Introduction to rewind risk models (GER-4223)

• GER-4223 provides update on reliability as to stator and rotor rewinds for

GE generators (both. legacy GE and Alstom).
• Recent years: Increase in forced outage >> need for rewinds.
• Main driver: Age of fleets (followed by operational incidents).
• Reliability models created per cooling technology.
• Typical distribution for rewinds given for stators and rotors.
• Individual recommendations: Individual service/operation history vs.
fleet data.
• Important: Rewind to prevent from forced outage AND as opportunity for
enhancing performance.
• Helps to support outage planning and need for having rewind kit on
stock.
• Available GER 4223 Generator Fleet Experience and Reliability
Whitepaper (gevernova.com).

• Use the proper PPE; at a minimum eye, hearing and hand – Consider disabling system before performing maintenance
protection • Carefully consider 3rd party parts to ensure they meet
• Use insulating handle for brush removal. Do not use bare hands specifications
• Do not wear loose clothing and metallic objects such as jewelry • Check for hydrogen leakage
• Be aware of location hazards: tripping, oily/wet – Ensure levels are below LEL before maintaining
floors etc.
• Check for field ground conditions

GEK 111680 Updates in Rev D

GE Vernova has updated our risk assessment for solid or unbored rotors.

Unbored rotors have fewer NDT requirements that similar bored rotors; however, unbored impulse
rotors are not maintenance-free as they age

Transition to solid rotors was complete in the late 1990’s

Rotors are engineered with a damage-tolerant or safe-life approach, assuming material properties
and a finite quantity and severity of:
– Start-stop cycles
– Load changes
– Accumulated exposure

Operation outside these conditions, or within these parameters for a time period longer than
planned introduces risk.

Inspection intervals are set to detect issues prior to them preventing a limited return to service.

Live Outage | Why Live Outage?
WHAT IS
LIVE OUTAGE?
Live Outage combines GE’s proprietary outage
procedures and processes with mobile digital
technology, replacing the former paper-based
field execution method.
Now, instead of maintaining historical, paper-
based documentation, the process
is fully digitized and enables
real-time feedback, improvement and progress
tracking.

•WHY LIVE OUTAGE?

• Create an integrated and scaled standard work practice for the
entire field execution team.
• Simplify the complexity of the tasks at hand.
• Improve the safety, quality and efficiency of the outage process
for the benefit of our customers.

Struggles

The beautiful chaos of Fall 2023 Training

- Speedy rollout - New subset of FEs and craft

- Improved tools: bad packaging, lack of training - Technical training on app and tools
- Late updates to schedule templates - Setting of expectations
- First season trust-building in planning support

Usage of app Identification of program issues and fixes

- FE & super usage for planning and reference vs - App functionality and ease of use
millwright usage at point of work - Some tooling struggles
- Restart after long lulls of clean and inspect or repairs - Content improvement and re-structure
- Customer view and engagement (from our side)

Performance and feedback Planning support from Value Stream (Pat Miller)

- Positive reviews from mechanics & FEs on tools and content; - In depth scope review and technical guidance
from SMs/CSLs on planning support - Contingency planning
- Safety, quality, delivery metrics trending up - Best practices from the fleet
- First 12 months “pressure test” passed - Individualized ongoing planning and execution support
- “Mini-LAWO”

Tools Live Outage application

- Very positive feedback on tools from site personnel - Content and media truly tailored to D11s and well formatted
- Valve disassembly on site is significantly improved (disassembly - Visual Management packages
from casings, valve table, CV disassy) - Ties together planning (schedule), execution (checklists with
- Increased predictability of scope execution media), tooling (written instructions & videos), and technical
drawings (viz management)
