1. What is the Social Health Authority?
The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is transitioning to the Social Health Authority (SHA) and will from 1st October 2024
manage social health insurance in Kenya.

2. Why was SHA created?


SHA was created to reduce financial hardships due to hospital bills and ease the financial burden for contributors.

3. What is the difference between SHA and NHIF?


The Social Health Authority (SHA) is an improvement of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and will manage three different
funds instead of one.

4. What are the 3 funds that SHA will manage?


• Primary Health Care Fund – Government funded for basic health services. Primary care caters for services provided in
dispensaries and health centres

• Social Health Insurance Fund - for broader health insurance coverage.

• Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund – Government funded for serious and urgent health conditions.

• What Benefits Can I Get When I Sign Up?


- Road rescue services
- Accident and emergency services
- Outpatient care services
- Inpatient care services
- Maternal, newborn and child health services
- Kidney care therapies
- Mental wellness and rehabilitation services
- Surgery procedures (operations) including transplants
- Cancer treatment services
- Medical imaging and other diagnostic services
- Overseas Treatment

REGISTRATION

1. Who needs to register for SHA?


Any person who lives in Kenya should register with SHA. This includes both Kenyan citizens, residents, and refugees.

2. How do I register with SHA?


There are several options for registration:
• Self-registration by dialling *147# on your mobile phone and follow the prompts.
• Self-registration using the SHA portal at www.sha.go.ke
• Assisted registration by your Community Health Promoter (CHP)
• Visit a SHA branch or Huduma centre near you
