A/ Comprehension
Read the passage below then do the activities that follow.
Famous for creating the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell was an inventor and a teacher
of the deaf. Bell received a patent for the telephone in 1876. The patent acknowledged him as the
inventor of the telephone. Since that time, it has become one of the world's most important
communication devices.
In the mid-1870s, Bell began work on the telephone with Thomas Augustus Watson. Many
of the ideas that went into the development of the telephone had been known for years. However,
the sound of the voice had never been sent over wire. On 10 March 1876, Bell successfully sent a
sentence by telephone. In a deliberate test, Bell spoke these historic words: ‘Mr Watson – come
here – I want to see you.'
Alexander Graham Bell continued his interest in science, invention and the education of
deaf people for the rest of his life. He died on 2 August 1922. At the time of his burial, every
telephone of the Bell system in the United States and Canada was kept silent for one minute.
