SOLVE FOR THE BASE SHEAR

OF THE FOLLOWING
Elevation of a five-storey residential reinforced concrete building is to be built in
Landayan, San Pedro, Laguna. The building is as follows

Soil Profile Type A

Seismic Source Type A
Distance to the Nearest Fault = 2.4km
Building is SMRF
Weight per floor = 1200kN
Weight of roof = 900kN

Find the Base Shear using NSCP 2015 code

NSCP Values

 I = 1.0 (Standard Occupancy, Table 208-1)

 Z = 0.4 (Zone 4, Table 208-3)
 Na = 1.46 (Interpolated, Table 208-5)
 Nv = 1.95 (Interpolated, Table 208-6)
 Ca = 0.467 (Table 208-7)
 Cv = 0.624 (Table 208-8)
 R = 8.5 (Special RC Moment Frame, Table 208-11A)
 T = 0.691s (Equation 208-12) < 0.7s
𝐶𝑣 𝐼 (0.624)(1.0)
 V= 𝑊 = (5700kN) = 605.57kN
𝑅𝑇 (8.5)(0.691)
2.5(0.467)(1.0)
 Should not be more than: V = (5700kN) = 732.91kN
8.5
 Should not be less than: V = 0.11(0.467)(1.0)(5700kN) = 292.81kN
 Since Zone 4
0.8(0.4)(1.95)(1.0)
should not be less than: V = (5700kN) = 418.45kN
8.5

Therefor Base Shear, V = 605.57kN

Vertical Distribution of the Base Shear
Portal Method

*Draw a sketch of the simplified frame obtained by inserting an

internal hinge at the midpoint of each member of the given frame.
Now the frame is determinate
4𝑉 = 165.16𝑘𝑁
𝑉 = 41.29𝑘𝑁

*Assuming that the shears in interior columns are twice as much as in

exterior columns, determine the column shears by applying the equation
of horizontal equilibrium to the free body of the upper portion of the
frame.
4𝑉 = 165.16𝑘𝑁 + 176.17𝑘𝑁
𝑉 = 85.33𝑘𝑁
4𝑉 = 165.16𝑘𝑁 + 176.17𝑘𝑁 + 132.12𝑘𝑁
𝑉 = 118.36𝑘𝑁
4𝑉 = 165.16𝑘𝑁 + 176.17𝑘𝑁 + 132.12𝑘𝑁 + 88.08𝑘𝑁

4𝑉 = 165.16𝑘𝑁 + 176.17𝑘𝑁 + 132.12𝑘𝑁 + 88.08𝑘𝑁 + 44.04𝑘𝑁
𝑉 = 151.39𝑘𝑁
෍ 𝐹𝑥 = 165.16 − 41.29𝑘𝑁 − 𝐴𝐵 = 0

𝐴𝐵 = 123.87𝑘𝑁 ෍ 𝐹𝑦 = 33.03 − 𝐴𝐴 = 0

෍ 𝑀𝐴 = 165.16 2 − 123.87 2 − 𝑉𝐵 = 0 𝐴𝐴 = 33.03𝑘𝑁

𝑉𝐵 = 33.03𝑘𝑁
෍ 𝑀 = 165.16 4 − 123.87 4 − 33.03 2.5 − 𝑀 = 0

𝑀 = 82.585𝑘𝑁. 𝑚
*Continue doing such until the member forces and moments are solved.
