Course Name: Design of Machine Elements Assignment No: 1
Q. Description Marks CO
No.
1 The shaft shown in figure is driven by pulley B from an electric motor. Another belt 5 1
drive from pulley A is running a compressor. The belt tensions for the pulley A are
1500 N and 600 N. the ratio of belt tensions for pulley B is 3.5. The dia of pulley A is
150 mm and the dia of pulley B is 480 mm. the allowable tensile stress for the shaft
material is 170 MPa and the allowable shear stress is 85 MPa. Taking torsion and
bending factors as 1.25 and 1.75 respectively, find the dia of the shaft.

2 Design a cast iron protective type flange coupling to transmit 15 kW at 900 r.p.m. 5 2
from an electric motor to a compressor. The service factor may be assumed as 1.35.
The permissible stresses are: Shear stress for shaft, bolt and key material = 40 MPa,
Crushing stress for bolt and key = 80 MPa and shear stress for cast iron = 8 MPa.

1 Design a bushed-pin type of flexible coupling to connect a pump shaft to a motor 5 3
shaft transmitting 40 kW at 1000 rpm. The overall torque is 25 percent more than the
mean torque. The allowable shear and crushing stress for shaft and key material is 40
MPa and 80 MPa respectively. The allowable shear stress for cast iron is 15 MPa.
The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 MPa. The material of the shaft,
key and pin is same.
2 A safety valve of 60 mm diameter is to blow off at a pressure of 1.2 MPa. It is held 5 4
on its seat by a close-coiled helical spring. The r maximum lift of the valve is 10 mm.
Design a suitable compression spring of spring index 5 and providing an initial
compression of 35 mm. The maximum shear stress in the material of the wire is
limited to 500 MPa. The modulus of rigidity for the spring material is 80 MPa.
Calculate: (i) diameter of the spring wire, (ii) mean coil diameter, (iii) number of
active turns and (iv) pitch of the coil.

Q. No. Description Marks CO
1 Design a screw jack for lifting a safe load of 150 kN through a maximum lift of 350. 5 5
The elastic strength of the material of the screw may be taken as 240 N/mm 2., in
tension and compression and 160 N/mm 2 in shear. The nut is to be made of phosphor
bronze for which the elastic strength in tension, compression and shear are 130, 115
and 100 N/mm2. The coefficient of friction for the screw as well as collar may be
taken as 0.15. The factor of safety for both screw and nut may be taken as 2. The
design should include the design of (i) screw, (ii) nut and (iii) cup and handle. Also
find the efficiency of the screw jack.
2 A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with another plate by a single 5 6
transverse weld and a double parallel fillet weld as shown in figure. The maximum
tensile and shear stress are 70 MPa and 56 MPa respectively. Find the length of each
parallel fillet weld, if the joint is subjected to both static and fatigue loading.
