2. The pair of equations y = 0 & y = -7 has ......... solution(s).
3. Given the linear equation 3 x + 4 y – 8 = 0, write another linear equation in two variables
such that the geometrical representation of the pair so formed is parallel lines. .........
4. Find the value of k for which the given pair of linear equations has no common solution.
4 x + k y = 5 , 8 x + 12 y = 10. .........
5. Find the value of p for which the given pair of linear equations has infinite many
solutions; 4 x + 3 y − 4 = 0 & p x + 9 y + 12 = 0. .........
Two-mark questions:
1. Find the value(s) of k so that the pair of equations is x + 2 y = 5 and 3 x + k y +15 = 0 has
a unique solution.
2. Find c if the system of equations c x + 3 y + (3 - c )= 0 and 12 x + c y – c = 0 has infinitely
many solutions.
3. Solve for x & y using substitution method:
x + 2 y – 3 = 0 and 3 x – 2 y + 7 =0
4. ABCD is a rectangle where AB = 30 cm, BC = ( x – y ) cm, CD = (x + y )cm & DA = 14 cm.
Find the values of x and y.
5. Solve for x and y for the method of elimination:
4 x – 3 y = 1 ; 5 x – 7 y = - 2.
Three-marks questions:
1. Solve the following pair of linear equations for x and y :
2 ( ax – by ) + ( a + 4b ) = 0 & 2 (b x + ay) + ( b - 4a ) = 0.
x y x y
2. Solve: a + b = a + b & 2 + 2 = 2
a b
3. ABCDE is a pentagon with BE ǁ CD, BC ǁ DE. BC is perpendicular to CD. AB = 3cm, BC =
( x – y) cm , CD = (x + y) cm, AE = 3 cm and BE = 5 cm. If the perimeter of ABCDE is 21cm,
find the value of x & y.
4. Find the four angles of a cyclic quadrilateral ABCD in which A = ( 2x – 1 )°, B = ( y + 5 )°,
C =( 2 y + 15 )° & D = ( 4 x – 7 )°.
5. A man travels 600 km partly by train and partly by car. If he covers 400 km by train and
rest by car, it takes him six hours and thirty minutes. But if he travels 200 km by train and
rest by car, he takes half an hour longer. Find the speed of the train and that of the car.
Five-mark questions:
1. On selling a tea set at 5% loss & a lemon set at 15% gain, a crockery seller gains Rs. 7. If
he sells the tea set at 5% gain and lemon set at 10% gain, he gains Rs. 15. Find the actual
price of the tea set and the lemon set.
2. There are two examination halls A & B. If 10 candidates are sent from room A to B, the
number of students in each room is same. If 20 candidates are sent from B to A, the
number of students in A is double the number of students in B. Find the number of
students in each room.
3. A two-digit number is obtained by either multiplying the sum of the digits by 8 and then
subtracting 5 or by multiplying the difference of the digits by 16 and adding 3. Find the
number.
4. The expenses of a lunch are partly constant and partly proportional to the number of
guests. The expenses amount to Rs. 65 for 7 guests and Rs. 97 for 11 guests. How much
the expenses for 18 guests will amount to?
5. If from twice the greater of the two positive numbers 16 is subtracted, the result is half
of the other number. If from half the greater number 1 is subtracted, the result is still
half the other number. What are the numbers?.
Four-mark questions (CASE STUDY BASED):
1. It is common that governments revise travel fares from time to time based on various
factors such as inflation (a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of
money) on different types of vehicles like auto, Rickshaws, taxis, radio cabs, etc. The
auto charges in a city comprise of a fixed charge together with the charge for the
distance covered. Study the following situations :
Situation 1: In city A, for a journey of 10km, the charge paid is Rs.75 and for a journey of 15km,
the charge paid is Rs.110.
Situation 2: In a city B, for a journey of 8km, the charge paid is rs.91 and for a journey of 14km,
the charge paid is Rs.145.
Answer the following:
i. If the fixed charges of auto rickshaw be Rs. x and the running charges be Rs. y Km/hr,
give the pair of linear equations representing the situation 1 .
ii. What is the amount a person has to pay if he travels 50 km.
iii. Draw the graph of lines representing the conditions in situation 1
OR
Draw the graph of lines representing the conditions in situation 2
2. Amit is planning to buy a house and the layout is given below, The design and the
measurement has been made such that areas of two bedrooms and kitchen together is
95 square meter.
Based on the above information, answer the following:
i. Form the pair of linear equations in two variables from this situation.
ii. Find the length of the outer boundary of the layout
iii. Find the area of each bedroom and kitchen in the layout.
OR
Find the cost of laying tiles in the kitchen at the rate of Rs. 50 per square meter.
