Product description
Review
Martin Hammond's translation of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, like his Iliad and Odyssey, is the work of an unusually gifted translator, and one who understands the value added by careful attention to
supplementary material. He writes natural English, direct and often eloquent; the text is well supported by effective notes and a characteristically thorough and well-planned index; Diskin Clay supplies a
useful introduction. This is a fine volume -- Malcolm Heath ― Greece & Rome Journal

Marcus is well served by this new translation. Hammond has a pithy turn of phrase to match the emperor's own . . . His notes abound in helpful explanation and illuminating cross-reference. Diskin Clay
contributes a sparkling and sympathetic introduction. The combination of introduction, translation and notes is as good as they get -- John Taylor ― Journal of Classics Teaching

From the Back Cover

A series of spiritual exercises filled with wisdom, practical guidance, and profound understanding of human behavior, Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical
reflection ever written. Marcus's insights and advice--on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity and interacting with others--have made the "Meditations required reading for statesmen and
philosophers alike, while generations of ordinary readers have responded to the straightforward intimacy of his style.
In Gregory Hays's new translation--the first in a generation--Marcus's thoughts speak with a new immediacy: never before have they been so directly and powerfully presented.

Timeless Wisdom for Inner Reflection and Growth - A Must-Read!

"Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius is a literary masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on my perspective of
life, self-reflection, and personal growth. This collection of philosophical musings and insights is a treasure
trove of wisdom that transcends time and continues to resonate deeply with readers across generations.

Aurelius' introspective thoughts, written during his time as Roman Emperor, reveal a remarkable depth of
understanding about human nature and the challenges we face in our daily lives. His emphasis on the
impermanence of circumstances and the importance of focusing on our inner virtues serves as a guiding light
in navigating the complexities of existence.

One of the things that struck me the most was how relatable his observations remain today. Despite the
passage of centuries, the struggles of managing our emotions, seeking tranquility amidst chaos, and striving
for personal excellence are just as relevant now as they were in his era.

The structure of the book, divided into short passages or "meditations," allows for easy contemplation and
introspection.

Absolutely love this book and would definitely recommend to anyone who likes self improvement, motivation
or philosophical books. It is really interesting and inspiring. The only problem I have with the book is that there
were a few imperfections on the cover (which some people may not mind; however, I am very particular about
my books being in great condition). Would recommend to people who are not perfectionists and do not mind a
tiny but of lifting at the corners.

A modern, sane and sympathetic philosophy for life

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2010

There's an episode of Dad's Army where the English Captain Mainwaring turns out to be able to play the
bagpipes. He explains his skill by revealing that he spent his two-week honeymoon in Scotland, and that
there wasn't much else to do. Marcus Aurelius, who as Emperor of Rome was higher up the army ranks than
Mainwaring, probably felt the same way about northern Germany, where he spent his time trying to defeat the
barbarians. To pass the hours he scribbled down jottings and ideas about how to live a fulfilled life that
eventually became Meditations, one of the most wonderful personal philosophies ever written.

The thoughts and ideas here are connected by Aurelius' interest in the Stoic philosophy, but they are not a
narrative so the book can be opened at any page or read in any order as each paragraph is a single idea,
observation or point he wished to make. Aurelius comes across as an incredibly sane, warm, open and
tolerant individual and although he personally believes in a divine nature, an atheist can happily enjoy his
writing.

The Stoics were interested in logic, physics and ethics. These terms didn't hold their current meanings so

Timeless Wisdom for Cultivating Virtue and Resilience in an Uncertain World

Reviewed in Canada on 1 March 2024

"Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius is a profound and timeless work of philosophy that offers readers profound
insights into Stoic philosophy and practical guidance for living a virtuous life. Composed as a series of
personal reflections and meditations, this classic text provides a window into the mind of one of history's most
revered leaders and philosophers.

One of the most compelling aspects of "Meditations" is its intimate and introspective tone. Written by Marcus
Aurelius as a form of self-examination and moral reflection, the text offers readers a glimpse into the inner
thoughts and struggles of a Stoic philosopher-emperor. Through his meditations, Marcus Aurelius grapples
with timeless questions of ethics, mortality, and the nature of the universe, offering readers profound insights
into the human condition.

Central to Marcus Aurelius's philosophy is the idea of living in accordance with nature and embracing the
virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Throughout "Meditations," he emphasizes the
importance of self-discipline, resilience, and moral integrity in the face of life's challenges. His reflections on

Almost 2000 Years Old and Eerily Accurate to Todays World

Synopsis:
This is a book that everyone needs to read. This is the personal diary of the most important man in the
Roman empire at the time it was written. This is the equivalent of being able to read the personal diary of
todays world leaders, or top CEO's and understand their motivations and philosophies. This book does not
take long to read, and you can plow through it in about a week with roughly 30 minutes of reading each day.
Due to Marcus' philosophy, he does not use pretentious language, so the book is consumable by a wide
audience. Overall, this book is certainly worth the read and it will change how you look at the world, yourself
and your actions.

The Book:
Marcus was born in 121 AD and died in 180 AD, making his writings ~1,800 years old at the time of this
review. Mediate on that for a bit...you're reading the personal diary from a Roman emperor who died almost
2000 years ago. We are incredibly privileged to be able to read such a historical masterpiece. The
introduction from the translator is quite long, to the degree that I skipped it as he was consistently making
