II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Mrs. Santos is buying a house and lot that cost ₱1, 200,000 with
an equity amounting to 30% of the cost. How much is the equity?

To think of the question: 30% of ₱1, 200,000 is how much?

To solve the problems, here are the steps to follow:
1. Write an equation
30% x ₱1, 200,000 = n
Rate x Base = Percentage
2. Express the percent as decimal or fraction.
0.30 x ₱1, 200,000 = n
3. Multiply
0.30 x ₱1, 200,000 = 360,000

4. Answer
Mrs. Santos pays an equity amounting of ₱360,000.00
In the problem above:
→ 30% is called the RATE. Rate is the ratio of a number to 100. It is the
quantity followed by the percent (%) sign.
→ ₱1, 200,000is the BASE. Base is the number representing the whole.
It isthe number from which the percentage is taken.
→ The answer ₱360,000is called the PERCENTAGE. Percentage is
thepart of the base taken.

There are three (3) types of problems involving percent namely:

1. Finding percentage of a number
2. Finding the rate or percent
3. Finding the base

P
R B
𝑷 𝑷
P =R X B R= B=
𝑩 𝑹
4
→ The Techan’s Triangle above can help you remember the three
formulas.
→ To find the Percentage (P) cover P; since R x B are next to each
other,it means multiplication.

DISCUSSION:

PERCENTAGE (P) is the number or amount that represents a

part of a whole.
Percentage = Base x Rate or P = B x R

RATE (R) is the number compared to 100. Usually has either

a percent sign (%) or the word “percent” with it.
𝑃
Rate (R) = Percentage (P) or R =
𝐵
Base (B)

BASE (B) is the that represents the whole or entire amount.

𝑃
Base (B) = Percentage (P) or B =
𝑅
Rate (R)

1. FINDING THE PERCENTAGE (P)

Example No. 1 Find 75% of 80

→ We can solve the problem in two ways.

Using Decimal Using a Proportion
75% of 80 = n Rate =Percentage
Base
0.75 x 80 = n 75 𝑛 75
= Think: 75%=
60 = n 100 80 100
 Change the rate to 100 80
decimal. 100n=6000
100𝑛 6000
=
100 100
n = 60

5
→ Answer: 75% of 80 is 60

2. FINDING THE RATE (R)

Example No. 2 36 is what percent of 60?

→ We can solve the problem in two ways.

→ Think: n% of 60 = 36

Rate Base Percentage

Using Fraction Using a Proportion
n% of 60 = 36 Rate = Percentage
Base
𝑛 n x 60 = 60n
x 60 = 36
100
60𝑛 𝑛 36
= 36 = n:100= 36:60
100 100 60
60n = 36 x 100
60𝑛 3600𝑛
= 100 x 36 = 3600
60 60 60n = 3600
n =60 60𝑛 3600𝑛
=
60 60
n = 60

→ Answer: 36 is 60% of 60.

3. FINDING THE BASE (B)

Example No. 3 40% of a number is 240. What is the number?

→ We can solve the problem in two ways.

→ Think: 40% of n = 240

Rate Base Percentage

6
Using Decimals Using a Proportion
40% of n = 240 Rate = Percentage
Base
0.4 x n = 240 𝑃
R=
0.4n = 240 𝐵
0.4𝑛 240𝑛 40 240
= =
0.4 0.4 100 𝑛
n = 600 40 : 100 = 240 : n
40 x n = 100 x 240
40n = 24000
40𝑛 24000
=
40 40
n=600
→ Answer: 40% of 600 is 240.
Problem Solving

Example No. 1

In an international conference, 300 people who attended were

Filipinos. If 30% of these were Filipino male professionals, how many
Filipino female professionals were there?

→ Understand:
a. What is asked?
 The number of Filipino female professionals in the international
conference. We are looking for percentage.
b. What are the given facts?
 A total of 300 Filipinos were there. Of the total, 30% were male.
300
→ Plan:

Female: 70% Male: 30%

 If there were 30% male professionals, 100% - 300% = 70%.
 Therefore, 70% comprises the number of female professionals.
 To solve the exact number of female professionals, we can use
the formula for finding the percentage: P = R x B.

7
→ Solve:
Using the formula, we have
P=RxB
= 70% x 300
= 0.70 x 300
= 210 the number of female professionals
→ Answer:
There were 210 Filipino female professionals in the international
conference.
→ Check:
This is one way to know if our answer is correct.
30% x 300 = 0.30 x 300
= 90 the number of male professionals
210 + 90 = 300 total number of Filipino professionals.

Example No. 2

Mia has saved₱3, 150.00 in the past 3 months. If the bike he wanted
to buy is worth ₱9, 000.00what percent of the cost of the bike has
he saved?
→ Understand:
a. What is asked?
 The percent of the bike’s amount that Mia has saved. We are
looking for the rate.
b. What are the given facts?
 She saved ₱3, 150.00. The bike is worth ₱9,000.00
→ Plan:
 Apply the concept of proportion to find the percent of the cost
of the bike.
→ Solve:
Rate = Percentage
Base
n x 9000

n: 100 = 3150 : 9000

100 x 3150
8
n x 9000 = 100 x 3150
9000n = 315000
9000𝑛 315000𝑛
=
9000 9000
n = 35
→ Answer: Mia has saved 35% of the cost of the bike.
→ Check:
This is one way to know if the solution is correct. Let us find 35% of
worth ₱9,000
9000
x 0.35

3150.00 this is the amount Mia has saved

Example No. 3

Twenty-four percent of Jane’s marble collections are blue. If he has

48 blue marbles, how many marbles does he have in all?
→ Understand:
a. What is asked?
 The total number of Jane’s marbles.
b. What are the given facts?
 Jane has 48 blue marbles, which is 24% of the total number of
his marbles.
→ Plan:
 Apply operations on decimals to compute for the total number
of marbles.
→ Solve:
 Translate the sentence in mathematical symbols.

24% of what number is 48?

24% x n = 48

24% x n = 48 0.24 x n =48

0.24n = 48
0.24𝑛 48
=
0.24 0.24
n = 200

9
→ Answer: Jane has 200 marbles in all.
→ Check:
 To check your answer, multiply the base by 24%.
24% x n = 48
24% x 200 = 48
0.24 x 200 = 48
48 = 48
