Geometry and Polarity of Simple Compounds/Molecules

Perform this activity by pair. Be guided with the following directions and rubrics. Kindly
submit your printed output to your teacher on or before October 25, 2024. (Additional 5
points will be given to an output with proper documentation pictures of pair
collaboration while doing this performance task).
Directions

1. Access the PhET Simulation:


o Open the PhET "Molecule Shapes" simulation: Molecule Shapes Simulation
2. Set Up the Simulation:
o Click on "Real Molecules" to see how atoms form molecules.
o Experiment with the different atoms and bonds. Create at least 3 different
molecules using the simulation. Take note of the atom combinations you are
using.
3. Task 1: Exploring Bonding and Lone Pairs
o Choose one central atom.
o Add single bonds around it, and observe how the molecule's shape changes.
o Now, add lone pairs around the central atom and notice how the shape adjusts.

Questions:

o What happens to the molecule’s shape when you add more bonds?
o How does adding lone pairs affect the shape?
Take screenshots of each stage and label them with the type of shape observed
(e.g., linear, bent, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, etc.)
4. Task 2: Identifying Real-World Molecules
o Switch to the "Real Molecules" tab.
o Select three real molecules (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, NH₃) and analyze their molecular
shapes.

o How do the lone pairs impact the geometry in each case?
5. Task 3: Application of VSEPR Theory
o Based on your observations in the simulation, use the VSEPR theory (Valence
Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) to predict the shapes of the following molecules:
 CH₄ (Methane)
 H₂O (Water)
 BF₃ (Boron Trifluoride)
 NH₃ (Ammonia)
