Describes well-defined sets, subsets,

universal sets, and the null set and
cardinality of sets.

Identify the ways on how to write

the elements of a set.
Use Venn diagram to represent
sets and operations of sets

guide Card

This material was designed especially to help you

develop your skill in DESCRIBING WELL-DEFINED SETS,
SUBSETS, UNIVERSAL SETS, AND THE NULL SET AND
CARDINALITY OF SETS. .
As you work on the exercises, you will be able to
learn how to describe and identify the elements of a set,
thereby improving your skill using different techniques in
dealing with this topic.
Ms. Noemi, your MATH TOUR GUIDE is here to help

Hi! I’m Ms. Noemi, I am very excited to be with you

in this journey for you to learn in such an easy and
very fun way. I will guide you on this journey.
Every time you see me, I have information to tell
you which may help you learn from this learning
material. All you need to do is relax, take a pen
and enjoy learning. Good luck!

HAPPY LEARNING!
TEACH YOURSELF

Just like what the saying goes …….. “AN APPLE A DAY,
KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY.” Making notes and information
about the lesson will help you understand better the
lesson.
A set is a well- defined group of objects, called
elements that share a common characteristic.
Other important terms you should remember
for this topic are:

1. SUBSET
The set B is a subset of set A if all elements of B are also elements

elements in set B or A ⊇ B. If B is a proper subset of A we write it

of A. In symbol, B ⊆ A. We can also say that set A contains the

as B  A All the elements in set B are

For example: A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8} also in the elements of set
A. Therefore set B is a
B = {2, 4, 6, 8}
subset of set A
To identify the subsets of set B, we write B= { {2}, {4}, {6},
{8}, {2,4}, {2,6}, {2,8}, {4, 6}, {4,8}, {6,8}, {2,4,6},
{2,4,8}, {4,6,8}, {2,4,6,8}, ∅ }
2. UNIVERSAL SET
The universal set U is the set that contains all objects under
consideration.
3. NULL SET
The null set (∅ ) is an empty set, it is indicated by a symbol ∅ or
{ }. The null set is a subset of any set.
4. CARDINALITY OF A SET
The cardinality of a set A is the number of elements contained in A.
Example: A= {white, red, yellow, blue}
The cardinality of set A is 4

Ways of writing the elements of a

set

Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and lowercase

letters will be used to refer to any element of a set.
Example: G= { m,a,t,h }

1. Listing or Roster Method

It is the method of naming the elements of a set. We use curly
brackets { } or braces to notate elements.
For example, let C be the set of primary colors or C= {x|x primary
colors} we write,
C = {red, blue, yellow}
A Venn diagram is an illustration that uses circles to show the
relationships among things or finite groups of things. Circles
that overlap have a commonality while circles that do not
overlap do not share those traits. Venn diagrams help to
visually represent the similarities and differences between two
concepts.

Do you want to have a game? This game is

called the treasure hunt. Every challenge that you will
accomplish, you will get a key that will open each of
the treasure chests to unveil the hidden message.
Below is a treasure map that will help you find the
challenges and get the keys. Good luck and Have fun!
Let’s go to your first challenge.
ACTIVITY CARD 1

Fill in the blanks. Choose the correct

answer from Box B

1. The symbol for universal set is

2. A is a well- defined group
of objects, called elements that
share a common characteristic.
