Mother to Son HABITS I’m Glad to Be Me by Kenn Nesbitt

BY LANGSTON HUGHES
A habit is a sticky thing; I’m glad to be me. Yes, I’m glad to
Well, son, I’ll tell you: Much good or evil it can bring; be me.
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It binds a victim, holds him fast, And There’s nothing and no one that I’d
It’s had tacks in it, keeps him in a vise-like grasp. rather be.
And splinters, Bad habits grow with extra speed, I’m glad I’m the person who knows
And boards torn up, Much like a healthy, growing weed. what I know.
And places with no carpet on the floor— The roots grow deep, the stem grows stout; I’m glad I’ll go to all the places I’ll
Bare. How difficult to pull it out! go.
But all the time Good habits are a little slow; I’m glad that I have all the thoughts
I’se been a-climbin’ on, They need a lot of care to grow; that I have,
And reachin’ landin’s, If tended well, they grow more fair Than the foods that I eat and the drinks that
And turnin’ corners, any bloom a plant can bear. I drink.
And sometimes goin’ in the dark Good habits help us all through life; I’m glad that I have all the friends
Where there ain’t been no light. Bad habits bring us pain and strife; that I’ve met,
So boy, don’t you turn back. Our habits, whether right or wrong, the things that I’ve got and the things
Don’t you set down on the steps Each day will grow more firm and strong that I’ll get.
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard. I’m glad to be someone who sees
Don’t you fall now— what I see.
For I’se still goin’, honey, I’m glad to be me. Yes, I’m glad to
I’se still climbin’, be me.
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. And, one other thing that I’m glad
about too…
I think you’re great and I’m glad
you’re you.

The Teenage Years by Sarah Gray Courage The road to success
Courage is what makes us The road to success is not an easy one,
We learn from our mistakes, Courage is what divides us But it's a journey that's worth taking.
From the wrong turns we take, Courage is what drives us There will be obstacles along the way,
From the fake friends we make, Courage is what stops us But don't give up, keep fighting.
And from the times we almost break. Believe in yourself and your abilities,
Courage creates news And you will achieve your dreams.
Our mistakes help us grow, Courage demands more
But at the time, we didn't know. Courage creates blame Onward, through the valleys deep,
We didn't want our weakness to show. Courage brings shame Where shadows dance and doubts may
At the time, we couldn't let them creep,
know. Courage shows in school The road to success, though steep and long,
Courage determines the cool Beckons with a steadfast song.
Our fake friends were there, Courage divides the weak
But they didn't actually care Courage pours out like a leak Each step you take, a testament,
Our secrets they would share, To courage, faith, and firm intent,
And now as we pass, they just stare. Courage puts us on a knee For greatness lies not in the end alone,
Courage makes us free But in the journey, finely honed.
Not breaking means you're strong. Courage makes us plea
You'd know where you went wrong, Courage helps us flee In every trial, a lesson learned,
As if you weren't waiting so long In every setback, wisdom earned,
To explain yourself, but stay strong. With perseverance as your guide,
No challenge can your spirit chide.
So here's to the liars and traitors,
All the wannabes and haters For in the heart of every trial,
And learning from our mistakes Lies the seed of your truest smile,
And learning to spot the fakes. And with each stride, you draw more near,
To the dreams that spark, that vision clear.
Here's to being a teen
Live it up, 'cause we're living the So let not fear or failure sway,
dream. Your steadfast will, your path array,
For on this road, through toil and test,
Lies the essence of true success.
