I. GENERAL INFORMATION

c. PTS Mission : Provides quality and holistic Christian educational services at all
levels. Train men and women for the building up the church and
transformation of the society. Serve as a catalyst for the expansion of
God’s kingdom on earth.

II. COURSE IDENTIFICATION


a. Course Title : Teaching Social Studies in Elementary Grades Culture and
Geography.
b. Course Credit : 3 units
c. Pre- requisite : None
d. Course Description :
The course aims to equip the students in the BEED program a strong background in local
history and culture. This background serves as an avenue for further inquiry of the
available resources in the community for the localization and contextualization of
teaching of elementary subjects. Areas to be studied include natural heritage of the
locality, tangible and intangible culture that are of great significance to the socioeconomic
and political activities of the people in the place. In the end they are expected to come up
with the profiling of available cultural resources in the community.

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES


Course Intended Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course:
1. Evaluate the importance of social studies and its purpose in primary educational
environments.
2. Describe what powerful social studies looks like and identify important elements of
such instruction
3. Explain the role of inquiry, concepts, Big Ideas and Essential Questions in social
studies curriculum units.
4. Implement effective instructional strategies for teaching concepts, skills, and attitudes
in the elementary classroom.
5. Develop lessons, individualize materials, identify appropriate assessment strategies,
and plan unit of study using the formats provided.
6. Evaluate major resources for social studies education and describe trends in the field
relevant to teaching in our changing information age society.
7. Describe the importance of local history in teaching social studies
8. Create a profile of the different cultural resources in the local community.

VI. COURSE POLICIES


a. A student is only allowed a maximum of 3 absences. Students incurring 3 or more absences may
be dropped from the course.
b. Students are expected to come to class on time.
c. All requirements must be submitted on time. Students will be given at least one week after the
end of the semester to submit all written requirements.
d. Late submissions may be accepted but given a point deduction, or may not be given credit
depending on the lateness of the submission. In addition, late submissions after the set deadlines
will be given an “incomplete” grade to be removed or completed the following semester.
e. Students are expected to observe proper decorum during classes and are expected to perform
their tasks and submit their works with utmost consideration of academic honesty and integrity.
f. Serious cases of plagiarism may lead to a grade of FAILED and possible dismissal.
g. Comments/ Suggestions/ Recommendations by the professor/Instructor should be taken
positively as a learning experience to improve oral and written work.
h. All policies stated in the Student Handbook.
