PURPORT
By accepting the six Gosvämés as his instructing spiritual masters, the author specifically
makes it clear that one should not be recognized as a Gaudéya Vaishnava if he is not
obedient to them.
Ädi 1.38
Shree Cjaitanya Mahaprabhu, appeared in this world for 48 years. The first 24 years of
his life is called as Aadi Leela. In the Aadi Leela we read about how the Lord has sent
many of his intimate associates to this world to prepare for his coming. Such great souls
as Nilambar Chakravarti, Jagganath Mishra, Sachi Mata, Madhavaendra Puri, Ishvar Puri,
Advait Aacharya, Shrivas, Haridas Thakur, all of his eternal residents of Goloka
appeared, just to prepare every thing for the coming of the Lord. And then it describes the
Devine conception of Sachi Mata. And then on that most celebrated of all nights full
moon night of the month of Falgun, The Lord Shri Krishna appeared as beautiful son of
Sachi Devi. That is explained in Chaitanya Charitramruta. Then it describes His
childhood pastimes, His pastimes as a youth, His marriage to Lakshumi Devi and while
he was traveling in East Bengal making disciples, preaching the glories of the Lord,
Lakshumi Devi was bitten by the serpent of separation and when He returned, His mother
requested that He marry again. And thus he married Vishnu Priya and the beautiful
pastimes of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s grihasta life is described and at the age of 24 His
mother was aged. She was although seventy years old, she was the widow and she has no
other children, all she has one daughter in law Vishnu Priya, was only sixteen year old.
But for the sec of providing His causeless mercy to the world He accepted the sanyas
order of life. He went to Katwa, where he receives sanyas from Shrila Keshav Bharati
Maharaj. And that junction when he took sanyas the Madhya Leela begins. The Madhya
Leela describes how Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu after taking sanyas on his way to
Vrindavan, Lord Nityananda, tricked him to go back to Shanipur, meeting His mother
and all of His friends. And upon his mother’s request he decided too settle in the Holy
place of purushottam Shetra Neeladri, Shri Jagganath Puri Dham. He spends some time
there and then on the plea of finding His elder brother, Shankararanya Swami, who
previously was Vishwarupa, after taking sanyas and leaving home, he decided to take a
tour of south India. This lasted several years. He traveled to all the Holey places, to all
Holey people and he converted literally hundreds and thousands of people to His nama
sankirtan movement. He also met Shree Ramanand Raya. He discovered the Bramha
Samhita and Krishna Karnamrita during His travels. When He returned to Jagganath Puri,
and for some time he was remaining there and every year with the Ratha Yatra ceremony
all the Devotees from Bengal would come to Puri to spend several months with
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. And it describes the beautiful chanting, dancing, festival they
would have together. Madhya Leela also describes Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s great
longing to go to Vrindavan. How on many occasions he tried and on one occasion on rout
to Vrindavan in the village of Ramakeli, He met Rupa and Sanatan Goswami. And then
of course Sanatan advised Him to go back because there was a large crowd with Him.
And after some time He going to Vrindavan, and there it was a grand reunion Krishna
was returning to Vrindavan, the leaves, the trees, the river Jamuna, all the animals every
one was so happy to meet Krishna again. And there, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the
ecstasy, of the highlight of His love He simply immerse His consciousness being in the
Holy abode of Shree Vrajadham and then he return to Jagganath Puri. And after some
years, the Mahya Leela is for six years, then he began to very much withdraw Himself
from the public seen and enter in to very very deep and uncontrollable feelings of
separations. And at that junction the Antya Leela begins. For eighteen years he did not
leave Jagganath Puri. During the Antya Leela he simply remained in the divine
meditation of Shree Radharani’s love to Lord Shree Krishna. So the Aadi Leela is first
twenty four years of His life and the Madya Leela and Antya Leela are of second twenty
four years of His life. Through out all the life of Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu although
he taught the greatest scholars Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, He defited Keshav Kashmiri,
Prakashanand Saraswati, Vyankat Bhatta. He instructed Sanatan, Rupa. In this way the
most elicits of all His teachings through out the history of all creation, eminated from
mouth of Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. But during His whole life he only wrote with His
own hand eight verses and that is the Shikshastakam. And he specially spoke to Rupa and
Sanatan and told them that, every thing I have spoken, everything I have said I am
entrusting to you to put in writing to make it available for all classes of man for all time.
Therefore any one who claims to be a devotee of Lord Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,
who doesnot very rigidly worship the Lotus feet of the six Goswamis, and carefully study
their literature is not at all to be considered a genuine Gaudya Vaishnava. Krishnadas
Kaviraj Goswami is explaining here that by accepting six Goswamis as spiritual master
the auther specifically makes it clear that one should not be recognized as Gaudya
Vaishnava, he is not obident to them. In fact Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at one time
Sanatan Goswami , because he was suffering from very very terrible physical element, he
considered himself so polluted and useless that he wanted to commit suicide. But Shree
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu ordered him not. He said I must do many special things through
your body. Through you I will reveal all the holey places of pilgrimage in Vrindavan to
the world, which has been essentially forgotten. Through you I will establish beautiful
temple worship and teach the world how to worship diety and see Krishna in this way .
through you I will establish the highest principles of exemplary Vaishnav conduct in
which all devotees should follow in foot steps. Especially through you I will extract the
essence from all the scriptures and establish the path of pure devotional service to Shree
Krishna. So these were the four essential instructions given by Shree Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu to Sanatan Goswami, to Rupa Goswami and of course other four Goswamis
of Six Goswamis. They simply dedicated their lifes for these four things. Who
remembers what they are? What is no. one? 1) To excavate and re establish the holey
places of Vrindavan,
2) Is to establish temple worship,
3) Is to establish the highest example of Vaishnav conduct and etiquette,
4) Is to extract the essence of all the scriptures of the world to establish that Prema bhakti
(pure devotional service) is the ultimate goal of the life and how to achieve it.
So all of the great devotees of the Lord in the line of Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are
gaining their information from the Six Goswamis of Vraja Dham. For instance we are
reading Chatanya Charitramruta but from where does this information come from. It
came from Raghunath Das Goswami, who heard it from them and Rupa Goswami. Every
chapter Shree Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami ends with, “ Shree Rupa Raghunatha pade
yar aye das, Chaitanya Charitamrita kohe Krishna das.” That falling at the Lotus feets of
Rupa and Raghunath I Krishna Dsa narrate Chaitanya Charitramruta. And all of the great
histories and biography of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are directly or indirectly coming
through the grace of Six Goswamis. They were His divinely empowered representatives
on this earth. In fact recently we were reading about when Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
was dancing with the ratha yatra, so beautifully He was dancing and He was chanting a
particular prayer of separation of Radha, in Her mood of love for Krishna and it was in
codes and no body could understand what it meant except Swarupa Damodar. Swarupa
Damodar was none other than Laleeta sakhi and in Goloka Vrindavan, Laleeta sakhi
aware of every emotion of Shreemati Radharani so that she could be right there to serve
them. So Swarupa Damodar could always understand the purport to Shree Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu’s ecstatic symptoms but no body else. They were very very private and very
very confidential. But at one time Shree Rupa goswami wrote in beautiful hand writing
on a palm leaf the purport to that verse. And he put it in 14.32 latch and went to take
bath. Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Swarupa Damodar Goswami came at that time to
the hut and he happened to see that verse. And when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu read it, His
heart was filled with ecstasy. And He turned to Swarupadamodar Goswami and said how
it is possible, that Shrila Rupa Goswami intimately understood the most confidential
thought of my heart. And Swarupadamodar says I could understand because you have
completely bestowed upon him your infinite causeless mercy. And Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu turns to Swarupadamodar and He said, “yes what you are saying is correct.
When I met him and his brother in Prayag , because of humility and sincerity to surrender
their life to the Lotus feet of Shri Krishna and because I saw them certainly qualified and
capable and they were full recipients for my mercy.” He said, “I bestowed upon them my
full mercy to broadcast the essence of my heart to the world.” So this is the glorious
position of Six Goswamis in Vrindavan. And here Krishna Das Kaviraj is humbly
following at the foot steps 16.3 as he does after every single chapter he ends by following
at the feet of Six Goswamis, giving all credit to them. When we read Shrila Prabhupada’s
books and even when we read Shrila Bhakti Pada’s books or even the books by Bhakti
Vinoda Thakur, Bhakti Sidhanta Saraswati, translations of Vishwanath, Narottam das’s
beautiful songs, we should know what they all are saying is all coming through the via
medium of the Six Goswamis. Shrila Prabhupada describes to us on many occasions that
we should pray to the lotus feet of Six Goswamis to kindly always protect us and help us
in Krishna consciousness.

There are innumerable devotees of the Lord, of whom Sréväsa Thäkura is the foremost. I
offer my respectful obeisances thousands of times unto their lotus feet.
Here we find something very beautiful. First he is offering his obeisances to two types of
spiritual masters, instructing Guru and the diksha (Initiating) Guru. And here he is
personally describing his indebtedness to all of his instructing spiritual master. Another
words he is taking the dust from the lotus feet of all the Vaishnavas on his head before he
begins this great work of Chaitanya Charitramrita. Of course we should learn to follow in
his foot steps by learning how to glorify and truly appreciate the mercy of the
Vaishnavas.

Sréla Nityänanda Räma is the plenary manifestation of the Lord, and I have been initiated
by Him. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto His lotus feet.
We told the story on the first day of how the Lord Nityananda appeared in the dream to
Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami and mercifully passed His glance upon him and told him , “
Go to vrindavan , all your desires will be fulfilled.” According to here we find this was
the initiation of Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami. Because he pleased Lord Nityananda by
defending His good name, Lord Nityananda accepted him as His personal disciple and
gave him instructions. Of course the seal of the initiation is not just the ceremony the seal
is when the disciple follow the instructions. 19.40 When we take initiation we take the
vow to be obedient to the Guru. The Guru gives his instructions and when we follow that
instructions, of course it’s the continuous process, then the initiation is truly confirmed.
Formally as far as the formality is confirmed after the second initiation but in spirit it is
not. The spirit it is confirmed when the devotee surrenders to the order of Guru. And the
spirit is far more important than formality. Formality is only a facilitation to create that
spirit of that loving exchange between the spiritual master and disciple. So here Shree
Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami is explaining that Lord Nityananda is his initiating guru.

Having offered obeisances unto the Lord and all His associates, I shall now try to explain

There are many unalloyed devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all of whom
are considered associates surrounding the Lord. Krishna should be worshiped with His
devotees. The diverse principles are therefore the eternal paraphernalia through which the
Absolute Truth can be approached.

yadyapi ämära guru—caitanyera däsa
tathäpi jäniye ämi täìhära prakäsa
TRANSLATION
Although I know that my spiritual master is a servitor of Sré Caitanya, I know Him also
as a plenary manifestation of the Lord.
PURPORT
Every living entity is essentially a servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and
the spiritual master is also His servant. Still, the spiritual master is a direct manifestation
of the Lord. With this conviction, a disciple can advance in Krishna consciousness. The
spiritual master is non different from Krishna because he is a manifestation of Krishna.
Lord Nityänanda, who is Balaräma Himself, the first direct manifestation or
expansion of Krishna, is the original spiritual master. He helps Lord Krishna in His
pastimes, and He is a servant of the Lord.
Every living entity is eternally a servant of Sré Krishna Caitanya; therefore the spiritual
master cannot be other than a servant of Lord Caitanya. The spiritual master’s eternal
occupation is to expand the service of the Lord by training disciples in a service attitude.
A spiritual master never poses as the Supreme Lord Himself; he is considered a
representative of the Lord. The revealed scriptures prohibit one’s pretending to be God,
but a bona fide spiritual master is a most faithful and confidential servant of the Lord and
therefore deserves as much respect as Krishna.
Sakshat Haritwena Samasta Shastre, that the spiritual master should be worshiped as
Krishna Himself. Because he is in the position like a Viceroy. When the king does not
personally come to the foreign land he will send a Viceroy. And it is the duty of the
citizens to treat the Viceroy as they treat the king. Any offence against the viceroy is
offence against the king. And any gift you offer to viceroy is the gift given to the king.
But if the viceroy thinks any thing is for him, then he looses his position. The king will
not tolerate that. So in the same way the spiritual master is simply the surrendered servant
of the Lord. And because of his surrender he is very dear to the Lord. Infact he is more
derar to the Lord than the Lord Himself. Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu when he was
preparing to leave for His south Indian tour, He brought His devotees together to ask their
permission. It is described in the Bhagwatam that the absolute trouth is avigya and
swarat. That means infinitely independent and all knowing. Then why Lord is asking
permission. Because He explained to them that I am simply bound by your love. I am
subordinate to your love. He said to give up my own body will not be difficult for me, but
to give up your association is too painful to even consider. Its worst than death. Therefore
I can understand, that my love for you is far greater than my love for myself. The beauty
of nature of Krishna is completely gives Himself, sent percent to the love of his devotees.
Therefore the devotees are more grater than Krishna and the spiritual master of that
devotee who is taking all risks, making all sacrifices just to help others to love Krishna.
Therefore he is the topmost servator of Krishna. And the desciple must see the spiritual
master in this light, that he is the top most srvator of Krishna. It is also explained in the
Chaitanya Charitamrita, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is talking to Haridas thakur and He is
reaviling His mind and He is weeping. He is saying I have no peace of mind. I am in so
musch anxiety, in Kaliyuga people are suffering so badly due to ignorance and illusion.
The supreme Lord like a father, He feel that grate pain when He sees those souls
suffering due to ignorance. And Haridas Thakur, being a perfect servant, he said to Shree
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, that my Lord you have come to this world and just chanting of
Holey name is enough to liberate all the universe. And in this way Shrila Prabhupada
explains that, Haridas Thakur wanted to passify the pain in the heart of Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu. The pain of seeing His children suffering due to maya. And he says
therefore there is no grator service that one can rendor to the Lord than this. Helping
Him, to bring His children back home back to God head. And the spiritual master is one,
who is taking all risk. Who is willing to die for the sec of bringing others back to Krishna.
Therefore the spiritual master is the most confidential servant of the Lord. And therefore
as we treat the guru, we treat the God. Sakshat Haritwena Samasta Shastre. That we
worship the guru as we worship the God. But here Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami is
confirming that his spiritual master and of course he is talking about all of these grate
souls who are inspiring and enliving him in Krishna conceousness. That the spiritual
master is worshiped as good as God. But at the same time one must understand that the
guru is always in the position of servant. Why do we worship him as good as God,
because he is so dear to Krishna. Nama Om Vishnu Padaya, Krishna Preshthaya Bhutale,
Shrimati Bhaktivedanta Swami iti namine. What does that mean? What is the translation?
I offer my obeisances to my spiritual master, because he is most dear to Krishna, having
taken shelter of His Lotus feet. This is why we worship guru as good as God. This is why
we see our guru as representative of God. Of course Prabhupada often saying Guru is
heavy. What does that mean? It is expalined that if you put every ones opinion in one side
of the scale and Guru’s opinion on the other, the Guru 30.20 others. All philosophers, all
sientist, every one. Why? Because his word is the word of God. Reading from
Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami, its verey very clearly described exactly how the spiritual
master should be understood non different from Krishna.
