The diagram shows a mass spectrometer that is being used to determine the mass spectrum
of germanium. The two-line shown are for the isotopes of 70Ge and 76Ge. Singly charged
germanium ions are accelerated from rest between plates X and Y. They then pass through
crossed magnetic and electric fields in the region between plates A and B. Finally, they enter
the D-chamber at point § and strike the photographic plate P. The magnetic field in region A-
B and the D-chamber is a uniform B = 0.500. The masses of the 70Ge and 76Ge ions are 1.17
x10 kg and 1.27 x10 kg respectively, and are both travelling at 2.00 x 10° m/s when they
