Course Contents:
 Polymerization: Polymers - Classifications - Polymerization - Mechanisms - Chain
Polymerization (Free radical, ionic and Ziegler Natta). Polymerizationtechniques - Bulk,
Solution, Suspension, Emulsion, Solid and Liquid Phase.Polycondensation Techniques -Melt,
Solution and Interfacial.
 Important Polymers: Synthesis, properties and Applications : PolyethyleneLDPE & HDPE),
Polyacrylonitrile, Polymethyl methacrylate, Polyesters (PET),Polyamides - Nylon 6, Nylon 6,6,
Polyurethane, ,Polyvinylchloride,Polypropylene, Polytetrafluoroethylene.
 Characterization of Polymers: Degree of Polymerization - Glass Transitiontemperature -
Factors affecting Tg - Determination of Tg - Dilatometer andthermomechanical methods.
Determination molecular weights -Weight average- light scattering, Number average - End group
analysis, and Viscosity average- determination of molecular wt. & effect of molecular wt. on
properties of polymer/fiber. Configuration and conformation of molecules, practicalimportance
of chain flexibility. Ubbelholde viscometer. Thermal characterizationof TGA and DSC.
 Polymer Processing and Reuse of Polymers: Additives of Polymers -Fillers,plasticizers,
Antioxidants, UV Stabilizers and Coloring agents. Polymer processing methods - Moulding,
Extrusion, Calendaring and Film casting.Reuse of acrylic and polypropylene wastes. Recovery
from Polyester and Nylon.
 Polymer Degradation: Definition, types, different factors affecting polymer degradation,
stabilizers etc.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are --


(i) Developing students’ proficiency in polymer Chemistry.
(ii) Systematic and coherent understanding of the fundamental concepts in polymer science and all
other related allied chemistry fields.
(iii) To understand configuration and conformation.
(iv) Physical and chemical characteristics of important polymers and their uses.
(v) Characterize TGA, DSC.
(vi) Understanding the Polymer processing and reuse.
Learning Outcomes:Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to

i. Define, and Explain polymer, macromolecules, classification of polymer on the basis of


different criteria.
ii. Predict reaction products for common reactions.
iii. Discuss and analyze mechanism and kinetics of addition polymerization (cationic and
anionic polymerizations).
iv. Define, discuss andcompare poly-condenstionreactions, additionreactions,mechanism,
andkinetics ofpolycondesations.
v. Discuss,mechanism andkinetics ofcopolymerization,determine reactivityratio.
vi. Understand, anddescribe polymersolubility, theoriesof polymer solution.
vii. Describe &compare theaverage molecularweight, determinepolymer molecularweight
usingvarious methods,calculate the degreeof polymerization.
viii. Prepare, explain,and identify differenttypes of polymer.
