Ans) Gender and sex are two terms that are often confused and used
interchangeably. Sex refers to the biological differences between
men and women, whereas gender refers to socially acquired
characteristics, roles, and attributes connected to the individual’s
sex. The different roles given to boys and girls as deemed fit by
the society they live in constitute the definition of gender.
Q.3) Mention some factors on the basis of which inequality is being practiced in India.
Ans) Caste, religion, the class background, sex whether male or female etc.
Q.4) Why was Ramabai given the title ‘Pandita’?
Ans) It was because she could read and write Sanskrit. It was a remarkable
achievement as women were not allowed such knowledge those days.

Q3. What are the similarities between rural and urban women’s conditions?
A3. The rural and urban women both work hard for their family but their work is
considered unaccountable and unproductive. They face discrimination and do not
get their rightful place in the family and society.

Q1) How does the gender equality help a democratic country?
A1) Gender equality is essential as:
1. Gender inequality hurts the interest of not only girls and grown up women, but also
of boys and men, who play an important role in achieving gender equality.
2. Equal sharing of responsibilities and a harmonious partnership between a man and
a woman are necessary for the well being of their family as well as Indian
democracy.
3. Shared power and responsibility between woman and man at home, in workplace at
national and international levels would help to create harmony within the family and
society.
Q2) What are the Government efforts to eradicate inequality:
Government Efforts to Eradicate Gender Inequality
● The Government of India has upheld the cause of women empowerment and women’s
movement in many ways. It has passed many laws that abolish social evils such as sati,
dowry,
child marriage, female foeticide, female infanticide, etc.
● The Government has passed laws raising the minimum age of women’s marriage to 18
years
and legalising widow remarriage.
● It has taken steps to promote education, the lack of which is one of the major causes of
gender inequality in India.
● The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme was launched in 2015 by the Government of India
to protect the girl child. It encourages girls to pursue education. Most schools and
universities in the county support it by offering discounts on fees to encourage more
girls students to enroll. This scheme also ensures that daughters inherit their family’s
property.
● Laws have been passed that grant equal share to women in their husband’s and
father’s property.
● Programmes have also been launched to increase economic opportunities for women.
