Date:

Write an essay that analyzes the context behind the Ramayana and the
illustration inspired by the same legend. Your essay must explore three
kinds of context: culture, medium, and artistic tradition.

First, your essay must explain one of the cultural references in the
Ramayana that a reader outside that culture may not understand. Next,
your essay must show how the difference in medium between the text of
the Ramayana and the painting changes the story. Finally, your essay
must compare the differences in interpretation between the author of the
Ramayana and the illustrator.

Your essay should include the following elements:

 Explanations of all three types of context that can help a reader

understand the Ramayana and the legend that it's based on: culture,
medium, and artistic tradition

 A thesis statement that describes the scope of the essay

 An introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion

paragraph

 Transitions that make reading the essay smoother for readers

You should have completed a draft of this assignment in the activity

before this one. If you haven't done so, go back and complete that activity
now.
Ask yourself these questions as you revise:

 Does my introduction paragraph present my thesis statement and

provide some background about the legend behind the Ramayana?

 Do I show an understanding of the three types of context explored in

the lesson? Do I discuss them one at a time in my three body
paragraphs?

 Do I support my explanation of the cultural background of the

Ramayana with information from sources?

 Does my conclusion paragraph remind the reader of my thesis

statement and the main points of my essay?

 Do my transitions guide the reader from one topic to the next? Do they
help the reader understand when I'm making comparisons between the
illustration and the text?

Use this rubric to determine how well you're meeting the criteria for the
assignment.
The Ramayana story has very old-fashioned ideas of honor that are
not followed by today's standards which shows the loyalty they had to
their culture. Dharam is an ancient place practice in the Hindi religion
which mainly focuses on practical morality and the correct way of living.
The Ramayana is a great example of the way that they use cultural and
religious traditions but this also translates to our modern ways of life. The
laws of Dharma are followed in the Ramayana but human behavior is
always tested and often fails.

Sugriva tests his faith when he doesn't believe that the gods have
the right to help Rama which is strange since their culture is extremely
spiritual why would the god help their people they think? Sometimes they
do end up involving themselves mostly because Rama is a liar and they
are Sugriva and they seem to be driven by anger which is not always the
best way to handle everything. Since these people are loyal to their gone
their gods want to protect Rama. Before every battle, they all party to
their gods which will usually give them good luck in battle. Which is
sometimes a little strange thing to do between the two.

The Median of the Ramayana and the illustration are not too
different some might say. The illustration shows anger loyalty and
tradition which is a very good deception when Sugriva is confronting his
brother in battle. The Gods in the background just like the story was told
waiting to step in but they know they can't because it is against their
beliefs. Sita is shown begging Bali not to fight because if she were to fight
she is a god and gods aren't supposed to fight. The angry monkey by the
Sala trees is Sugriva. The depiction of the scene of the Ramayana right
before battle is powerful because it shows the entire culture in one
illustration. It is nearly difficult to try to see these types of illustrations
and decipher it without understanding the story behind it however having
some knowledge of gods and royalty it almost tells the story on its own.
Therefore that is why the Median of the Ramayana and the illustration are
not too different some might say

The artistic tradition between the two which are represented by

many characters, colors, and jewels The story describes the jeweled
clothing and the castles being grand. The Sitka trees are majestic in
description. The illustration captured the tone of the event that was
taking place. Therefore that Is why the Ramayana was not very relatable
but the illustrations bring a more human feeling instead of being so
different and not like the others. Therefore, this shows that the illustration
has my details and so much can be seen in it. It just gives a very clear
vision of it just because of how it was written.

To sum up everything that was stated the Ramayana story has very
old-fashioned ideas of honor that are not followed by today's standards
which shows the loyalty they had to their culture. Dharam is an ancient
place practice in the Hindi religion which mainly focuses on practical
morality and the correct way of living. While the Ramayana is a great
example of the way that they use cultural and religious traditions this also
translates to our modern ways of life. The laws of Dharma are followed in
the Ramayana but human behavior is always tested and often fails.
The Ramayana is an awesome poem that was written by sage Valmiki.
This poem describes the story of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his
brother Lakshmana as they have many issues with their journey. The
Ramayana which is a very old-fashioned idea of honor that is not followed
by today's standards shows the loyalty they had to their culture. Dharam
is an ancient place practice in the Hindi religion which mainly focuses on
practical morality and the correct way of living. For you to get a better
understanding of the Ramayana story you will need to understand the
cultural context of the story and the differences between visual
art/literary art. Therefore, with me writing this essay, you will get a
greater understanding of all three of the elements.

One cultural concept that is essential to learn is dharma. Dharma duty,

which is a righteousness, moral order that comes from the Sanskrit
translation. Dharma is a gigantic part of Rama's life and his own which is
now changed because of this moral guiding principle. For example,
Rama's permanent band and being banished from ever coming into the
forest occurs due to a promise a boon that his father, King Dasharatha,
made to Rama's stepmother. Therefore, without another question in his
mind, Rama bans himself for life. That is why to an audience without
cultural context, this seems to be such a bad thing to witness but even it
is like he is sacrificing himself. However, he is doing this for the greater
good of his people. Therefore, the actions made possible by their duty to
help for the greater good.

The Ramayana is a poem like no other due to the fact this it is just
perfect. There are stanzas and rhymes, imagery and sensory details, and
a speech that uses a lot of emotion. Such a poetic formation makes the
audience's ability to relate to the character a lot easier because everyone
has emotions. Also, the elements of dharma that align or do not align with
one's understanding of time within stanzas or chapters, and the setting.
One thing is though, where the story becomes important, pieces of the
journey become images and the important parts focus on moments. Sita
is shown begging Bali not to fight because if she were to fight she is a god
and gods aren't supposed to fight. The angry monkey by the Sala trees is
Sugriva. The depiction of the scene of the Ramayana right before battle is
powerful because it shows the entire culture in one illustration.
Therefore, this just shows how the poem provides dharma through huge
amounts of internal conflict.

Retellings and reimaginations of the Ramayana characterize different

artistic traditions, unraveling varied layers of meanings for the characters
and incidents in the work. Valmiki presents Rama as a human prince and
a divine figure, fully cognizant of his vulnerability grieving over separation
from his beloved Sita, and extending compassion to all beings. Traditional
Indian art forms usually depict him as a foremost deity adorned with
divine symbols, an aura radiating with light, and endowed with
extraordinary powers. Such portrayal accentuates Rama's divine nature,
almost a eulogy in view of Indian artistic traditions wherein he is revered
as an avatar of Vishnu, one of the revered deities of Hinduism. In contrast,
Valmiki's text often looks into Rama's inner dilemmas-his sorrow from
being apart from Sita-and compassion for all living things. By
foregrounding his divine attributes, visual art depicts him as longitudinally
idealized, whereas the original text delves into the nuances of Rama's
character, effectuating a interfusion of semi-god and human dimensions.
These differences show how artistic tradition may influence how mythic
personages are perceived, with each medium and tradition drawing out
unique aspects in the narratives.
