Lesson Language

Practice
(1 minute)
Addition is putting objects together.
The symbol for addition is (+) and read as “plus".
One way to represent the sets of objects is to replace the word “and” by “+” and “is” by “=”, which is read as
“is equal to” or “equals”.
The equal sign (=) indicates the sum of the objects being combined. Thus, we have the addition sentence
6 + 2 = 8.
NOTES TO THE TEACHER: This part introduces the key terms to be used in the lesson or terms that are new in the lesson.

LESSON SCRIPT IN MATHEMATICS 1
To represent the given illustration, we will create an addition sentence. To create, replace the word “and” by “+”
and “is” by “=”, which is read as “is equal to” or “equals”.
From the example above, we have the addition sentence 5 + 5 = 10.
The numbers that are added are called addends.
The answer in addition is called sum or total.
NOTES TO THE TEACHER: This part introduces the key terms to be used in the lesson or terms that are new in the lesson.
During/Lesson Proper
Present a picture story.
One sunny day, James and his father went to the field to play. James was thrilled to see the birds
chirping and flapping their wings on a branch of a tree. He saw 6 yellow birds, while his father saw 6 more
birds on the other branch of the tree. How many birds did they see in all?
Questions:
1. How many birds did James see on the tree?
2. How many birds did James’ father see on the tree?
3. How many birds did they see in all
