Tia Simmons

Professor Green

English 102

October 24th,2024

I was going to interview my friend April, but she had a family emergency. But I was able to get

my friend in England to do it with me. At first, I was shy or timid about asking these questions

because I didn’t want to cross a line and get too personal but overall, it went well.

I have known England for a few months, but he has known my family for years now. I proceeded

to ask England if he has been or has, he known anyone to ever be in solitary confinement and to

my amazement he told me that he himself has been there. Only for about a week but that still

counts in my book. He told me how cold it is in there and you are isolated to yourself with no

one at all to talk to. You can lose yourself in there and not be able to any longer know the date

and time. If you are not strong minded that place for sure will break you.

I asked him to tell me about any lasting effects solitary confinement has on a person that’s been

their long term. Of course, he believes being in solitary confinement even for a short period of

time can leave you sensitive to noise, you can no longer be social with others. That place is

meant to break you and if you are weak minded it will.

He doesn’t think that Washington state or any state will get rid of solitary confinement. Its to

easy for them to throw someone in the secluded cell and forget about them and not have to deal
with the problem. We both don’t know what a more suitable punishment for the inmates that

would get unruly or out of order be, but we both feel solitary confinement is not the answer.

He just as I was not aware until now that when a child is charged as an adult and they go to

prison, they most times are thrown in solitary confinement/ They say it is for their safety. But

how is losing your mind and going crazy all alone keeping anyone safe? Wy are children put in

adult prisons anyway to begin with.

They are supposed to be reforming these inmates and making them better citizens for when they

reenter the world. But instead, they are taking the cheap and easy way out and throwing them in

a cell and leaving them sometimes for years. They leave them to die or just kill themselves. We

agreed on the fact that solitary confinement is to break someone down and make then go crazy. If

they really wanted to help inmates, they would investigate their mental health. Who gives them

the right to play God and get away with it, \Which is what they are doing when they are

knowingly throwing people in a place that messes them up mentally and makes then kill

themselves. They just don’t have to own up to their part in it.

They should be in jail or solitary confinement. (Edmondson)
