➢ INTRODUCTION:
➢ In recent years, an increasing threat to ground water quality due to human
activities has become great importance. The adverse effects on ground water
quality are the results of man’s activity at ground surface, unintentionally by
agriculture and industrial effluents, unexpectedly by sub- surface or surface
disposal of sewage and industrial wastes.
➢With this background , a study should be carry out to assess the quality of
groundwater. In this study , I choose the rural area around the
slaughterhouse industry in Aligarh District of northern India.
➢The purpose of this study is to investigate the deterioration in water quality
at different places mainly focusing on rural areas including impact on
human health.

➢ GENERAL PROBLEMS FACING BY THE VILLAGERS :
• Incidence of flies /insects and mosquitos in high numbers spreading infection.
• Very bad odour from slaughterhouse.
• Chocking drains containing water with blood and debris.
• Drinking water contamination.
• Pungent odour from burning of fats and bones.
• Poor air quality.
• Residents could not spend time outside their home due to bad odour
➢ HEALTH RELATED PROBLEMS :
• STOMACH INFECTION IS COMMON.
• DENGUE FEVER IS COMMON DUE TO LARGE NO. OF MOSQUITOS.
• DIARRHOEA PROBLEMS IN INFANTS.
• EXCESSIVE COUGHING.
• RESPIRATORY AND ASTHMA DISEASE IN OLD AGE PEOPLES.
• HEADACHE/BODY ACHE IS COMMON.
➢ RESEARCH AIM AND OBJECTIVES:
• The aim of this research is to assess the Impact of slaughterhouse industry
effluents on the groundwater quality in study area.
The study shall pursue the following objectives:
• Identify the biological, physical and chemical concentration of groundwater
within and rural areas around the slaughterhouse industry.
• Compare the concentration of the groundwater with the Central Pollution
Control Board (CPCB) standard for drinking water.
• Determine the possible impact of Slaughterhouse in study area.
ABOUT THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE INDUSTRIES IN STUDY AREA :
➢ The first slaughter house was established in the year 1992 and gradually 6
meat factories were established with in 7km from the city centre Aligarh.
One along Anupsahar road ,4 along Mathura by pass road and 1 along G.T
road (towards new Delhi).
➢ For ground water quality investigation, I have selected the rural area near by
slaughter industries which are located at Mathura by pass road .There are 4
industries at Mathura by pass road. These are-
➢ Frigorifico conserve Allana sons Ltd. Was established in 1992. Two other
factories established along Mathura by pass road at Talashpur khurd village
were H.M. AGRO industries Ltd. In 2010 and Al TABARAK FOOD AND FROZEN
in 2011 . In Amarpurkondla village AL DUA FOOD PROCESSING PVT LTD.
Industry was established in 2011.
➢ From these factories and processing units over 25,000 animals slaughtering
daily and disposing the waste in open fields and blood in open drains i.e.in
➢ TYPES OF WASTE GENERATED IN SLAUGHTERHOUSES:
1. SOLID WASTE: Solid waste are made of carcasses ,bones , scraps
of inedible tissue , hooves , feather .These solid waste can contaminant the
ground water in the form of leachate. This leach consist largely of solid
microbial organism and in some situation shallow wells more dangerously
polluted.
2. LIQUID WASTE :Liquid waste usually composed of chemicals, blood ,
gut content ,urine and fat /oil etc.
3. GASEOUS WASTE :It include mal-odorous gases which result from
putrefaction ,decomposition of organic matter and the smoke from burning
of hides of these animals leads to the pollution of the atmosphere.
➢ SOURCE OF WASTE GENERATED IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE
➢ From Animals Urine and dung.
➢ From slaughtered animals carcass, bones, hooves rumen ,
intestine content, Blood etc.
➢From Water used for cleaning the meat and floors.
➢From Chemical reagent and detergent used in washing the floors.
➢From water used in clean the cooling process equipment and meat
storage tanks and vehicles.
➢ GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WASTE OF SLAUGHTERHOUSE :

GENERAL TREATMENT SCHEME OF WASTE WATER IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE
➢ HOW GROUND WATER POLLUTTED FROM SLAUHTERHOUSES
WASTE?
• Untreated wastewater from meat processing typically contains high levels of
oxygen demanding substances (like blood, fat, urine, and feces), total
suspended solids, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, oil and grease, fecal
bacteria, and pathogens.
• These pollutants percolates in the ground along with rainwater and reach
the ground water level.
• The percolating water pickup a large amount of dissolved impurities and
reach the aquifer system and contaminates the ground water.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION :
➢After analyzing the general problems of villagers and bad impact on their
health due to the presence of slaughterhouses near by the villages.
➢Testing the quality of groundwater is necessary.
➢Water sample collection shall be done from total 15 points.(14 from 7
villages +1 from with in the slaughterhouse ) and points may be increase as
per project need.
