Executive Summary

The research presented an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the visitors experience and
expectation of Bangladesh national museum. These data, therefore, offer an opportunity to look
at the improvement of the museum and its visitors.Bangladesh National Museum is the mirror of
Bangladesh's past glorious history and civilization. It is the repository of our culture and heritage
of thousands’ years old. Located at Shahbagh, Dhaka, very close to Dhaka University
Campus. Bangladesh National Museum started its humble journey in 1913 with a single room,
which is now one of the largest museums of South Asia. It is a four-storied building with a total
floor space of 202, 116 sq. feet. The history of Bangladesh National Museum is eventful and
glorious. The purpose of the paper is to find out what is it that tourists want from Bangladesh
National Museum and art galleries experience. For the purpose of this paper we have carried out
primary research in November, December and January in 2022, in the area of Bangladesh
National Museum including the sample of 100 more tourists. The aim of the research was to
examine visitors experience and expectation towards museum and art galleries. For collecting
data we have used method of interviewing who have visited Bangladesh National Museum. It is
evident that there is a gap between real experiences and tourists expectations. Tourists expect
innovations so museum and art galleries managements have to apply new, more effective
marketing strategies such as to overcome existing business practice. It could be the path for the
increasing number of visitors flow and revenues as well as long term sustainability.

Chapter-1
Introduction

1.1 Background of the study

Since the earliest times, there have been many factors that lead people to travel. Among these
factors, especially the religious ones have been in the forefront since the middle age. Therefore,
travelling for religious purposes started to become significant among all travels. One of the aims
of religious journeys is one’s desire to worship in this places. The other important aim is one’s
desire to visit sacred places and holy shrines no matter which religion he or she belongs to. In
line with these aims, throughout history people have visited many different places of religious
and scientific attractiveness. Among these attractions, hold on important place. In general,
museums are defined as “places and building in which artistic and scientific works or useful
objects for art and science are preserved and available for public viewing” draws attention to the
fact that today the scope of the definition of museum has expanded in term of tourism and has
also covered places of visitors interest.Museum experiences that are considered as tourist
experiences are a transition or exchange between the museum and its visitors discussed the
experience expectations of museum visitors in their study. They identified it as comfort and
entertainment, cultural entertainment, self-identification, escape and historical remembrance. It
has been determined in the studies that museum experiences differ according to the demographic
characteristics of the visitors and the dimensions of the experience also affect the visitor
satisfaction.

1.2 Importance of the study

The fact that the scope of museums has expanded and they becoming important visitor
attractions have contributed to the importance of managing those areas as well as meeting the
expectations of the visitors over time. Museum administrators are obliged to ensure visitors
satisfaction particularly by capturing their imagination. Within this context, while taking
measures not only to improve museums but also to increase the satisfaction level of visitors, it is
of great importance to take into account of what expectations the visitors of museums have
during these visits and in which direction of their perceptions have developed. Although
museums have become complex and important tourist attractions today,it is observed that not
many studies have been conducted on the expectations and satisfaction of the visitors. However,

9|Page
it is known that having little or no feedback from the visitors will fail to guide the museum
administrations. Thus, the current study aims to find out and compare the expectations and
experience of both domestic and foreign tourists who visited Bangladesh National Museum. It is
considered that the findings of the study will provide the museum administration with some
leading insights and will guide further research to be conducted in this field in the near future.

Chapter 2
Review of literature

Literature from various sides and contexts have been reviewed form conducting the study on
Bangladesh National Museum: Visitors experience and expectation. In home and abroad this part
of the study makes it to investigate contents in the light of contribution for the researchers to
assist them to draw some valid and reliable literature have been reviewed.

2.1 Theory grounding the study

This study is underpinned by the experience economy theory. Proponents of this theory argue
that experience economy is built on four experiential domains or realms: entertainment means
desire to enjoy, education means desire to learn, escapist means desire to go and do ‘something’,
and aesthetic means desire to be in a certain place. Theoretically, the theory posits that
experience is a good starting point and an important factor that aids in understanding customer
perception of a product or service attraction. These studies have internationalized the experience
types and developed different scales for examining the relationships among visitor perception,
cruiser experience, golf tourist entertainment, satisfaction, intention to recommend and others.
For example, a recent study on museum tourist experience, found that the four experiential
dimensions determined museum tourist expectation, which significantly predicted future
behaviors. According to the theory, it was important for customers to encounter a unique
experience in order to maximize their satisfaction. As such, for museum tourists within context
to be satisfied, they needed to have experience through encounters with the artifacts and
paintings in the museum.

10 | P a g e
2.2 Museum tourism and context of the study

The most profound definition of a museum was proposed by the International Council of
Museums. According to International Council of Museums, museums are non-profit- making
permanent institutions meant to provide unique cultural services, for the development of society,
and are open to the public. Museums are for purposes of education, enjoyment, and for people to
experience their cultural environment. Its indicated that the main roles of museums are to protect
cultural heritage and to attract tourists. Thus, museums take custody of the history and culture of
regions and countries, as they ensure the protection and restoration of cultural artifacts, and
elements associated with the historical past. This implies that museums exist for purposes of
education and sober reflection. Generally, museum destinations could be considered as part of
heritage and cultural tourism. Notably, this form of tourism has socioeconomic benefits to all
interested parties. Further, museum tourism increases sales revenue, enhances the standard of
living, promotes customer advocacy, and enhances sustainable competitive advantage within the
hospitality industry. Museums also provide customers with memorable experiences that
stimulate their emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being.

2.3 Museum experience and satisfaction

Museums are perceived to offer both tangible (quantity and quality of services delivered) and
intangible experiences (tourist feelings and motivation) to visitors. Tourism literature has argued
that museums are experiential consumption sites for relaxation, cultural education and learning,
and social interaction. This study upholds the view of that museums present overall ‘product’
experience to visitors. For example, the National Museum of Bangladesh presents the history and
classical art ethnography and classical art, contemporary art and world civilization, natural
history, public education, conservation laboratory as well as to present historical past.
Further, museum experience was a valuable kind of offering for which tourists were willing to
pay. Indeed, when the behaviour of museum visitors and their experiences were understood,
tourist’s attraction to specific tourism destinations would be enhanced. In this circumstance,
several important elements of museum experience, such as collections, displays, and
interpretations influenced visitor satisfaction.

Chapter 3

Visitors experiences and expectations towards museums and art galleries

In this chapter l will show the Visitors experiences and expectations towards museums and art
galleries that are relevant to my research project. This chapter is arranged in such a way that will
help us to better understand and conceptualize my research topic. This chapter also help to make
a better assumption about my research monograph.

3.1 Museum and Tourism

Museums and galleries are the Bangladeshi's most popular visitor attractions. There are over 200
or 300 people visits per day to national museums alone, and over half of the Bangladeshi’s
student visited a museum or gallery in 2022. Museums and galleries are driving economic
growth and local investment because of their centrality to the tourism industry – they are an all-
weather attraction, encourage secondary spending, directly and indirectly create jobs and make
an area more desirable for investment.

3.2 Museum Visitors Expectations

Throughout the world there has been a significant increase in the number of museums since
the 19th century. Along with this period, the number of museum visits has increased and
museums have become important places over this time.No doubt that this situation has played
an Important role in increasing interest in museums both in terms of tourism attractive and
management. In addition, along with the functional diversification of the museums, there has
been an awakened interest over the issues of identifying what expectations the museum
visitors have and finding out whether these expectations are meet or not. Museums, which play
an important role because of being among tourist attractions, are generally known to focus on
education, conservation, exhibition of works. However, it is also obvious that the visitors
expectations of trying such different experiences as entertainment and internal
satisfaction. Therefore, it has been crucial for museums to be able to understand and meet the
expectations of visitor groups who wish to have different experiences from their visits to the

12 | P a g e
museum. In this context, it is an important attempt to involved researchers from different
academic units in the management of some museums with the purpose of understanding the
expectations of people who visit the museums. AT the end study ,it was found out that the
majority of visitors had the expectations of “comfort and entertainment”.

3.3 Visitors expectation from Bangladesh National Museum

As the central repository of Bangladesh and all its artifacts visitors expected more from the
museum. The cu-ration is average, no use of digital HW/Application, very brief information.
Should also have guided tour arrangement for school children and tourist.Collection also needs
to improve.

Here some of the expectation from Bangladesh National Museum:

1. Easy way to entry system
2. Open children play ground
3. Open a restaurant
4. Engaged a tour guider who proper knows about our history and classical art, ethnography and
classical art, natural history, civilization war etc.
5. Proper discuss about the history of art gallery
6. Provide well trained for the employment
7. Ensure proper recreation facility

3.4 The Museum Experience

The Museum of the Bangladeshi’s Revolution brings to life the events, people, and ideas of the
founding of the Bangladesh and inspires a deep appreciation of the importance of the struggle
that established a nation. With original artifacts, immersive galleries, natural history and
recreated historical environments, the experience takes visitors on a chronological journey from
the roots of conflict in the creation of the Bengali Nation. Along the way, visitors learn about the
contemporary art and world civilization, the creation of the Declaration of Independence, the
long years of warfare that achieved victory, and the Revolution’s continuing relevance.

Bangladesh National Museum. About 93% respondents have experience and 7% respondents
have no experience from the Bangladesh National Museum.

30 | P a g e
Suggestions for future studies are as follows:

 As mentioned in the research limitations above, the questionnaire developed by this study
should be further tested and modified in order to enhance the reliability, validity and
application scope.
 Since the statements of Bangladesh National Museum lack a clear definition and
measurement of experience, this study designed a questionnaire of museum visitor
experiences and measured visitor expectations. The research finding not only serves as a
measurement tool for future theoretical validation, but also indicates core factors of different
expectations and further classifies and names them. It should enhance the development of
related theories.
 Ek, Larsen, Hornskov and Mansfeldt suggested that visitor experience is a dynamic
framework, and visitors are active performers and producers. When recording texts of the
visiting experience, this study had the same finding. Therefore, future studies on visitor
experiences or experience expectations should “be there” and use the perspective of the
visitors or be close to them.
 This study demonstrated that visitors’ family life cycles can be related to their museum
experience expectations. Future studies can further probe this phenomenon. Besides, OP&A
(2007) visitor studies and other research suggest that the social experience in a museum is
very important to this generation. Research also suggests that effective marketing for this
generation requires different approaches than those museums typically use.
 The differences and similarities of experience expectations between non-visitors (or
potential visitors) who currently do not enjoy visiting museums, and visitors who enjoy
visiting museums. Since this study did not aim to explore the reasons for any dislike of
visiting museums, there are no more data to analyze non-visitors. However, in visitor studies,
non-visitors are also critical, since museums should not only keep the original visitors, but
also create new visitors, and cause high expectations for the next visit. Therefore, future
studies can study non-visitors, including the gap between their experience expectations and
actual perceptions, as well as causes of the gap.
 The further research might well reveal that, within the general expectations revealed by the
research, there is likely to be much greater complexity when looking at individuals,
reflecting the personal, social and physical contexts discussed in the article.

Chapter 7

Conclusion:
This research aims to investigate visitors experience and expectation the destination of
Bangladesh National Museum. More specifically, this study also investigates the significant
moderating role of visiting frequency on the relationship between visitors and Bangladesh
National Museum. Museums offer unique collections for tourists’ education and recreation while
providing a better understanding of the cross-cultural diversity of societies. The research was
conducted with 100 or more tourists visiting the National Museum in Bangladesh, with questions
relating to experience, satisfaction, loyalty and willingness to pay more.Museum experiences that
are considered as tourist experiences are a transition or exchange between the museum and its
visitors discussed the experience expectations of museum visitors in their study. The purpose of
the paper is to find out what is it that tourists want from Bangladesh National Museum and art
galleries experience. For the purpose of this paper we have carried out primary research in
November, December and January in 2022, in the area of Bangladesh National Museum
including the sample of 100 more tourists. The aim of the research was to examine visitors
experience and expectation towards museum and art galleries.
