Since the Holy Prophet (SAW)S lifetime hadith were committed to memories and written in pieces both.

It was due to the great emphasis the Prophet laid on the writing and circulation of Hadith. As a result of
this various collections were prepared in the 1st generation of Hadith and the subsequent generations.

Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) other than teaching the Hadith verbally and practically also dictated the
Hadith to his companions so they may write it down in order for its preservation. He appointed 34 of his
companions as scribes that wrote letters, treaties, responses to letters and official documents for the
Holy Prophet (SAW), some of these writings later formed Hadith collections. Among the treaties were
the treat of Hudaibiyyah, Charter of Madinah and among the letters are those he sent as invitations to
the ruler and emperors. An official document of the Holy Prophet’s speech to the Makkans was sent to
Abu Shah who belonged to Yemen. Instructions for governing were sent to the governer of Yemen Amr
bin hazm as an official guide. Prophet (SAW) also encouraged and permitted his companions for the
writing and preserving of Hadith. His permission to Abudllah bin Umar is evident to this. Once Abdullah
bin Umar asked “O prophet! I wish to narrate some your traditions so I intend to write them with my
hand along with my heart? The Holy Prophet (SAW) if it is my hadith have it written along with your
heart. His encouragement and permissions resulted in various hadith collections made by the
companions of the Holy Prophet (SAW). Few famous amongst these collections were, Saheefah e Sadiqa
by Abdullah bin Umar on permit, shaheefah ali and saheefah anas bin malik and shaeefah ali also the
book of jabir and saad. The succesors continued to collect the hadith, they were the students who
acquired knowledge of Islamic injunctions directly from the great companions of the Holy Prophet
(SAW). In this age the practice of writing became more common as it was the command of the caliph
Umar bin Abdul Aziz to focus more on writings to preserve the Hadith. It is said that the first compilation
after the command was of Iaam Zuhri others were Kitab ul Athar Musannaf of Imam Abdul Razzaq and
Musannaf of Imam Mohammad. Two famous books that are still used are______________-. WRITE
