RATIONALE
Climate change refers to significant, long-term changes in the global
climate (Shafer, 2023). It affects everything from the sun, earth, and oceans to
wind, rain, and snow, as well as human activities. In essence, it involves a
lasting shift in the average weather patterns that define local, regional, and
global climates (Bolles, 2016). Climate change has far-reaching effects on our
planet, particularly on the weather. As global temperatures rise, it leads to
more intense and unpredictable events like droughts, hurricanes, and floods
(Lindwall, 2022). Additionally, the current levels of human consumption and
the growing population are significantly harming the natural environment and
contributing to climate change (Swim et al., 2011). Leaders, including
President Joe Biden of the United States, emphasize the urgent need for bold
action to address the climate crisis. This includes commitments to create a net
zero-emission, resilient future and the requirement for the international
community to embark on a decisive decade of climate action (USD
Department of State, 2021).
Historically, climate change represents the long-term alteration in
Earth’s climate and weather patterns. Convincing the scientific community that
human activity could alter the planet's climate took nearly a century of
research and data (Labs,1952). In the 1800s, experiments suggesting that
human-produced carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases could collect in the
atmosphere and insulate Earth were initially met with curiosity rather than
concern. By the late 1950s, CO2 readings began to provide compelling data
that corroborated the global warming theory. An abundance of data, along
with climate modeling and real-world weather events, confirmed the reality of
global warming and its catastrophic consequences. Greenhouse gas
emissions blanket the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and leading to global
warming and climate change (Onion,2023). The world is now warming faster
than at any point in recorded history, posing significant risks to human beings
and all other forms of life. The last decade, 2011–2020, is the warmest on
record, with each subsequent decade since the 1980s being warmer than the
previous one. Higher temperatures increase heat-related illnesses, make
working outdoors more difficult, and contribute to the increased frequency and
intensity of wildfires. In response to this global crisis, the government enacted
the Climate Change Act (Republic Act 9729) to systematically address the
growing threats to community life and the environment.
Internationally, climate change refers to long-term shifts in
temperature, precipitation patterns, and other atmospheric conditions on
Earth. It's largely driven by human activities that release greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere, leading to the warming of the planet. Climate change
poses significant challenges for Japan, affecting various aspects of its
environment, economy, and society. The country experiences extreme
weather events, rising sea levels, and shifts in precipitation patterns, all of
which are attributed to global warming. Japan relies heavily on fossil fuels for
energy production, particularly after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011,
which led to increased carbon emissions (MEJ 2020). and industrial activities,
including manufacturing and transportation, contribute to greenhouse gas
emissions, exacerbating climate change (IGES 2019). Moreover, Japan's
densely populated urban areas result in higher energy consumption,
transportation emissions, and waste generation, contributing to climate
change (JETRO 2021). Additionally, Japan's susceptibility to typhoons,
earthquakes, and tsunamis is exacerbated. Additionally, the Japanese
government has been promoting green finance initiatives to encourage
investment in environmentally sustainable projects. This includes issuing
green bonds and establishing frameworks for green finance (Japan Times
2020).
Nationally, climate change’s impact on the Philippines is most often
associated with extreme weather disturbances such as typhoons and floods,
which, in turn, affect many other sectors of economic life. (Rincun and
Virtucio, 2008). According to Climate Links (2018), the Philippines is highly
vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise,
increased frequency of extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and
extreme rainfall. Recent scientific assessments have confirmed that the
warming of the climate system since the mid-20th century is most likely due to
human activities, leading to the observed increase in greenhouse gas
concentrations from activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and land use
change (Pagasa, 2022). This vulnerability is due to its high exposure to
natural hazards such as cyclones, landslides, floods, and droughts, its
dependence on climate-sensitive natural resources, and its vast coastlines,
where all major cities and the majority of the population are located. In 2009,
Congress passed the Climate Change Act, establishing the Climate Change
Commission (CCC) to develop policies and coordinate government programs
on climate change. The CCC developed the National Climate Change Action
Plan to address the impact of climate change on development in the
Philippines (World Bank, 2013).
Locally, the impact of climate change on Davao City has been
profound, with visible effects such as rising sea levels, increased occurrences
of extreme weather events like typhoons, heat waves, floods, and storms, and
notable shifts in weather patterns (Meteoblue, 2023). Human activities,
including burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and improper waste disposal, are
significantly influencing the climate. In Agdao, Davao City, the improper
disposal of waste by many residents has led to road flooding, emphasizing the
costly impacts on essential services, infrastructure, housing, livelihoods, and
health. This has underscored the urgent need for sustainable practices to
protect the environment. According to the UNEP (2024), climate change is a
global phenomenon that substantially affects urban life, with these activities
contributing to increased greenhouse gases, exacerbating the greenhouse
effect and global warming (Climate Action, 2020). International aid
organizations, civil society groups, academic institutions, government
agencies, and various stakeholders have collaborated on numerous efforts to
address these challenges (NDRRMC, 2017). It is crucial to address the local
impacts of climate change through collective and sustainable measures to
safeguard the well-being of the city and its residents. By raising awareness,
implementing effective policies, and promoting responsible environmental
stewardship, Davao City can strive towards a more resilient and sustainable
future in the face of climate change.
CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT
Climate change is a rising problem in the world wherein many have
suffered due to man-made activities. One of its effects is the recent fire that
occurred in Barangay 21-C Piapi Boulevard, resulting in the loss of many
homes due to its rapid spread. This fire was exacerbated by the intense heat,
leading to a higher number of affected households. Furthermore, we can
clearly see the messy and dirty surroundings in this area, as if the people here
are indifferent to their situation, despite the fact that their health and livelihood
are being affected. As this problem arises, we must empower youth to change
their way of living and the perspective of people. As we undertake on a
journey to contribute to positive changes in the world we must use effective
strategies to combat climate change through tree planting and community
clean-up campaigns. The primary objective of this project is to inspire and
empower young individuals to take action, such as actively participating in
tree planting initiatives. Trees act as natural barriers that hinder the spread of
fires by obstructing the movement of flames. Additionally, they play a crucial
role in mitigating the effects of intense rainfall in communities, particularly in
terms of flood prevention. Trees have the ability to absorb excess water,
reducing the risk of flooding. By strategically planting trees in this area, we
can also improve air quality by transforming carbon dioxide-laden air into
fresh and clean air. The scope of the Community Clean-up project also
involves engaging youth in cleaning driveways and canals, which helps
educate everyone on proper waste disposal practices.
These projects provide us with the opportunity to create positive
changes in our environment and contribute to the ongoing fight against
climate change. The actions we take today will have a long-lasting impact on
the well-being of our planet and the quality of life for future generations. As
young individuals, we have the power to bring about change and become
leaders and advocates for a greener and more sustainable world. It is up to
us, the youth, to unite early on and find solutions to address the root causes
of climate change.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the project, which aims to empower youth leaders for
a sustainable future and contribute to a greener world, are as follows:
The project aims to inspire and motivate the next generation of leaders
to drive positive change and take action towards building a more sustainable
planet. By providing education and awareness on environmental issues, the
project seeks to instill responsibility and encourage youths to make eco-
friendly choices.
The project aims to promote the implementation of various
environmental practices within the community. This includes organizing
community clean-up drives to address waste management issues and
conducting tree planting activities to support reforestation efforts.
The project aims to educate individuals on the importance of protecting
the environment. By raising awareness about the impacts of human activities
on the planet.
The project seeks to ensure accountability and measure the
effectiveness of its initiatives in achieving the stated objectives.

REFLECTION
As we reflect on the various issues we are currently facing, such as
flooding, extreme weather events, rapid wildfires, and rising sea levels, it
becomes evident that these are signs of climate change, and our planet is
deteriorating at an alarming rate. This calls for immediate action to address
the crisis. As youth, we acknowledge our role in contributing to this crisis
through our daily actions, whether it be driving private cars or utilizing public
transportation. This realization has prompted us to reassess our lifestyle
choices and seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint. We, as youth, are
taking action by implementing measures that can help reduce our impact on
the environment.
This includes engaging in community clean-up drives and tree planting
initiatives. By participating in these collective actions, we can make a positive
change and empower others to do the same. We, as the youth of today,
possess the ability to enact change and become the voices of change in our
communities. We have the power to take action and work towards the
betterment of society. It is crucial that we come together as a community and
work towards a sustainable future. By taking responsibility for our actions and
inspiring others to do the same, we can make a significant difference in
addressing the challenges of climate change.
