Computer Engineering Network Management & Administration [19404]

Experiment No 3

Title : Installation and configuration of Windows server and client.

Course Outcome :
• Identify Need of Network Management and Administration.
• Explain Directory services and Remote Access
• Demonstrate networking protocols and services.
• Install and Configure Network Server Operating System
• Creating and Managing User Accounts.
• Troubleshooting Network.

Theory :
Windows Server is a server operating system developed by Microsoft, designed
to manage network resources, provide services, and support applications in
business environments. It serves as the backbone for various services like Active
Directory, DNS, and file storage, allowing organizations to centralize their
resources and streamline management. Windows Client, on the other hand, refers
to the operating systems designed for individual user machines, which can
connect to the Windows Server to access network services.
Key Components
1. Active Directory (AD): Manages users and resources within a network.
2. Domain Name System (DNS): Resolves domain names to IP addresses.
3. File Services: Manages file sharing and storage on the network.
4. Web Services (IIS): Hosts websites and web applications.
5. Remote Desktop Services (RDS): Allows remote access to applications and
desktops.
6. Virtualization (Hyper-V): Enables the creation and management of virtual
machines.
Features of Windows Server

1

Computer Engineering Network Management & Administration [19404]

• Scalability: Supports large-scale applications and services.

• Security: Provides advanced security features, including BitLocker and
Windows Defender.
• Management Tools: Includes Server Manager and PowerShell for efficient
management.
• High Availability: Features like Failover Clustering ensure service
continuity.
• Active Directory Integration: Centralizes user management and access
control.
Need for Windows Server
• Centralized Management: Simplifies the management of user accounts,
devices, and resources.
• Resource Sharing: Facilitates sharing of applications, files, and printers
across the network.
• Data Security: Protects sensitive data and resources through security policies
and access controls.
• Increased Collaboration: Enhances collaboration among users with shared
resources.
Installing and Configuring Windows Server: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Pre-Installation Requirements
• Hardware Requirements: Ensure the server meets the minimum hardware
requirements (CPU, RAM, disk space).
• Backup: Backup existing data if upgrading or installing on a server with data.
• Installation Media: Obtain Windows Server installation media (USB/DVD
or ISO).
Step 2: Boot from Installation Media
1. Insert the installation media and restart the server.
2. Press the appropriate key (usually F2, F10, DEL) to access BIOS/UEFI
settings.

2

3. Change the boot order to prioritize the installation media.

4. Save changes and exit.
Step 3: Start Installation
1. On the Windows Setup screen, select the language, time, and keyboard
preferences.
2. Click "Next" and then "Install now."
3. Enter the product key when prompted.
Step 4: Select Installation Type
• Upgrade: Choose this if upgrading from a previous version.
• Custom: Choose this for a clean installation.
Step 5: Partition the Disk
1. Select the disk where Windows Server will be installed.
2. If necessary, create new partitions (formatting might be required).
3. Select the partition and click "Next."
Step 6: Installation Process
• The installation will begin, and the server may reboot several times.
• Follow on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
Step 7: Initial Configuration
1. Set a password for the Administrator account.
2. Configure network settings (IP address, DNS).
3. Select whether to enable Windows Update.
Step 8: Server Configuration
1. Open Server Manager after the installation completes.
2. Configure roles and features as needed (e.g., Active Directory, DNS).
3. Follow the role-specific configuration wizards to complete the setup.
Step 9: Joining a Domain (if applicable)

3

1. In Server Manager, navigate to Local Server.

2. Click on Workgroup to change to Domain.
3. Enter the domain name and credentials of a domain administrator.
Step 10: Client Installation
1. Boot the client machine with Windows Client installation media.
2. Follow similar steps for language and installation type.
3. Set up the machine to join the domain (if applicable).
The installation and configuration of Windows Server and Client is a crucial
process in setting up a networked environment. By understanding the key
components, features, and following a systematic installation guide,
organizations can effectively leverage the capabilities of Windows Server to
manage their resources and enhance productivity.

Output :

Steps to install and configuration of windows 11:

1.Download the Windows 10/11 ISO from the Microsoft website or use the Media
Creation Tool.

2.Insert the installation DVD into the optical bay or the bootable USB disk into
your computer.

3.Press the F8 key multiple times while the computer starts to call the Boot menu.

4.Use the arrow keys to select the drive unit that contains the Windows 11
installer. Some drives may show up twice. If so I recommend you chose the
version that's named EFI or UEFI. This is the best way to install Windows 11
and it's a hassle to switch to UEFI after installing the OS in legacy BIOS mode.

5.Next, a message to Press any key to boot from the CD or DVD... appears.
Doing

so will start the actual Windows 11 installation process and the new Windows
11 flat

logo will show up.

6.First step is to choose to Install now. On this screen, you'll also see an option to
Repair your computer. You'll ignore it for this guide.

8.Now it's time to select the Windows edition you want to install. Your selection
must match the product key entered earlier or else Windows won't activate.

9.To proceed you next need to agree to the licensing terms (EULA).

10.

At this step you'll see all available disks detected in your computer. Let the
installer know the disk where Windows 11 files will be copied. You can choose
to
