Part A: Identifying Sentences, Phrases, and Clauses

1. Identify if the following is a sentence, phrase, or clause:


o Running down the hill.

o She danced beautifully.

o After the rain stopped.

o The cat with green eyes.

2. Decide if each group of words is a complete sentence or just a phrase:


o On the way to school.

o She is reading a book.

o Jumping over the fence.

o Because he was tired.

3. Mark each as a phrase or clause:


o Although he was late.

o My favorite book.

o Singing in the shower.

o After the game ended.

4. Identify the main clause in these sentences:


o Even though he was tired, he finished his homework.

o She waited patiently while I packed my bag.

o When the sun sets, we’ll start the fire.

5. Determine if the following is a dependent or independent clause:


o Because she missed the bus.

o I enjoy reading books.

o Although he worked hard.

Part B: Sentence Types


6. Classify the sentence as declarative, interrogative, imperative, or
exclamatory:

o She enjoys playing the piano.

7. Rewrite each sentence as the type specified:


o I love ice cream. (Interrogative)

o Will you join us for dinner? (Imperative)

o He passed the test. (Exclamatory)

8. Identify the sentence type:

9. Change each declarative sentence into an exclamatory sentence:

Part C: Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences
