A. What is Linear Programming?

Linear programming (LP) is a mathematical method used to find the optimal

solution (maximum or minimum value) in a situation represented by linear
relationships. It involves maximizing or minimizing a linear objective function,
subject to constraints also expressed in linear equations or inequalities

B. Provide at least 3 sample problems about linear programming and their

solutions.

1. Diet Problem: A dietician wants to create a meal plan that meets the
daily nutritional requirements for vitamins A and C at the minimum cost.
Different foods provide varying amounts of vitamins, and each food has a
cost. Linear programming can be used to determine the combination of
foods that minimizes the total cost while meeting the daily vitamin
needs.

Solution: Define variables for the amount of each food to be included in the diet.
Set up linear equations to represent the minimum vitamin requirements and the
total cost. Use linear programming techniques like the simplex method to find
the most economical combination of foods that fulfills the vitamin requirements.

2. Production Planning: A company wants to maximize its profit by

producing different products with limited resources like machine hours
and materials. Each product has a profit margin and requires specific
amounts of resources. Linear programming can help determine the
optimal production quantities for each product to maximize overall profit
while staying within resource constraints.

Solution: Define variables for the production quantity of each product. Set up
linear equations to represent the profit for each product, the total resource
consumption, and the resource limitations. Use linear programming to find the
production plan that maximizes profit without exceeding resource capacity.

3. Transportation Problem: A company has warehouses in different

locations and needs to deliver goods to stores. Each warehouse has a
certain amount of stock, and each store requires a specific quantity.
Transportation costs vary depending on the route. Linear programming
can help determine the most cost-effective way to ship goods from
warehouses to stores, considering transportation costs and stock
availability.

Solution: Define variables for the amount of goods shipped from each
warehouse to each store. Set up linear equations to represent the supply from
each warehouse, the demand of each store, and the total transportation cost.
Use linear programming to find the shipping plan that minimizes total
transportation costs while fulfilling store demands and not exceeding warehouse
stock.
C. Discuss the importance of linear programming to you as an IT student.

 Algorithmic Thinking: Linear programming exposes you to the concept of

optimization algorithms, a fundamental concept in computer science. It
helps you develop problem-solving skills by breaking down complex
scenarios into mathematical models and finding optimal solutions.
 Data Analysis Applications: Linear programming plays a role in various data
analysis applications. You might encounter problems in data management or
machine learning that can be formulated and solved using linear
programming techniques.
 Software Development: Linear programming is used in developing logistics
and supply chain management software, resource allocation tools, and other
applications that involve optimization. Understanding linear programming
principles can be beneficial if you pursue a career in these areas.

Overall, linear programming equips IT students with valuable problem-solving

skills, optimization techniques, and a foundational understanding applicable to
various IT fields. By understanding linear programming, IT students develop a
strong foundation for tackling real-world problems.
