IBPS-C (English Language) Set 22_T1_03

The passage given below contains few words or phrases highlighted. Read the given pas-
sage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

From consumer goods, electronic items, transportation vehicles to exhibi-

tions, web page and environment, designing has become an feature of
industries. Earlier Japanese, Korean, Swiss or Italian designs were copied but ingress
of MNCs in a big way posed a problem to the growth and development of indigenous
industries. When faced with charges of plagiarism, the corporate sector woke up to the
necessity of industrial designing. For survival, a keen sense of competition with MNCs
has grown and the quality of Indian products has improved.
Industrial design is an upcoming field with vast scope and opportunities. “Industrial
design is an intellectual property like copy right or patenting”, Markets are opening up
with a scope for expansion. In US there are more than 150 universities having courses in
Industrial design whereas in India we have just four to six institutes with design courses
concentrating more on interior decoration with furniture design or in advertising sec-
tor. But presently design has gained importance as an essential part of corporate world
creating a huge demand for professional designers. Consumer awareness has created
necessary demand for original, creative, innovative, aesthetic, and functional designs for
varied economic segments, Indian climate and ethos. Indian industrial designers are cre-
ating designs for both foreign and indigenous markets.
If technology is applied in science, industrial designing is the applied form of technol-
ogy. The availability of many engineering departments enables the students to utilize
modern scientific & technological knowhow. Doctorate program on industrial design is
in the pipeline. What is a product designer? All mixies, ball pens, TV sets, fridges
etc have the same technology, what differentiates one brand from the other is the form,
shape, texture, and colour. The Product designer conceptualizes the design, goes into
minute details and intricacies of the product. After a lot of research on the target mar-
ket share for which segment how much time is required, pricing etc. he designs the
product keeping in mind the human angle, economics, aesthetics etc. The work is cre-
ative and interesting. Architects specializing in Industrial design are engaged in public
service-oriented projects, creation of proper and effective use of space and organization.
