Procedure Sheet 2024-25

Course information: World History Honors, #510, full year

Teacher information: Mr. Brian Smithe, [email protected], before school- room

301, after school- room 301. I prefer students to contact me in person for individual
assistance during the school day. Parents should contact me via email for the fastest
return response.

Required materials: students need to bring their CHARGED Chromebook, textbook,

loose leaf paper, a folder, a blue or black pen, and a notebook to every class. A pencil
may be required on exam days. The specific textbook for the course is World History:
ISBN-9780544668225.

Assessment of learning: The students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities will be assessed
throughout the semester. These assessments will include self, peer, and teacher feedback
to help the student monitor his or her own progress and identify areas where additional
focus and growth are needed. Some assessments will be used formatively for the sole
purpose of providing information to the student and teacher during the learning process.
This will include all practice work accomplished during class and at home. Other
assessments will be used in a summative manner to measure the achievement after units of
learning. Summative work may include unit tests, final papers, and culminating projects.

Grades Determination: Homework will consist of student discussions via a

discussion board and reading assignments. The discussion board for each unit is
posted on Google Classroom and will be renewed for each new unit. The learning
accomplished while completing the homework will be evident in quizzes, tests and
projects as well as through thoughtful engagement of classmates in discussion on the blog.
Academic performance in this class will be scored on a straight point system and
grades will be updated regularly. Due to the fact that students will have ample
opportunities to track their progress, “extra credit” is not available at the end of the
semester. There MAY be SOME opportunities for true extra credit during the
semester. Grade increase requests and “round ups” will not be considered at the end
of any term.

Google Classroom will include a running history of all in class work. Students who
are absent will have ready access to what occurred in class each day.

Work is expected to be ON TIME. The student should see Mr. Smithe if this will be a
problem on a specific assignment. Mr. Smithe will be the only party to determine when an
assignment will be accepted late (IF EVER). He also reserves all rights to not accept late
work after dates that he determines. Mr. Smithe will act in ways that he believes to be
ultimately fair in terms of grading. He really wants you to succeed, but also wants you to
be responsible for your grades. Please note the following grade book comments:
“Not Turned In” I am waiting for this to be turned in, but will not wait forever. I reserve
the right to permanently give no credit after waiting more than one week for an
assignment with this designation.

“Incomplete” or “Late” You missed a hard deadline or waited too long to submit the
assignment. This assignment may no longer be turned in under regular circumstances

At the end of the semester, academic performance will be calculated on a straight

point system in order to determine the semester score.

Coursework Standards: School work is essential to student learning, therefore it is

expected that all submitted work will be of the highest quality possible. Presenting work
in a neat and organized manner exemplifies respect for the learning process. All work,
artistic or written, should include the MLA heading as illustrated below:

Student Name

Mr. Brian Smithe

World History Honors, Period _

15 August 2024.

When applicable, written or typed work must also include the MLA properly formatted
Citations and Works cited page.

All paper-based written work should be completed in INK on LOOSE LEAF PAPER.

Work requiring artwork or graphics are usually completed with pencil and art materials.

Make-up work: If a student is absent, it is his/her personal responsibility to obtain all

missed notes and instructions for assignments from the teacher or a fellow student. THE
TEACHER WILL NOT FOLLOW UP WITH ABSENT STUDENTS. Assignments and
tests completed on time are regularly graded quickly. If an assignment is turned in late, I
cannot guarantee that those grades will be received in a timely manner.

Make-up work is due within 2 days of the excused absence. See me if you foresee any
problems.

Missed Exams: Honors students are regularly present for all exams. In extreme
circumstances requiring missing an exam, the student is responsible for quickly making up
the exam. For security and exam curve purposes all student grades are held until all
students have taken the exam. If you miss an exam, you will be required to make it up on
the very next scheduled day in the after school testing center. Co-curriculars and other
engagements will not be an excuse. Exams not made up on the very next day will lose a
letter grade for each missed scheduled make up exam day. You have registered for an
Honors class. You must prioritize your academics over other engagements and desires.
Students who miss the day before the exam will still be required to take the exam with the
rest of the class. Absences for test days have reached an alarming level. Students who
miss the exam on the day it is administered will not be eligible for any curve offered to the
class. Early final exams are not permitted; missed finals must be completed after
exam week.

Excessive Absences: Instruction and activities for this course are structured for in-person
learning; therefore, the student’s regular attendance and active participation are essential.
Excessive absences may result in a grade reduction or loss of credit.

Academic Integrity: Students are expected to conduct their own learning in a just and
responsible manner. In order to honestly demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities,
students must produce their own evidence of learning. Together we will explore what it
means to responsibly refer to the work of others in contrast to unethically relying on the
work of others or on electronic/AI sources. Instances of academic dishonesty will be
referred to the deans.

AI is a growing concern. While there are not many tools at a teacher’s disposal for
detecting AI use with absolute certainty, there are generally good tools (including
Turnitin.com) which will be used. Papers submitted of a suspicious percentage of AI
content will need to be rewritten or may not be accepted for a grade at all. To protect
yourself, do not use AI for any purposes in your work for this class.

Classroom Conduct: The Carmel Catholic High School Discipline Code as outlined in
the Parent and Student Handbooks will be followed in this class. DRESS CODE AND
TIMELINESS ARE ENFORCED. As a diverse classroom community, we will strive to
build and maintain an equitable and inclusive environment, understanding that our unique
identities shape our perspectives. Embracing our diversity is a shared responsibility, which
not only makes us stronger but is also a call to justice.

An atmosphere of RESPECT for self and others must be maintained at all times within the
classroom! We can have a good time if you EARN that right by being respectful,
courteous, and responsible to yourself, fellow students, and the teacher. Some guidelines
to assist the teacher and students with maintaining RESPECT are as follows:
1. Speak productively when a raised hand is recognized. Never talk over someone
else.
2. Speak to others in a respectful manner. Though you will not always agree with
others, recognize that are entitled to their opinions and that differing opinions lead
to healthy discussion.
3. Be an active listener and an active participant in class activities.
4. Do not degrade yourself or others in the classroom.
5. Be respectful of the property of fellow students as well as that of the teacher.
6. Take personal responsibility for your actions—you will be more respected for
admitting mistakes than making excuses or passing blame on to others.
7. Be IN YOUR DESK BEFORE the second bell rings, IN DRESS CODE before
entering the room, and fully prepared to start class with your phones stowed.
8. Cheating is completely unacceptable and will result in Dean Referral and Failure.
9. Keep up to date with the class calendar, website, and Google Classroom for this
class.
10. ONLY WATER IS ALLOWED. NO OTHER DRINKS OR FOOD. You will
receive a detention for food or other drink.
11. Get to know Mr. Smithe as a person and he will do the same with you.

Technology: The Carmel Catholic High School policies on Audio/Video

Recording/Photography and Technology will be enforced within the classroom. Please
review these policies in the Student Handbook. Every attempt will be made within the
classroom to incorporate technology where the instructor and students feel that it is
appropriate. Gaming and other off task behaviors will not be tolerated and are subject to
detention. No pictures or video are EVER allowed in the classroom without the PRIOR
consent of the teacher. You will be treated as adults with technology. If you find that
your own off task behavior (or that of others) is harming your performance in this class,
please see Mr. Smithe for assistance. PHONES MUST BE PLACED IN THE CLASS
STORAGE POCKETS BEFORE THE BELL RINGS. THEY MAY NOT BE
VISIBLE DURING CLASS UNLESS SPECIFIC PERMISSION HAS BEEN
GRANTED IN LIMITED SITUATIONS. HEADPHONES/EARBUDS ARE NOT
ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM WITHOUT SPECIFIC TEACHER
CONSENT. Do not even arrive to class using these items. A detention will be issued
without question for their use.

Attendance and Tardiness: You must be present during class time daily.
Carmel Catholic High School policy requires me to keep you in the classroom at all times.
Therefore, THREE emergency bathroom passes per semester will be provided. Please
regulate your liquid intake and use the bathroom between classes and at lunch. Please
have the school nurse contact me if you foresee a specific problem with this rule.

The Carmel High School Attendance Policy as outlined in the Parent and Student
Handbooks will be followed in class. Mr. Smithe’s Contact Preference is via EMAIL.
[email protected]

Academic Problem Solving: Concerns should first be shared by the student to the
teacher directly; then if merited, the student should share the concern with a counselor.
The counselor may then connect with a parent, Department Chair, and the Student
Services Team.
