Now, anybody has an idea on how to get the
average of a set of data?
How do you get the average?
“Now that we got the average, Did you know that
getting the average is just the same as getting the
mean?”
“Does anybody know what is mean? “
C. Presenting
examples/instances
of the new lesson Computing the mean of discrete probability
distribution
What is mean?
The mean, also known as the average, is a
measure of central tendency in a set of
numerical data. It is calculated by summing all
values and dividing by the total number of data
points. The mean provides a representative
value for the dataset.
So what’s the formula of mean?
The mean of a random variable with discrete
probability distribution is:
μ=X₁•P(X₁) +P(X₂) + … + (Xn) or
μ= ∑X•P(X)
Where :
X₁, X₂, X₃… Xn are the values of random
variable X and,
P(X₁),P(X₂),P(X₃)…P(Xn) are the
corresponding probabilities.
Example 1.
Number of spots
Consider rolling a die. What is the average of
spots that would appear?
Step 1.
Construc the probability distribution for the
random variable X representing the number of
spots that would appear.
D. Discussing new Number of spots Probability P(X)
concepts and
practicing new skills 1 1/6
#1 2 1/6
3 1/6
4 1/6
5 1/6
6 1/6
Step 2.
Multiply the value of the random variable X by
the corresponding probability.
Number of Probability X•P(X)
spots P(X)
1 1/6 1/6
2 1/6 2/6
3 1/6 3/6
4 1/6 4/6
5 1/6 5/6
6 1/6 6/6
Step 3.
Add the result in step 2
μ= ∑X•P(X)=21/6 or 3.5
The mean of the random variable X or the
mean of the probability distribution of X is 3.5
This implies that the average number of spots
that would appear in a roll of a die is 3.5.
Let’s find your average.
Now, the teacher will ask every students in the
E. Developing mastery
room what is their age. And then find the
average age in the room by using the steps in
the board.
Class Test Scores in Statistics and Probability

recently took a test. 8 students got 32, 9 students Step 1.

50 0.133 6.65

So we can say that the
mean of probability
distribution is 40.22.
