Strengths/Next Steps for Improvement
It has been a pleasure teaching Henok this year. He participates enthusiastically in group lessons and enjoys demonstrating what he knows.
He makes an effort to complete all of his work accurately and gets along well with others in the class. Henok is able to come to solutions with
peers after disagreements and employs strategies to calm down when frustrated or needing space.
Henok often interrupts during class and finds it challenging to refocus if he is in a silly mood. He sometimes needs multiple reminders in order
to settle. He is encouraged to think before shouting out, or raise his hand if his idea is relevant to the whole class. When asked to stop a
disruptive behaviour, he should practise stopping after the first request or asking for a break so that he can reset.
Henok brings a positive energy to our class. He is kind and usually considerate of others. He is enthusiastic and is resilient when facing
challenges. Have a great summer, Henok, and best of luck in grade two! (LDH)

French NA Henok understands French conversations, instructions, and questions. He is engaged when listening
and uses contextual cues and gestures to add to his understanding. Henok participates in short
Listening conversations, and should continue to engage in discussion in order to support his speaking and

listening skills. Henok uses familiar sentence structures and words in class. Henok is encouraged to
continue to engage in speaking activities to build his confidence and begin speaking spontaneously.
Speaking Henok understands simple texts and can sound out words, including those with complex sounds. He is
still working on reading longer words and texts fluently. To increase his fluency, Henok should practise
ESL/ELD IEP C+ B- reading aloud. Henok writes short sentences based on a model. He prints neatly and accurately. Henok
can encode words that he hears, including those with complex sounds. As a next step, Henok should
Reading add complexity to his writing by adding more detail or using conjunctions. (LDH)

Math: Henok continues to explore connections between math and everyday contexts to help him make
informed judgements and decisions. Henok frequently represents and solves equal-group problems
B- B+ through a variety of drawings, sharing games, and crafts. In Data, Henok uses mathematical language
(e.g., impossible, possible, certain) to describe the probability that an event will occur. In Spatial Sense,
ESL/ELD Henok routinely uses positional language to describe the relative locations of objects or people. Henok
often gives and follows accurate directions for moving from one location to another on a simple grid
IEP map. Henok sorts 3-D objects and 2-D shapes according to one attribute (e.g., vertices, side length) at
a time and can usually identify the sorting rule being used. In Financial Literacy, Henok has a firm
understanding of the various Canadian coins up to 50¢ and bills up to $50 and frequently compares
French their values. Henok is encouraged to continue to explore creative problem solving solutions that allow
him to make connections between different areas of math. It has been a pleasure to teach Henok. Good
luck in Grade 2! (GM)
Science and Technology STEM Skills and Connections, Life Systems, Matter and Energy, Structures and Mechanisms, Earth and Space Systems
Henok demonstrates some understanding of the basic needs of different living things and how they
B B
meet those needs. He is able to represent some of the connections between living things. Henok
identifies the importance of a healthy environment and the negative outcomes when the environment is
not cared for. He effectively brainstorms ways that humans can reduce their impact, such as using
electronics less. Henok identifies parts of the human body accurately, including sensory organs. He
ESL/ELD demonstrates an understanding of how raw materials are turned into everyday materials and how they
are disposed at the end of their life. Henok can identify the purpose of different structures and fasteners
and can compare materials used in various structures. Henok is encouraged to contribute his voice and
IEP suggestions more often to science discussions and activities. (LDH)

in his community and how he interacts with local services. Henok compares some of the ways he and
others interact with our natural and built environment. On our forest walks, Henok is able to compare
ESL/ELD the opportunities provided by the natural space with opportunities provided by developed areas and the
value of each. Henok identifies changes in our community, such as new stores and developments. He
IEP communicates their impact on his daily life. Henok communicates his own personal community
interactions through drawing, mapping, and writing a story of his ideal Saturday. Henok is encouraged
to continue to explore his local community and consider his own role. (LDH)
