4 8 16
a1 1/2 1 /2
Sn = S∞ = S∞ = S∞ =1
1−r 1−1/2 1 /2
