UNIT 5 INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

Skin
Essential Question: I can ask questions and/or make
predictions based on observations and evidence to
demonstrate how cellular organization, structure, and
function allow organisms to maintain homeostasis.

Standard Learning Objective:

● I can compare and contrast the different body membranes.
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

◼ Functions of body membranes

◼ Cover body surfaces
◼ Line body cavities
◼ Form protective sheets around organs
◼ Classified according to tissue types

5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Epithelial membranes
◼ Are simple organs
◼ Also called covering and lining
membranes
◼ These membranes contain:
◼ Epithelial tissue layer
◼ Connective tissue layer
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Cutaneous membrane = skin

◼ Dry membrane Cutaneous
membrane
◼ Outermost protective boundary (skin)
◼ Construction
◼ Epidermis is composed of keratinized
stratified squamous epithelium
◼ Dermis is mostly dense (fibrous)
connective tissue
Cutaneous membrane (the skin)
covers the body surface.
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Mucous membranes (mucosae)

◼ Moist membranes
◼ Line all body cavities that open to the
exterior body surface
◼ Adapted for absorption or secretion
◼ Construction Mucosa
◼ Epithelium type depends on site
◼ Loose connective tissue (lamina propria)
Mucous membranes line body
cavities open to the exterior.
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Serous membranes (serosae)

◼ Line open body cavities that are
closed to the exterior of the body
◼ Occur in pairs, separated by serous
fluid, with a visceral and parietal layer
◼ Construction
◼ Simple squamous epithelium
◼ Areolar connective tissue
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

■ Serous fluid – clear fluid

between the parietal and
visceral membranes; allows
membranes to move without
friction
5.1 Skin and Body Membranes
Specific serous membranes

Peritoneum Pleura Pericardium

- Abdominal cavity - Around the lungs - Around the heart

Parietal layer
Serous fluid
Visceral layer

(c) Serous membranes line body cavities closed to exterior.

5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Connective tissue membranes

Ligament
Synovial membranes Joint cavity (contains
◼ Loose areolar connective tissue only (no synovial fluid)

epithelial tissue) Articular

(hyaline)
cartilage

5.1 Skin and Body Membranes

Synovial membranes
Ligament
◼ Line fibrous capsules surrounding joints
◼ Line bursae Joint cavity (contains
synovial fluid)
◼ Line tendon sheaths Articular

◼ Secrete a lubricating fluid to cushion (hyaline)

organs moving against each other during
muscle activity

5.1 Body Membranes Review

What is the function Give an example What is the tissue

for each membrane of a location in makeup of the
type? the body for each membrane types?
● cutaneous membrane type? ● cutaneous
● mucous ● cutaneous ● mucous
● serous ● mucous ● serous
● synovial ● serous ● synovial
● synovial
