PROJECT TITLE
An investigation comparing the offensive records of basketball players Kobe Bryant and Allen
Iverson using descriptive statistics.
1
PURPOSE OF PROJECT
Basketball is a team sport. It consists of two teams having five players each trying to score by
shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a
rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two
main sections by the mid-court line. The world’s most famous basketball association is known as
The National Basketball Association (NBA). This is a pre-eminent men’s professional basketball
league in North America and is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional
basketball league in the world.
Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson being two of my favorite basketball players, both play in the
same position, shooting guard for their teams. In this research paper I would like to compare who
plays better during these two seasons (1999-2001). Analyzing the number of points scored and
the number of assists made by both players will be done. The points recorded is used to keep
track of the score in a game and assists are attributed to a player who passes the ball to a
teammate in a way that lead to a score by field goal.
The purpose of this project is to determine who is a better offensive player between Kobe Bryant
and Allen Iverson in the NBA during the period from1999-2001. This would be achieved
through the computation and comparison of measures of central tendency and dispersion together
with basic probability calculations.
Responding variables: Number of points scored per game and Number of assists made per game.
2
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
In order to analyze the two basketballers, research was done to find the points scored and the
number of assists over the two seasons from 1999-2001 by each basketballer. The information
was collected through secondary data; that is the data that has already been collected through the
primary sources and made readily available for researchers to use for their own research. It is a
type of data that had already been collected in the past. Therefore, Information pertaining to
Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson's performance in basketball was found on the website
https://www.basketball-reference.com . In total 50 observations of the number of points scored
and the number of assists made from two seasons 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 was collected on
this website. The data used in this investigation was quantitative (numerical) discrete data. The
steps carried out are as follows:
Step 1: ID numbers from 1-200 were assigned to each match record for Kobe Bryant.
Step 2: Using Microsoft Excel Random Number generator, random numbers from 1-200 were
generated and their corresponding match records were collected.
Step 3: In each of these match records, the number of points per game and assists per game were
recorded on a table for games of Kobe Bryant.
Step 4: The procedure was repeated for Allen Iverson match records.
See Appendix 1 for the raw data of Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson scored in 1999-2001.

Discussion of findings
Kobe Bryant has the higher mean (4.80) and median (5) number of assists for the 2001 season
than Iverson however his mean number of assists for the 2000 season are below Iverson’s. When
comparing the mean and median number of assists, Kobe Bryant’s mean for 2000 of 4.54 is
greater than Iverson’s 4.48. In addition, for the 2001 season he has a greater a modal number of
assists than Iverson. Overall it can be said that Bryant was marginally more valuable to his team
in terms of providing assists over the two seasons than was Iverson. Although Bryant had an
improved number of assists in 2001. It must be noted that over the two seasons Kobe Bryant
distribution of number of assists included outliers which were removed before making
comparisons. The effects of removing these outliers were evident in the reduced mean number of
assists and standard deviation and also reduced the skewness of Kobe Bryant’s distributions. The
distributions of their number of assists for both players over both seasons were therefore
symmetric. This means that most of the observations were close to the measures of central
tendency: mean, mode and median. Kobe Bryant was known to be an exceptional player and
therefore extremely large scores would be an occasional feature of his game.
Kobe Bryant has the higher mean (30.42) and median (31) points tally for the 2001 season than
Iverson however his mean points tally for the 2000 season are below Iverson’s. When comparing
the mean and median number of points scored, Kobe Bryant mean and median for 2001 are
(30.42 and 31) respectively is greater than Iverson’s (29 and 27.5) but for the 2000 season
Iverson have a greater mean and median number of points scored than Kobe. This suggests that
both players are almost the same at acquiring point per games. Although both have an
improvement points tally in 2001, it must be noted that over the two seasons Kobe has a great
improvement from 23.46 to 30.42 while Iverson is remained almost constant 28.02 and 29. Kobe
Bryant is known to be a most valuable player and high scores would be an occasional feature of
his game.
The number of assists made by both basketball players was shown to be symmetrical when
looking at the respective boxplots and histogram. The standard deviation of the assists made by
Kobe Bryant in 2000 season (2) is greater than Iverson (1.96) however in 2001 season his points
are below Iverson (2.51 vs 2). Furthermore when comparing the interquartile range and range of
assists Kobe and Iverson has the same for 2000 season (3 vs 3) however, in 2001 Iverson’s
interquartile range is slightly greater than Kobe (4 vs 3 ). In addition, the interquartile range for
the number of points scored is greater for Iverson (15 vs 12) and it appears that Iverson is
therefore less consistent than Bryant based on this measure of dispersion. Using the probability
calculated, approximately 5% of Kobe’s assists made exceeded the mean number of assists made
by Iverson indicating that Kobe is a more valuable to his team than Iverson based on the assists
made
The distribution of the number of points scored by both athletes appear to by symmetric when
looking at their respective boxplots and histograms. Allen Iverson has the higher standard
deviation than Kobe this suggesting there is more variability in Iverson’s distribution of point In
addition, for the both season Allen Iverson interquartile range and range are greater than Kobe
(15 vs 10 and 15 vs 12), (40 compared to 29 and 47 compare to 37 ) respectively. It appears that
Iverson is less consistent than Kobe based on these measures of dispersion. Using the probability
30
calculated approximately in 2000 season 74% of Allen Iverson points exceeded the mean
number of points scored by Kobe while in 2001 season 3% of Kobe points exceeded the mean
number of points scored by Iverson. This indicated that Iverson performed slightly better than
Kobe based on the number of points scored.
31
Conclusion
Based on the analysis carried above, Kobe Bryant is the better offensive player than Allen
Iverson because he has the overall higher measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
with respect to both points scores and number of assists. In addition, Kobe Bryant is the more
consistent player of the two with overall lower measures of dispersion. This suggests he is a
greater asset to his team as an offensive forward than is Allen Iverson. Kobe’s number of assists
is more than Allen Iverson however his point scored is slightly lower than Allen Iverson, but
overall Kobe is the better player offensively because his position allows him to vary over the
court. Although both players play point guard and shooting guard. Kobe Bryant seems to be a
more valuable player to his team since his points and assists are higher compare to Allen Iverson.
For further research on this topic, we can compare the records of these athletes, as well as other
players in the NBA using statistical hypothesis testing of their means. Also, a comparison of
American based NBA players and European basketball players can be carried out and other
variables or game statistics can also be used to make comparisons such as the number of shots
and blocks. Investigations including data for players across different time periods can also be
considered as a means of studying the effect of sports technology on performances.
