NORTH-EASTERN
EASTERN HILLS OR PURVANCHAL
The Purvanchal Ranges are the sub sub-Himalayan
Himalayan Ranges extending into the north-eastern
north part of
India. The nomenclature of mountain ranges in north
north-east
east are generally associated with the
local tribes inhabiting in the particular region.
The Himalayas curve steeply southward beyond the Diba Dibang
ng canyon, forming the Eastern
highlands or Purvanchal.
List of Hills and Mountains in the north
north-eastern region
ARUNACHAL PRADESH
a. Mishmi Hills- These hills are located at the confluence of the Northeastern Himalaya and
the Indo-Burma mountains.
b. Abor hills- These hills are located in India’s far north
north-east
east near the Chinese boder. The hills
are bounded by the Mishmi and Miri hills.
c. Miri hills- The term Miri was given by the British to distinguish between the Plain Miri of
Assam and the Nyishi of Arunachal Pradesh. The are located in Upper Subansiri and Kamle
district.
d. Dafla hills- It is located to the north of Tezpur and North Lakhimpur, bounded by Aka hills
on the west and the Abor hills on the east.
Note- Mount Kangto (7090m) also known as Kanggardo Rize is the highest peak in
Arunachal Pradesh located in East Kameng district.
MEGHALAYA
a. Garo hills- It is located at the western part of the Meghalaya Plateau. The highest peak of
Garo hills is the Nokrek hills (1515m).
b. Khasi hills- It lies in the central part of Meghalaya plateau. The city of Shillong, Cherapunji,
Mawsynram etc are located here. The highest peak is Lum Shyllong (1968 m).
c. Jaintia hills- It lies in the eastern part of the Meghalaya Plateau.
Lum Maryngksih is the highest peak of the Jaintia hills.
Krem Liat Prah is the longest natural cave in India located in Shnongrim ridge of Jaintia
hills.
PATKAI BUM HILLS- It is located on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
NAGA HILLS- The southern extension of Patkai Bum in Nagaland is known as Naga Hills.
Mount Saramati is the highest peak of Naga hills.
BARAIL HILLS- It is located on the Assam-Nagaland border. It is very righ in bamboo and pine
trees.
LAIMATOL HILLS AND MANIPUR HILLS- The two hills are parallel to each other. Manipur
hills in the east and Laimatol hills in the west. Both the hills form a valley where the famous
Loktak lake is situated.
MIZO/LUSHAI HILL- It is the main hills of Mizoram. The highest peak of the Mizo hills is the
Phawngpui mountain which is also known as Blue mountain (2157m).
The Dampa Tiger Reserve (1994) is situated in Lushai hills.
TRIPURA HILLS- It is situated in the eastern side of the Tripura state and the highest peak is
the Betlingchip.
MIKIR HILLS- It is situated to the south of Kaziranga National Park lying between Nagaon &
Golaghat. It is an extension of the Meghalaya plateau. Jhum cultivation is practiced here.
The highest peak of Mikir hills is Dambuchko.
