MFSs to cashless society for financial inclusion in Bangladesh

“Banking is necessary, but banks are not.” -Bill Gates (1994)

Banking system is called the 'lifeblood' of economy whereas ‘MFSs/Mobile Banking’ has become the ‘lifeline’
of Banking System. Heart circulates the blood in every knock and corner of human body as like as MFSs i.e
Mobile Banking circulates money as well as banking services within the shortest possible time.

“Mobile Financial Services (MFS) is an approach to offering financial services that combines banking with mobile
wireless networks which enables users to execute banking transactions.”—Bangladesh Bank

Mobile banking is a Mobile Financial service (MFS) provided by a bank or other financial institution that allows
its customers to conduct financial transactions remotely using a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.

“We need banking but we don’t need banks anymore”. Bill Gates
Banking has become possible without bank by the grace of Mobile Banking. With the addition of fresh services,
the Mobile Financial Service (MFS) sector recognized as Mobile Banking has witnessed a major transformation
recently in the form of a 28% increase in transactions over a year, according to data from the Bangladesh Bank.
The monthly transactions through mobile financial services (MFS), such as bKash, Nagad and Rocket.
Mobile banking services in the country have undergone a radical change owing to the convenience of transferring
money from city to village areas and vice versa. As a result, the number of transactions is increasing with the
number of customers. In addition, people have become more comfortable with mobile banking than direct and
cash transactions.

 Limited Services, etc.
Challenges Associated with Mobile Banking:
Some of the challenges associated with mobile banking include (but are not limited to):
 Mobile Banking causes inconvenience for less tech-savvy account holders.
 Raises security concerns and online fraud, susceptible to hacking and other cyber security threats.
 It can be less secure than traditional banking, as mobile devices are often lost or stolen.
 It can be expensive, as customers may need to pay for data plans or other fees to use the service.
 Results in delays or losses in transactions due to mistakes.
 Gives rise to comprehension issues due to the complex app interface.
 Delays service requests in case of internet issues.
 It can be intrusive, as some banks may send customers marketing messages or other information that
they do not want to receive.
“Digital payment systems can do more for equality in poor countries than they can do anywhere else".
Bill Gates
The financial activities as well as the volume of economy of Bangladesh is expanding rapidly where mobile
banking is playing a great role because there is no tools without mobile banking which can ensure “Banking for
All” for a developing country like ours. The government as well as regulating authority should strictly regulate
the Mobile Financial service (MFS) sector to make it available for all people.
