DPP – 1: RAY OPTICS
1. An object is placed at (i) 10 cm, (ii) 5 cm in front of a concave mirror of radius of curvature 15
cm. Find the position, nature and magnification of the image in each case.
[30 cm, 3 and 15 cm, 3]
2. A small candle, 2.5 cm in size is placed at 27 cm in front of a concave mirror of radius of
curvature 36 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a screen be placed in order to obtain a
sharp image? Describe the nature and size of image. If candle is moved closer to the mirror, how
would the screen have to be moved? [54 cm]
3. A 4.5 cm needle is placed 12 cm away from a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm. Give the
location of the image and the magnification. Describe what happens as the needle is moved
farther from the mirror. [6.7 cm]
4. Use the mirror equation to deduce that
(i) An object placed between f and 2f of a concave mirror produces a real image beyond 2f.
(ii) A convex mirror always produces a virtual image independent of the location of the object.
(iii) The virtual image produced by a convex mirror is always diminished in size and is located
between the focus and the pole.
(iv) An object placed between the pole and focus of concave mirror produces a virtual and
enlarged image.
5. An object is kept in front of a concave mirror of focal length of 15 cm. The image formed is
three times the size of the object. Calculate the two possible distances of the object from the
mirror. [ 20 cm, 10 cm]
6. An object is placed in front of a concave mirror of focal length 20 cm. The image so formed is
real and 2 times the size of the object. Find the position of object placed and image so formed.
[30 cm, 60 cm]
7. (i) An object is placed at the centre of curvature of concave mirror, show by ray diagram the
mirror formula and magnification of the image.
(ii) Prove mirror formula by appropriate ray diagram with convex mirror.
(iii) Show that the image formed by plane mirror is at t he same distance as object placed in
front of plane mirror.
(v) Predict the nature of image and spherical mirror used in
(a) m = 3 (b) m = 0.2 (c) m = + 0.5 (d) m = + 5
[(a) Real, inverted, concave mirror, (b) Real, inverted, concave mirror;
(c) Virtual, erect, convex mirror; (d) Virtual, Erect, Concave mirror]
