Parts Of A Mission
(KISS your plan: KEEP IT STUPID SIMPLE)

• 1.) Utilize patrol base

o 3 Apex:
§ Enter at the 6’oclock
§ 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock
§ At each apex is a machine gun from Weapons Squad
• 2.) Movement to ORP
o Movement Techniques
§ Travelling Overwatch: Not expecting contact

§ Bounding Overwatch: Contact is Expected
§ KEEP 10 METERS IN BETWEEN SOLDIERS AT ALL TIMES DURING MOVEMENT TO
AVOID A WHOLE SQUAD BEING TAKEN OUT BY A GRENADE OR IDF!!
o Order of Movement
§ Security (3rd Squad)
§ Weapons Squad: Gun Team 1
§ PL, RTO
§ Assault 1 (1st Squad)
§ Weapons Squad: Gun Team 2
§ PSG, Medic
§ Assault 2 (2nd Squad)
o ORP (Objective Rally Point)
§ Shaped like a football and has a 10 and 2 o’clock
§ 200 – 300M from OBJ
§ 360-degree security
§ Everyone is counted in and out by PSG and Medic
• 3.) Set Up Security
o While PL is on LR, PSG needs to identify ruck plan, and adjust security
§ Use degrees as on compass as your left and right limits
§ Sector Sketches (TL can get these if their SL left on LR)
o Ruck Plan
§ Extremely important to have especially when IDF hits or when conducting a mission
§ Have 2 people from security squad watch rucks during mission at ORP or RP
§ If it is decided that rucks come on the mission, then have a plan on how they will be dress right dress at
RP
§ Line up rucks by squad in the middle of ORP or RP with enough space in between squads to grab
rucks
• 4.) Leader’s Recon
o PL takes all squad leaders, RTO, and all of security squad (DEPENDS ON MISSION WHO PL TAKES)
§ There is no Leaders Recon for Movement to Contact or Defense, and with a Recon there is no LR prior to
the recon of the OBJ
• 5.) Actions On Objective
o Depends what mission
o LOA is 35 meters past OBJ
• 6.) Special Teams are called
o EPW
o Aid & Litter
o Demolition
o During Special teams get LACE Reports (SL’s are in charge of getting this to PSG as mission is ending)
• 7.) Withdrawal
o “Red: Assault, White: Support, Blue: Security” (NOT FOR A DEFENSE)
• 8.) Reconsolidate
o Reconsolidate at designated location whether that is ORP or RP
o Continue to pass up SITUATION REPORTS to higher
§ SALUTE Report: Size: Activity: Location: Uniform/Unit Time Equipment
§ Suspected enemy locations, current/recent activities, what type of unit friendly force is facing
§ Reports: LACE (after reconsolidation), Enemy Contact, Captured EPW, Casualties
Squads
• 1st Squad: Assault 1
• 2nd Squad: Assault 2

o 2 Automatic Rifleman
o 2 Riflemen
o Each Team Consists of: (except for weapons squad)
§ Team Leader
§ Grenadier
§ Automatic Rifleman
§ Rifleman

Special Teams
• Assign Squads: Primary EPW and A&L, Secondary EPW and A&L, as well as DEMO
• Weapons Squad most likely will not be any of these because they have the big guns, and they will not be running around or
carrying casualties with those large weapons
• EPW:
o Clear In, Search Out
o During assault the assault element will move enemy weapon out of arms reach
o How to Clear an Enemy:
§ Call Primary EPW (2–4 man team)
§ One individual will pull security behind cover pointing weapon at EPW while the other individual log rolls EPW, if
EPW is clear the individual pulling security will yell “CLEAR”
§ If the enemy has a grenade underneath, they will yell “GRENADE” and the individual clearing the enemy will jump
far away and get down and cover their head
§ *IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO CLEAR ALL ENEMIES BEFORE A&L IS CALLED BECASE
ENEMIES THAT ARE NOT CLEARED COULD CREATE A MASS CASUALTY IF THEY HAVE A
GRENADE UNDER THEM*
§ Once Enemy is cleared cross legs
§ A&L can then be called if they are needed, and EPW can now continue searching enemy
o How to Search an Enemy:
§ To search enemy all pockets will be searched, and PIR/SI will be recorded and passed up to PL so PL can send
SITREP to higher
§ Once Enemy is searched cross arms across chest (arms and legs should both be crossed so it is known that the EKIA
has been cleared and searched), weapons will be consolidated in a designated area for DEMO to come in
o Live EPW
§ Separate from other EPW’s, and put them in a separate location than friendly casualties
§ 5S’s: Search, Silence, Segregate, Speed to the Rear, Safeguard
§ Send SITREP to higher that there are live EPW
• Aid & Litter
o Conduct TC3
o Apply tourniquets or stuff wound with gauze
o Bring casualties to designated and marked CCP (CCP can be rolling until element gets to OBJ)
o Separate live casualties from dead after bringing all casualties to CCP (COVER DEAD CASUALTIES BECAUSE
FRIENDLY’S DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEIR DEAD BATTLE BUDDIES)
o PSG will be at CCP to call up nine line
o Enemy and Friendly casualties will both receive aid but at different locations
• Demolition
o This team will come in to destroy any enemy weapons that are already consolidated in a pile
React to Contact:
• Cannot designate roles of squads because you do not know where the enemy will attack from
o Steps:
§ 1.) The team in contact immediately returns well aimed fire and becomes SBF on known enemy
positions and assumes the nearest covered positions. Soldiers receiving fire take up nearest positions
that afford protection from enemy fire (cover) and observation (concealment)
§ 2.) Soldiers in contact assume the nearest position that provides cover and concealment
§ 3.) Lead team locates the enemy
§ 4.) The unit leader maneuvers the assault elements into the assault
§ 5.) The assaulting elements fight through enemy position using fire and movement
§ 6.) The squad consolidates and reorganizes
§ 7.) SL’s report situation to PL
§ 8.) Whenever the element receives contact, they get behind cover and returns fire
• Yells out 3 D’s: Distance, Description, Direction
§ 9.) As the SBF team suppresses the enemy, the SL links up with TL’s and identifies the enemy
§ 10.) Squad determines his COA: Suppressive fire, Assault through, Flank right, Flank left
§ 11.) SL determines the best COA of route based on terrain and flanks left or right
§ 12.) As the assault team pushes through, the SBF shifts fire, lifts fire
§ 13.) Once the assault team finishes the assault, the elements must form 360º security
§ 14.) After the security have been maintained, the SL receives his LACE report from the TL
§ 15.) While the SL sends up the information to higher, EPW, Aid and Litter, and Demo is performed
• Once conducted, locate the sensitive items and casualties back to CCP or ORP

React to IDF
• If IDF hits ORP yell “incoming”, get down and cover neck and head with arms
• Stay and defend THEN finish planning and move OR grab rucks and follow black and gold plan
o Establish new ORP w/360 security
Area Defense
• Developing an engagement area IDDPEPR
o 1.) Identify the most likely avenue of approach
o 2.) Determine enemy scheme of maneuver
§ How is the enemy planning on attacking us?
§ MLCOA, MDCOA
o 3.) Determine where to kill the enemy
§ Gives us the most tactical advantage
o 4.) Plan and integrate obstacles
o 5.) Emplace direct fire weapons
o 6.) Plan and integrate IDF
o 7.) Rehearsals
• Have primary and secondary battle positions to bound back to when taking contact
• Leaders Recon is not necessary
• Yell 3 D’s when taking contact

Reconnaissance
• 3 Types: Get Priority Information Requests (PIR) on Enemy
o 1.) Area
§ Phase 1: Planning at PB and Ends with initiating MVMNT to ORP
§ Phase 2: Element Movement to ORP and Ends at ORP
§ Phase 3: Recon element initiates movement from ORP to OBJ and Ends with Recon of OBJ
• Recon Element (10 Total): PL, RTO, Point Man and a JOE to be left at RP, S&O Team (2
from Security Squad), Left side (2 from security Squad) and Right side (2 from security Squad)
recon element
• Left and Right side recon elements clover leaf each side and collect PIR of OBJ and create a
sketch
§ Phase 4: Recon element reconsolidates at ORP and ends with SITREP of PIR
o 2.) Zone
o 3.) Route
• Fundamentals
o Ensure continuous reconnaissance
o Do not keep reconnaissance assets in reserve
o Orient on the reconnaissance objective
o Report information rapidly and accurately
o Retain freedom of maneuver
o Gain and maintain enemy contact if recon element takes contact
Platoon Patrol Base Instructions (SOP at Camp, not exactly as Ranger Handbook shows: 7-23)
• Considerations:
o METT-TC
o Security and defensive capabilities
o Out of the way f enemy’s sight, natural lines of drift, and major causeways
o Terrain (should be an undesirable location to minimize risk of detection)
o Never occupied for more than 24 hours
o Establish withdrawal plan

• Moving to Patrol Base:

o 1.) Platoon should conduct a security halt (200-300M from PB) while the PL conducts a leader’s recon of the
potential patrol base.
§ LR Group (12 TOTAL): PL, RTO, 2 AG’s (put at 10 & 2), LP/OP (2-man team at 90º dog leg, 1 man
facing 12, 1 man facing 6… GIVE THEM A RADIO AND GOTWA), 1 249 and a JOE at 6 apex, Bravo
Team from Security SQD
o 2.) Platoon leader leaves a two-man Observation Post (OP) at a 90 degree turn from the entrance to patrol base
o 3.) The clear the Patrol Base 35 meters out, set down apexes and security SQD at far limit from 10-2, complete
recon and go back to get the rest of the platoon at security halt and then lead the element to the designated area
for the patrol base

Patrol Base 10 o’clock 3rd Squad 2 o’clock

• Size detected by METT-TC
• Occupied same as ORP
• OP initially positioned along route
HQs
from security halt
• R&S Teams clear to occupation
• Machine Guns positioned at the 2, 1st Squad 2nd Squad
6, and 10 o’clock to cover the front
of the squad to their left

• PL establishes priorities of work
IAW METT-TC
6 o’clock

• Setting Up:
o Emplace Gun Team 1 and Gun Team 2 from weapons squad at 10 and 2 o’clock
o Emplace 1 249 and a JOE at 6 o’clock apex
o Create a triangle from the three squads of a platoon
§ 1st squad occupies the 6 o’clock to 10 o’clock
§ 2nd squad occupies 2 o’clock to 6 o’clock
§ 3rd squad occupies 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock
o Assure SL’s work to emplace squad members within cover/concealment along limits of PB as they establish
hasty fighting positions
o Headquarters’ elements are in the center of patrol base as shown above…. HQ includes Medic, PL, PSG, and
RTO (sometimes SL’s)
o R&S (recon and surveillance) teams are sent out to ensure safety of patrol base
o Establish priorities of work:
§ 1.) Security
§ 2.) Withdrawal Plan
§ 3.) Communications
§ 4.) Mission Preparation/Plan
§ 5.) Weapons Maintenance
§ 6.) Water
§ 7.) Personal Hygiene
§ 8.) Mess (food)
§ 9.) Rest
Ambush: Taking advantage of concealment and the element of surprise to attack unsuspecting enemy combatants from concealed positions
• Concept of Operation:
o P1: Planning is ongoing and ends when the platoon begins movement towards the OBJ
o P2: Movement begins at SP and ends at the ORP.
o P3: Leader’s Recon begins when platoon reaches ORP and ends when Leader’s Recon returns to ORP.
o P4: Execution beings when leaders recon returns to ORP and ends when enemy is destroyed on OBJ
o P5: Reorganization/Consolidation/Withdrawal begins when actions on OBJ complete and ends when platoon has withdrawn from OBJ.

o 5.) Reconsolidation: _______________
Attack: defined as an offensive operation that destroys enemy forces, seizes, or secures terrain
• Two types of attack:
o Deliberate: highly synchronized operations characterized by detailed planning and preparation
o Hasty: occurs during movement to contact with the intent to seize opportunities to destroy the enemy or take initiative

• Concept of Operation:
o P1: Planning is ongoing and ends when the platoon begins movement towards the OBJ
o P2: Movement begins at SP and ends at the ORP.
o P3: Leader’s Recon begins when platoon reaches ORP and ends when Leader’s Recon returns to ORP.
o P4: Execution begins when leaders recon returns to ORP and ends when enemy is destroyed on OBJ
o P5: Reorganization/Consolidation/Withdrawal begins when actions on OBJ complete and ends when platoon has withdrawn
from OBJ.

• Scheme of Maneuver (direct to TMK):

o P1: This phase begins with the receipt of this order and ends when the PLT begins moving from the SP. Critical: TLPs,
rehearsals, PCCs/PCIs
o P2: Movement
§ The platoon will conduct a hasty ORP occupation. 1st Squad will halt. The PL will move to the front of the formation
with the PSG to confirm the ORP site and set the MGs to the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. PSG will reposition 1st
Squad, covering the left side of the ORP from the 12 to 6 o’clock position. PSG will then position 2nd Squad to cover
the right side of the ORP from the 12 to 6 o’clock position. 3rd Squad will consolidate in the middle of the ORP to
prepare for the Leader’s Recon with the PL.
o P3: Leader’s Recon: The Leader’s Recon will consist of the PL, RTO, all Squad Leaders, all of Security SQD
§ 1.) During the Leader’s Recon, the PSG should reinforce the ORP and compile sector sketches, establish a ruck plan,
the remaining Soldiers from 3SQD will guard the ORP/rucks during the mission.
§ 2.) Radios should be redistributed from 1SL and 2SL to the S/O position, Left and Right Security.
§ 3.) PSG counts out LR from the 12 o’clock of the ORP. PL gives GOTWA.
§ 4.) The LR will move to the RP and conduct a SLLS halt. PL marks the RP with sticks, rocks, etc (NEVER A PT
BELT). PL leaves GOTWA at RP.
§ 5.) PL establishes S/O team to maintain eyes on OBJ. PL leaves GOTWA.
§ 6.) PL, RTO and SLs cloverleaf recon the OBJ to establish SBF and Assault positions, LOAs, sectors of fire, TRPs,
etc. Set ABs at SBF position.
§ 7.) Recon element returns to RP and then S/O team to leave GOTWA for S/O.
§ 8.) Leaders Recon moves back to the ORP and is counted in by the PSG.
§ 9.) PL briefs any changes to the plan.
o P4: Attack
§ 1.) LR returns to the ORP and takes the rest of 1st Platoon to the RP.
§ 2.) PL radios S/O to get SITREP on the OBJ.
§ 3.) WSL takes his squad to the SBF position with PSG.
§ 4.) PL will be with 1st Squad and 2nd Squad which will act as the assaulting element and will bound through.
§ 5.) SBF opens fire once given command over radio by PL.
§ 6.) Use radio if possible to initiate/shift/lift (Alternate: whistle blasts 1 to attack, 2 to shift, 3 to lift)
§ 7.) Assaulting element moves to the last covered and concealed position before beginning assault. (Shift then lift fire)
LOA 35m past OBJ. 1SQD and 2SQD reposition to establish 360 degree security on OBJ. WSL repositions guns for
hasty defense.
o P5:
§ 1.) S/O position moves back to the rest of 3SQD and helps to bring up rucks to the OBJ with the rest of 3SQD. 3SQD
can then be used for extra security or to set up OPs.
§ 2.) EPW teams are called. TLs will collect LACE reports (redistribute ammo, water, etc)
§ 3.) Aid and Litter (move to designated CCP, likely in center of OBJ)

• Tasks to Subordinate Units:

• Timeline:
Movement to Contact: An offensive task used by commanders to develop the situation and to establish or regain contact with the
enemy
• One of four offensive tasks: Movement to Contact, Attack, Exploitation and Pursuit
• Friendly moves into contact with enemy (usually you have a general idea of where enemy is)

• Concept of Operations:
o P1: Planning is ongoing and ends when the platoon begins movement towards possible enemy location.
o P2: Movement to Contact begins at SP and ends when the platoon makes contact.
o P3: Contact begins when platoon makes contact and ends when platoon has destroyed enemy forces.
o P4: Reorganization/Consolidation ends when actions on OBJ are complete, and platoon is in 360 security.

• Scheme of Maneuver:
o P1: Planning: This phase begins with the receipt of this order and ends when the PLT begins moving from the SP.
Critical: TLPs, rehearsals, PCCs/PCIs
o P2: Movement to Contact
§ 1.) Route (azimuth/distance and include at least one SLLS halt near beginning):
_______________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________
§ 2.) PLT movement technique should be traveling overwatch with lead squad at least 50 meters ahead of the
rest of the platoon.
§ 3.) When crossing a phase line within 300 meters of suspected enemy location, transition to bounding
overwatch.
§ 4.) When in bounding overwatch, the platoon will be in a formation similar to a platoon-vee: 1st and 2nd SQD
will be on line with each other with 3SQD in the rear. Gun team 1 and the PSG will be trailing 1SQD and
Gun team 2 and the PL will be trailing 2SQD.
§ 5.) 1st and 2nd Squad will use successive bounding. 1SQD will bound forward 50-100m. Then 2SQD will
move on line. 3SQD will slowly trail in the rear. PL and PSG will coordinate bounding their respective
squads over the radio.
o P3: Contact
§ Once a squad makes contact, they will become the SBF element. Both MGs will move up to the SBF. PSG
will take charge of the SBF. PL will assess the situation and direct a squad not in contact to take up
rear/flank security and take another squad to become the assaulting element.
§ If 1SQD is first in contact, 2SQD will become assaulting element. 3SQD is security.
§ If 2SQD is first in contact, 1SQD will become assaulting element. 3SQD is security.
§ If 3SQD is first in contact, 2SQD will become assaulting element. 1SQD is security.
§ Use radio if possible to initiate/shift/lift (Alternate: whistle blasts 1 to attack, 2 to shift, 3 to lift)
§ Assaulting element moves to the last covered and concealed position before beginning assault. (Shift then lift
fire) LOA 35m past OBJ.
§ SBF element moves through OBJ. LOA.
§ Establish 360 security on OBJ. Adjust/reposition gun teams.
§ If the PL determines that the platoon should break contact, squad will bound away from the enemy, using the
radio to coordinate bounding.
o P4: Reorganization/Reconsolidation:
§ EPW teams are called. TLs will collect LACE reports.
§ Aid and Litter (move to designated CCP)

• Tasks to Subordinate Units:

It is (time) what are your questions? BACKBRIEFS - INSPECTIONS - REHEARSALS CALL TO HIGHER BEFORE MOVING OUT!
TIPs FOR A MISSION
• THE MISSION IS ALWAYS PUT FIRST
o If IDF hits, casualties are taken, or there is a minefield during a mission assess the situation and make a plan to
continue the mission because the mission needs to be completed. DO NOT RISK A MASS CAL FOR DEAD
CASUALTIES, OR BECAUSE YOU GET FLUSTERED
o Always have a plan for taking contact in the middle of a mission, IT WILL HAPPEN!
• Give WARNO within 5 minutes of receiving brief from higher
o When issuing WARNO brief tasks to subordinate units, timeline, and what each squad’s responsibility will be –
ASLT 1, ASLT 2, Security, Weapons
o PL needs to tell each SL what rehearsals they need to be doing
§ Ex of rehearsals: A&L, How to clear an enemy, How to cross an LDA, Practice actions on as a squad,
How to react to IDF
• Follow TLP’s
• Delegate tasks and OPORD paragraphs
o Situation: SL can do it
o Mission: PL briefs
o Execution: PL briefs this
§ Orient everyone to TMK when briefing this paragraph
§ Always have primary and alternate plans especially for shift and lift fire
• Shift Fire Primary: 1 whistle
• Shift Fire Alternate: Everyone yells shift fire
• Lift Fire Primary: 2 Whistles
• Lift Fire Alternate: Everyone Yells Lift Fire
o Sustainment: PSG briefs
o Command and Signal: RTO can brief
§ Have a PACE PLAN
• Ex: Radio, Runner, Voice
• Pull Squad Leader’s or Team Leader’s to do TMK
o Make sure the TMK is oriented to the correct direction
o Have TL’s look at TMK before it is destroyed so they also understand the terrain and mission
• Designate a Pace Man and Compass Man (2 people)
o Pace Man can make the route plan on the map
o Have someone in the back of the formation checking azimuth as mission goes on because you will get lost
• SL’s need to do rehearsals during the time that PL is working on OPORD
o *IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE PLATOON LEADER MAKES SURE THE SQUAD LEADERS KNOW
THE MISSION AND EXECUTION BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES EXECUTING THE PLATOON
LEADERS PLAN*
• Make sure all questions are left for the end of the brief!!!

• AS A PLATOON LEADER YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE MISSION TO THE FULLEST EXTENT
TC3 (Tactical Combat Casualty Care)
• 3 Phases:
o 1.) Care Under Fire
§ Suppress fire
§ Ask patient 4 questions
• 1.) Can you hear me?
• 2.) Can you get to cover?
• 3.) Can you perform self-aid?
• 4.) Can you return fire?
§ Move patient to a somewhat secure location when situation permits
§ Apply a HASTY tourniquet and check pulse
• High and tight
• Write a “T” on patients’ forehead so during evacuation it is known that a tourniquet has been applied
with the time it was applied
o 2.) Tactical Field Care
§ Reassess tourniquet
§ Massive Bleeding:
• Sweep the body for additional bleeding starting at the neck moving down the torso to legs and finishing
with the arms (wipe hands consistently so you can identify what part of the body the bleeding is coming
from as sweeping is being completed)
§ Airway:
• Open the mouth (using the jaw thrust OR head tilt chin lift method)
• Look in mouth, listen, feel
• Nasal Pharyngeal Airway (NPA) Insertion on unconscious or patient struggling to breathe
o Measure from nose to ear
o Lube with lubrication in IFAC or patients’ blood or spit
o Insert with cut part towards septum
§ Respirations:
• Check rise and fall of chest
• Place arms, one palm up and one palm down on chest while placing ear to chest to feel/listen for
sucking chest wound
• Sucking Chest Wound
o Tape sticker/gauze to entrance wound on all 4 sides
o Log roll patient
o Check for exit wound on back and if there is one tape sticker/gauze on all 4 sides
§ Circulation:
• Bandage wounds
• Move hasty tourniquet to deliberate but keep hasty one on until deliberate is finished being applied
• Check pulse on limb of tourniquet
§ Hypothermia/Head Injury
• Apply a blanket, replace wet clothing
• Sweep head for bleeding or brain tissue

§ PAWS: Pain, Antibiotics, Wounds, Splinting

• Administer pain medication/antibiotics to wounded soldiers if appropriate
• Monitor for other wounds
• Breaks/Burns
o Check arms and legs for breaks by twisting limb in opposite direction then apply splint
o For burns check for charred clothing, reddened skin, or blisters
• Transport patient to evacuation site
• Document all injuries and pain medication administered on TC3
o 3.) Tactical Evacuation – 9 Line
