Cylindrical Fuse Disconnectors (Wohner)

Application:
Branch circuit protection for electrical distribution systems. The fuse holders are excellent for small motor loads and group protection
of small motors. The entire line is IEC approved and carries the CE Mark for use in European markets.

Enclosed design safety

The enclosed design offers many advantages unlike “open” fuse blocks that can be dangerous if left exposed. The enclosed design
of the AMBUS series features IP2 dead-front construction under IEC and DIN standards. In operation, there is no access to live
fuses or fuse clips. With the flip of a finger, fuse access is gained via a levered compartment on the front of the holder that isolates
the fuse from the line power. This makes fuse change-out quick, easy, convenient... and safe.

AMBUS ® EasySwitch – general purpose type, general features

 3 holder sizes: 32A, 50A and 100A.
 The AMBUS line is compact, saving up to 15% in panel space over conventional fuse blocks.
 The entire line is also DIN-rail mountable, resulting in extra savings in panel building time.
 The bodies are made up of tough and durable polyamide, known for its exceptional insulating properties.
 Wire terminals accept multiple conductors.
 Compact version for 10 x 38 fuses, great for switchboard, MCC and panel board applications.
 Short-circuit withstand capacity ranging 80kA to 120kA depending on the fuse selected.
 The 32A AMBUS ® EasySwitch is easy to install in series, with an installed width of only 18mm.
 Larger sizes for 14 x 51mm (to 50A) and 22 x 58mm (to 100A) cylindrical fuses
 690V circuits can be fused at ratings up to 80A
 Convenient connection features and clip-on fitting on mounting rails.
 Fuses are installed or replaced conveniently and safely using the swiveling handle.
 The holder is designed so as to offer comprehensive shock protection.
 A model with LED indicates a blown fuse.
 Can be used with semiconductor fuses

Fuse technical data – utilisation classes of fuses

Classes of Fuses / Fuse class

International Standards have developed basic physical specifications and electrical performance requirements for fuses with voltage
ratings. The fuse class refers to the designed breaking characteristic of the fuse.

IEC Fuse Utilisation categories

Fuse Type Fuse applications Fuse operating range
aM Motor circuit protection against short circuits only. Partial range. DIN-NH fuses. Partial Range

aR Semi-conductor protection. IEC 60269-4. Partial range. (Short circuit protection only)
General purpose fuse. Mainly for conductor protection. Can be used for motor
gG
starting. Full range. DIN-NH or BS fuse links.
Motor circuit protection – full range fuse with two rated currents. Mostly used in
gM
British Commonwealth countries. BS / IEC 60269. Full range

Semiconductor protection and conductor protection, faster acting than gS types. (Overload and short circuit
gR protection)
IEC 60 269-4, VDE. Full range.
gS Semiconductor protection, for increased line capacity. IEC 60 269-4. Full range.

gPV Photovoltaic (Solar energy) applications IEC/EN 60 269-6. Full range.

gB Full range, for mining industry equipment .VDE. Full range.

gL, gF, gI Obsolete fuse category for conductor protection, replaced by “gG” fuse category

Fast and slow acting fuses

If you've ever had to replace a fuse, you may have realised that there's a few different fuse speeds. In simple terms, 'fuse speed'
tends to refer to the time between the moment that an overcurrent begins and the moment the fuse arcs and opens a circuit.

Most fuses can be considered to be fast acting, however there are also slow acting varieties, also known as 'motor fuses', 'time
delay', 'slow blow', 'delayed action', etc and semiconductor protection versions, also known as 'ultra-rapid', 'solid state', 'rectifier', etc.

When it comes to official classifications though, fuses are not classified in terms of 'speed' but more in terms of 'range' and
'application'. All fuses that are covered by the IEC standard have an utilisation category, and when selecting fuses, it's very important
to get this right.
Fuses are marked with symbols denoting their particular application or characteristic. Refer above fuse utilisation categories table.

Fuse technical data – motor starting using Fuses

Motor starting using gG, aM, gM FUSE links at 400 / 415 VAC

Two types of Low Voltage cartridge fuse are common:

 gG: For domestic and similar installations

 gG, aM and gM: For industrial installations

Fuse operating ranges:

The first letter indicates the breaking range:

 “g” fuse-links (full-range breaking-capacity fuse-link)
 “a” fuse-links (partial-range breaking-capacity fuse-link)

The second letter indicates the utilisation category, which also defines the type of time-current characteristic.

For example
 “gG” applies to fuse-links with a full-range breaking capacity for general application
 “gM” applies to fuse-links with a full-range breaking capacity for the protection of motor circuits
 “aM” applies to fuse-links with a partial range breaking capacity for the protection of motor circuits

“gG” fuses gG fuse characteristics apply to either DIN or BS standard fuses.

gG type fuses: are designed to interrupt overloads and short circuits. gG fuses have a full operating range.
gG fuses while physically larger, provide “full range protection”, where the fuse reacts to both mild overloads and short circuit
currents. Most motor start tables and Type 2 motor starting coordination tables tend to use general purpose gG fuses as
opposed to aM fuses which always require external lower level current overload protection.

“aM” fuses aM fuse characteristics apply to DIN standard fuses.

aM type fuses: An advantage of aM fuses is that they are physically smaller than gG fuses. aM fuses are designed for short
circuits only, and are not designed to interrupt lower lever current overloads, which are typically up to around 6 - 8 x motor full
load current. aM fuses are known as “partial” operating range fuses. Low level over current protection must be provided by an
external device. Additionally, since aM fuses are not intended to protect against low values of overload current, there are no
levels of fixed conventional non-fusing and fusing currents.

Note: aM fuses only protect against short-circuit currents, and therefore must be used along with another external device to
protect against low level overloads. This can be a gG fuse, circuit breaker, or motor overload relay.

“gM” fuses gM fuse characteristics mainly apply (but not exclusively) to BS standard fuses.

A general purpose power distribution gG fuse-link is defined by its rated current In (e.g. fuse-link gG 63 A)
A BS type gM fuse-link, is characterised by two current values separated by an "M".

 The first numerical value In indicates the maximum continuous motor current.
 The second numerical value Ich indicates the standard fuse "G" time current rating & characteristic.

For example, a fuse-link rated 32M63 is intended to protect motors with a maximum continuous current less than 32 A and
also has the same time-current characteristic of a standard 63 A general application "G" fuse-link.

In short, the 1st amp rating is the motor full load amps. The 2nd amp rating is a general purpose power distribution rating (gG).

Fuse technical data – fuses for DC currents

Use of AC fuses for DC applications.

Voltage derating
 DC Pre-acing time is identical to AC pre-arcing time. The time/current characteristics and cut-off current remain valid for the use of fuses
for AC currents. However, the arcing time is much higher when used with DC currents, because there is no return to “O” (zero level)
voltage.

 The heat energy to be absorbed will be much higher than in AC. To maintain the fuse's joule integral, its serviceable voltage needs to be
limited.

Increase physical fuse size for DC

The use of physically larger fuses than usual is recommended, though the rated current (A) of the larger fuse would remain the same as the smaller
AC fuse ampere rating.

Example: use a 16A, 10 x 38mm cylindrical fuse for AC, and a 16A, 14 x 51mm cylindrical fuse for DC.

The method of using AC fuses for DC applications is a “rule of thumb” method, more suited to lower ampere, general DC applications. For some
specialty applications, other approaches including using dedicated DC fuses are recommended.

Such as
 For highly inductive circuits, placing two fuses in series on the + pole is recommended.
 It is not possible to use class aM fuses for DC applications.
 For photovoltaic applications, specific PV fuses with the correct time/breaking capacity characteristics must be used. These fuses are
marked with the gPV symbol and must comply with standard IEC 60269-6.
 The use of high speed fuses is possible for voltages between 450 and 800 VDC. Refer NHP for specific applications.
 For large current and DC drives application it is recommended to use dedicated DC fuses.

Fuse technical data – fuse let through charts

How to use Current-Limiting Fuse Let-Through Charts

The degree of current-limitation of a given size and type of fuse depends on the available short-circuit current that can be delivered by the electrical
system. Current-limitation of fuses is best described in the form of a let-through chart, that when applied from a practical point of view, is useful to
determine the let-through currents when a fuse opens. The line A-B corresponds to a short circuit power factor of 15% that is associated with an
X/R ratio of 6.6. The fuse curves represent the cutoff value of the prospective available short-circuit current under the given circuit conditions. Each
type or class of fuse has its own family of let-through curves.

Typically, there are three circuit parameters that can affect fuse let-through performance for a given available short-circuit current, and these
are:
 Short-circuit power factor
 Short-circuit closing angle
 Applied voltage

Current-limiting fuse let-through curves are generated under worst case conditions, based on these three variable parameters. Under actual field
conditions, changing any one or a combination of these will result in lower let-through currents. This provides for an additional degree of reliability
when applying fuses for equipment protection. Prior to using the Fuse Let-Through Charts, it must be determined what withstand and let through
data is available for other upstream or downstream electrical switchgear. The data that can be obtained for fuse links is available from Fuse Let-
Through Charts. The resulting physical effects are the following:

A. Peak let-through current: mechanical forces

B. Apparent prospective RMS symmetrical let-through current: heating effect
C. Clearing time: less than 1 2 cycle when the fuse is in it’s current-limiting range (beyond where fuse curve intersects A-B line).

Below is a typical example showing the short-circuit current available to an 800A circuit, an 800A fuse, and the let-through data curve.

Fuse technical data – fuse let through charts

Using the example given on the previous page, one can determine the let-through data for an 800A amp fuse. The Let-Through Chart pertaining to
the 800A fuse is illustrated.

A. Determine the PEAK let-through CURRENT.

Step 1. Enter the chart on the Prospective Short-Circuit current scale at 86,000 A and proceed vertically until the 800A fuse curve is intersected.
Step 2. Follow horizontally until the Instantaneous Peak Let-Through Current scale is intersected.
Step 3. Read the PEAK let-through CURRENT as 49,000A. (If a fuse had not been used, the peak current would have been 198,000A.)

B. Determine the APPARENT PROSPECTIVE RMS SYMMETRICAL let-through CURRENT.

Step 1. Enter the chart on the Prospective Short-Circuit current scale at 86,000A and proceed vertically until the 800A fuse curve is intersected.
Step 2. Follow horizontally until line A-B is intersected.
Step 3. Proceed vertically down to the Prospective Short-Circuit Current.
Step 4. Read the APPARENT PROSPECTIVE RMS SYMMETRICAL let-through CURRENT as 21,000A. (The RMS SYMMETRICAL let-through
CURRENT would be 86,000A if there were no fuse in the circuit.)

Current limitation curves – low peak time delay fuse

Instantaneous
Peak Let-Through
Current in Amps

Prospective Short Circuit Current – symmetrical RMS amps

From the chart above:

A: IRMS Available = 86,000 A
B: IRMS Let-Through = 21,000 A
C: IP Available = 198,000 A
D: IP Let-Through = 49,000 A

Most electrical equipment has a withstand rating that is defined in terms of an RMS symmetrical-short-circuit current, and in some cases, peak let-
through current. These values have been established through short circuit testing of that equipment according to an accepted industry standard. Or,
as is the case with conductors, the withstand rating is based on a mathematical calculation and is also expressed in an RMS short-circuit current.
If both the let-through currents (IRMS and Ip) of the current-limiting fuse and the time it takes to clear the fault are less than the withstand
rating of the electrical component, then that component will be protected from short circuit damage.

C. Clearing time If the RMS Symmetrical available is greater than the point where the fuse characteristic curve intersects with the diagonal A-B
line, then the fuse clearing time is 1 2 cycle or less. In this example, the intersection is approximately 9500A; so for short-circuit currents above
approximately 9500A, so therefore this 800A fuse is current-limiting.

Fuse technical data - selectivity

Selectivity with fuses (other terms with the same meaning: Discrimination, Coordination)

The coordination of overload & short circuit protective devices prevents system power outages or blackouts caused by overcurrent conditions.
When only the protective device nearest a faulted circuit opens and larger upstream fuses remain closed, the protective devices are said to be
“coordinated”, and they have Selectivity. Unlike electromechanical devices such as circuit breakers, with fuses, it is an easier matter of selecting the
fuses to coordinate by maintaining a minimum ratio of fuse-amp ratings between an upstream and downstream fuse. Selective coordination is then
assured.

Step 1. Ensure that time current characteristics do not overlap at any point. See below.
Step 2. Ensure that the let through energy of the downstream fuse is lower than the upstream fuse. Refer next page for details.
Result: Coordination Selectivity is then ensured.

Fuse technical data - selectivity

Selectivity with fuses (other terms with the same meaning: Discrimination, Coordination)

Total Selectivity is achieved when the total let through energy of the smaller downstream fuse link, is less than the pre-arcing energy of the larger

1:1.6 or 2:1.

Fuse technical data – fusing and non-fusing currents

Fusing and Non-Fusing Currents

The conditions defining the process of when a fuse blows (“fusing” or “melting”) are defined in AS/NZS 60269-1 and IEC 60269-1.

Class gG fuses (BS or DIN fuses)

Type gG fuses provide protection against low level overloads and unlimited current short-circuits. Conventional non-fusing and fusing currents are
applicable to gG fuse types, as shown in graph 1 and table 1 below.

 Conventional non-fusing current

Inf is the value of current that the fusible element can carry for a specified time without melting. Example: A 40 A fuse carrying a current
of 50A (1.25 In x 40 A) must not melt in less than one hour (table 1)

 Conventional fusing current

Ir in graph 1 is the value of current that will cause melting of the fusible element before the end of the specified time. Example: A 40 A
fuse carrying a current of 64A (1.6 In x 40 A) must melt in one hour or less.
It is a fact that two fuses which satisfy the test can have significantly different operating times at low levels of overloading.
 Because of this inconsistency in fusing currents & times, it is good practice to install larger ampere cable than what would normally be
required, in order to avoid the possibility cable running excessively hot.

aM type fuses (DIN fuses only) and circuit breaker trip times:
 aM fuses do not protect against low values of overload current. Therefore, non-fusing and fusing currents do not apply.
 Circuit-breaker tripping times compared to fuses at low amperes: When the current passes 1.05 x In, the C/B must not trip in less than
one hour; and when the current passes 1.25 x In the C/B must trip in one hour, or less. Circuit breakers in general have a greater
performance consistency with regard to tripping and this can therefore be a consideration when sizing cable. To break this down even
more, electronic circuit breakers have a greater accuracy than thermal magnetic.

Fuse technical data – temperature ratings

The following applies to NH-DIN and BS fuse links

For a fuse to remain operating satisfactorily according to AS/NZS 60269.3.1, the Ambient Temperature (Ta) of a fuse is not to exceed 40⁰C, and its
mean value measured over a period of 24 hours is not to exceed 35⁰C, and its mean value measured over 1 year is lower. The minimum value of
Ta is -5⁰C. In cases where these values are exceeded a current re-rating will apply. When a fuse is in an enclosure, it is the temperature inside the
enclosure (Te) that will determine any derating. On the following page a calculation method of an ampere rating of an open or enclosed fuse, taking
ambient temperature into account is shown.

Ambient Temperature & fuse lifetime

AS/NZS and IEC current carrying tests for fuses are performed at approximately 20°C, and will be affected by changes in ambient temperature. In
general, a fuse link is expected to retain its approximate standard current rating within ambient conditions of 17⁰C to 30⁰C (AS/NZS 60269 3.1).
The higher the ambient temperature, the hotter the fuse will operate, and the shorter its life will be, while use at a lower temperature will extend fuse
life. A fuse will run hotter as the normal operating current approaches or exceeds the rating of the selected fuse. A fuse being operated within the
range of 15⁰C – 25⁰C can last indefinitely.

Obtaining current ratings for different temperatures

 A rule of thumb is to derate the fuse by 0.5 % for every degree over 38⁰C.
 The table below can be used for operating temperatures above and below 20⁰C.
 A calculation method for ampere rating an open or enclosed fuse, taking ambient temperature into account – next page.

Fuse technical data – glossary of terms: A to F

Arcing I2t
Value of the I2t during the arcing time under specified conditions.

Ambient Temperature
The current carrying capacity tests of fuses are usually performed at 25oC and will be affected by changes in ambient temperature. The higher the
ambient temperature, the hotter the fuse will operate, and the shorter its life. Conversely, operating at a lower temperature will prolong fuse life. A
fuse also runs hotter as the normal operating current approaches or exceeds the rating of the selected fuse. Practical experience indicates fuses at
room temperature should last indefinitely, if operated at no more than 75% of catalog fuse rating.

Ampere Rating
The current-carrying capacity of a fuse. It is given in amps RMS (root mean square, also called the effective value).

I2t , Ampere Squared Seconds

The measure of heat energy developed within a circuit during the fuse operation. “I” stands for effective let through current (RMS), which is
squared, and “t” stands for time of opening, in seconds. It can be expressed as Melting “I2t”, “Arcing I2t” or the sum of them as “Clearing I2t”.

Arcing Time
The amount of time from the instant the fuse link has melted until the over current is safely interrupted (cleared).

Arc Voltage
This is the voltage, which occurs between the terminals of a fuse during operation. The size of the arc voltage for a given fuse is supply voltage
dependent.

Breaking capacity / Interrupting rating / Interrupting capacity

This is the maximum value of prospective current, RMS symmetrical, which a fuse is capable of breaking at stated conditions.

Clearing (Total operating) Time

The total time between the beginning of the over current and the final opening of the circuit at system voltage. Clearing time is the total of the
melting time and the arcing time.

Conventional Time
A nominated time in which the fuse-link must operate (Fusing Current) respectively not operate (Non fusing Current) under defined conditions. The
Conventional Time depends on a given Rated Current range. The time varies between 1 and 4 hours.

Current-Limitation
A fuse operation relating to short-circuits only. When a fuse operates in its current-limiting range, it will clear a short circuit before the first peak of
the current. Also, it will limit the instantaneous peak let-through current to a value substantially less than that obtainable in the same circuit if that
fuse were replaced with a solid conductor of equal impedance.

Cut-off current / Peak-let-through current

The maximum value reached by the fault current during the breaking operation of a fuse. In many cases the fuse will be current limiting.

Discrimination (or called Selectivity or Coordination)

Classification of relevant parameters (Time/Current-Characteristic; Integrals; Operating Times etc.) of two or more overload protection devices
compared to each other. In the case of overloads only the protection device should react. Fuses with the same characteristic are mostly selective to
each other, if they are selected in the current ratios of 1:1.6 or 2:1. That means, that a fuse with a rated current of 100 A should be downstream of a
fuse rated 160 A etc. For the short-circuit fuse range (aM fuses) a comparison of the melting time versus the operating time of the downstream fuse
is important.

Fast Acting Fuse

A fuse which opens on overload and short circuits very quickly. This type of fuse is not designed to withstand temporary overload currents
associated with some electrical loads, when sized near the full load current of the circuit.

Fuse
An over current protective device with a fusible link that operates and opens the circuit on an over current condition.

Fuse technical data – glossary of terms: F to T

Fusing Current
The current at which the fuse melts and opens the circuit in a time nominated by the standards. "fusing current" should not be confused with "rated
current" which is the current that the fuse can carry indefinitely. The ratio between the two is sometimes called the "fusing factor". Fusing current
usually applies to gG general purpose fuses.

High Speed Fuses

Fuses with no intentional time-delay in the overload range and designed to open as quickly as possible in the short circuit
range. These fuses are often used to protect solid state devices.

Inductive Load
A load which has inductive properties. Common forms are motors, transformers, wound control gear. This type of load pulls a large amount of
current when first energised.

Interrupting Capacity & Interrupting Rating - refer to Breaking Capacity

Non-fusing Current
A defined value of current, at which (under certain circumstances) a fuse- link must not operate within a given time (Conventional Time). For
General Purpose, e.g. gG Fuse. This value is normally 1.25 times the Rated Current.

Melting (Pre-arcing) Time

The amount of time required to melt the fuse element during a specified over current. (See Arcing Time and Clearing Time.)

Overcurrent
A condition which exists on an electrical circuit when the normal load current is exceeded. Over currents take on two separate characteristics -
overloads and short-circuits.

Overload
This is a condition in which an over current exceeds the normal full load current of a circuit that is in an otherwise healthy condition.

Peak Let-Through Current

The instantaneous value of peak current let-through by a current-limiting fuse, when it operates in its current-limiting range.

Power Losses / Watts losses

The power released in a fuse when loaded according to stated conditions.

Prospective short-circuit current

This is the current that would flow in the fault circuit if the fuse was replaced by a link with an infinitely small impedance. Normally it is given as
symmetrical RMS value, also called IP.

Recovery voltage
This is the voltage which can be measured across the fuse connections after operation.

RMS Current
Also known as the effective value, it corresponds to the peak instantaneous value of a sinusoidal waveform divided by the square root of two. The
RMS value of an alternating current is equivalent to the value of direct current which would produce the same amount of heat or power.

Semiconductor Fuses
Fuses used to protect solid-state devices. Refer “High Speed Fuses”.

Short-Circuit Current
Can be classified as an over current which exceeds the normal full load current of a circuit by a factor many times.

Short-Circuit Current Rating

The maximum short-circuit current an electrical component can sustain without the occurrence of excessive damage when protected with an over
current protective device.

Threshold Current
The symmetrical RMS available current at the threshold of the current limiting range, where the fuse becomes current limiting
when tested to the industry standard. This value can be read off of a peak let-through chart where the fuse curve intersects the A-B line. A
threshold ratio is the relationship of the threshold current to the fuse’s continuous current rating.

Fuse technical data – glossary of terms: T to Z

Time-Delay Fuse
A fuse with a built-in delay that allows temporary and harmless inrush currents to pass without opening, but is so designed to open on sustained
overloads and short-circuits.

Virtual Melting Time

Is a method of presenting melting times in a manner independent of the current waveform. It is the time that it would take a DC -current equal to IP
to generate the Melting l2t. The definition is:

Total operating (Clearing) I2t

The total operating I2t value is the total of the pre-arcing and the arcing I2t values under specified conditions.

UL
A standard covering all products sold in the USA. UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inc., an independent, non-profit, and non-governmental
organization focusing on product safety. UL issues standards and provides third party testing.

Voltage Rating
The maximum open circuit RMS voltage in which a fuse can be used, yet safely interrupt an over current. Exceeding the voltage rating of a fuse
impairs its ability to clear an overload or short-circuit safely.

Withstand Rating
The maximum current that an unprotected electrical component can sustain for a specified period of time without the occurrence of extensive
damage.

SSF Standard Switch Fuse - Accesssories

Electronic blown fuse indication (FMD: Fuse Monitoring Device)

Applications: For DIN, BS88, UL fuse cartridges without the need for special “striker” fuse types

How it works:
 An FMD 10 detects fuse status & provides a signal via a relay & 1 LED
 An FMD 30 detects fuse status & provides a signal via a bi-stable relay and 3 LEDs
 An FMD 30 will indicate if fuses have blown on 1 or 3 phases via LEDs on the unit (FMD 10 has 1 LED)
 The FMD can be mounted on DIN rail, a mounting plate, the side of an SSF switch fuse, or door mounted
 “Test” function to check for correct operation of the device
 FMD relay power consumption is 3 VA for FMD10 and 15 VA for FMD 30.
 The FMD is direct connected to the fuse tag mounting connections – see diagram at right
 Universal wire lead kits listed below are suitable for connection of DIN or BS fuses to the FMD.

Ordering: For each FMD, 1 x Universal wiring kit is to be ordered from the accessories listing below.
