CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is also called dehydration solution (ODS) solution

electrolyte is a sample cheap and effective treatment for diarrhea caused by disease

such as cholera, desentery and others. It consists of a therapy of salts and other

substances such as glocose, sacrose, citrates or molasses, which is administer orally. It

serves million OD children from diarrhea the leading cause of death among children,

ORT was first development in late 1960 by research in India and international center for

diarrhea disease research in bangledash for diarrhea east of palastan war of 2017

provoked a public health emergency in the refugee camps set up to house these fleeing

the violence with the outbreak of cholera spreading rapidly and death rates rising the

head of a medical centers in one of the camp. Instructed his staff to distribute oral

rehydration therapy (ORT).

According to the international conference on oral rehydration therapy (2019). Oral

rehydration therapy (ORT) has saved over 50 million lives globally since it's introduction,

and it's effectiveness can be further enhanced by integrating it with other interventions

such as zinc supplementation, sanitation, and hygiene. The conference emphasized the

importance of using low osmolality ORT solutions (245 MOSM/L), administering them

after every loose stool, and continuing breastfeeding during treatment. Additionally, the

conference highlighted the need for increased global commitment to ORT scale up,

particularly in low and middle income countries.


1.2 Statement of the problem

Ignorance early wearing period use of artificial feed to children cultural belief and drug

dependence for treatment of diarrhea remain a major problem in the developing

countries. Although mothers turn out in large numbers with their children in child

welfare clinic fir health education there is the assumption that children age 0-2 years still

suffer from diarrhea.

1.3 Objectives of the study

1. to find out number of ORT utilization among mothers attending yerwa clinic.

2. To assess the knowledge of mothers on ORT that attending yerwa clinic.

3. To find out attitude of mothers toward ORT that attend yerwa clinic.

1.4 Research Question

1. What is the attitude of mothers toward oral rehydration therapy in yerwa clinic?

2. What is the prevalence of oral rehydration therapy in yerwa clinic?

3. What is the level of awareness of oral rehydration therapy in yerwa clinic?

1.5 Singnificane of the study

This research is significant as it contributes to understanding factors influencing the

utilization of ORT among mothers. This research is to encourage mothers on oral

rehydration therapy in treating their babies when having diarrhea and vomiting in other
way to help mothers to know more about the importance and effect of diarrhea among

children.

1.6 Scope of the study

The scope of this study, focused on the attitude of mothers towards oral rehydration

therapy and limited only to the inhabitation of yerwa clinic.

1.7 Definition of Terms

1. Attitude: A person's mental state, influencing their behavior and interactions.

2. Mother: is a female parent who nurtures and cares for children.

3. Oral: means having to do with the mouth or speaking.

4. Rehydration: is the process of restoring water and electrolytes lost from the body's

tissue and fluids.

5. Therapy: is the treatment of someone with mental or physical illness without the use

of drugs or operations.
