Founded in 1404, the University of Turin is one of the oldest and most prestigious Italian universities: protagonists
of the 20th century such as Antonio Gramsci, Piero Gobetti, Norberto Bobbio, Cesare Pavese, Primo Levi, Umberto

University Library System


The University Library System is divided into 6 Poles, very different from each other in size, collections and
organization, which are responsible for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the cultural heritage and
the organization of services for the community.
Some realities are monolibraries: Agriculture and Veterinary Science (in Grugliasco), Management and Economics,
Medicine (with 4 book points in Turin and 1 at the Orbassano Hospital).
The Polo del Campus Einaudi includes the Norberto Bobbio Library and the University of Cuneo; Human Sciences
brings together 11 libraries and 1 media library; Sciences of Nature has 10 scientific area libraries.

In this variety of knowledge, libraries develop, preserve and enhance the heritage, paper and digital, current and
historical, provide services to the public in support of teaching and

to degree theses, on paper until 2018. The services are: consultation of bibliographic material and magazines
displayed on open shelves; photocopies; loan of monographic and interlibrary material; document delivery. The
Library is a loan point of the Ente Right to Study and has an outdoor green area, covered by wifi and equipped with
tables and benches.

Economics and Management Library The


Economics and Management Library is a point of reference for the scientific and student community present on the
“Poveri Vecchi” campus. It has a heritage of over 280,000 volumes. The services, both face-to-face and remote, are
aimed at institutional users and the local area. Significant participation in disciplinary and territorial cooperative
projects and attention to the promotion of sustainable development issues through social channels. Among the
valuable funds, that of the economist Giuseppe Prato, the subject of a digitization project.

Federated Library of Medicine - Polo Molinette


The site is equipped with a reading room for consulting bibliographic material and with a reception desk to respond
to the study and research needs of users (students, postgraduates, researchers, teachers). It has a part equipped

Polo Campus Luigi Einaudi – Bibl. Norberto Bobbio The


library is housed in the Luigi Einaudi Campus designed by the archistar Norman Foster and occupies 4 four floors
and 3 bodies for a total of approx. 10,000 m2. The heritage of 600,000 volumes is placed entirely on open shelves,
with the exception of ancient and rare material conserved in rooms with controlled temperature and humidity; There

exhibitions, the digitization of valuable funds.
Current events and those of the recent past have made it clear that there are contexts (pandemic), situations (wars)
and difficulties (movement; visual; use of bibliographic catalogues) which prevent many people from physically
accessing volumes and sources of knowledge and which can even lead to dangers for the conservation and
integrity of the same.
To cope with these worrying scenarios, libraries intend to maximize the actions aimed at expanding and diversifying
the methods of access to the bibliographic heritage, while at the same time taking care of its conservation for future
generations (also in digital format) with the aim of guaranteeing university community, studios*, citizens* and
schools an unrestricted access: by the weather (opening hours); from space (inability to move); by barriers
(architectural and physical); the knowledge and/or availability of information channels.

More than 81,700 male and female students refer to the 6 library hubs, with very different numbers

The staff of the University of Turin is made up of more than 4,000 people: university professors;
researchers; laboratory technicians and support personnel.
All these figures guarantee in various ways the progress of knowledge in all its forms and to do
so they need to be able to access reliable, updated and quickly consultable documentary sources.

Thanks to the "Agreement for the reciprocity of library services" also students of the Turin
Polytechnic (36,000) have access to all UniTO services; from the University of Eastern Piedmont
(15,000); of the University of Valle d'Aosta (1,000) and of the University of Gastronomic Sciences

All the specific objectives listed below contribute, at different levels and each with its own specificities and nuances,

the other projects pertaining to it. The perspective underlying this coordination is that of concentration of efforts
and synergistic work on the territory, aimed at maximum attention to the recipients and the achievement of common
strategic objectives which, in this case, appear to be the following (taken from the Agenda 2030 and included in the

Turin libraries with a view to the common good. Making the digitized volumes available on the

Related to this objective are also the citizen education activities included in the project which aim

Agenda (public health, issues related to physical and psychological well-being, sustainable

process, they will have to open up more and more to the territory, becoming real community

In order to ensure the achievement of the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda, the libraries of the
University of Turin intend to operate with specific actions, with the aim of: -
enhancing their bibliographic heritage with a view to the common good
- spreading knowledge of this heritage , guaranteeing greater access to the same -
guaranteeing their conservation for the benefit of future
generations - sensitizing citizens to the value and importance of cultural heritage
and knowledge - increasing accessibility to collections, through new tools.

The aims of this set of actions can be traced back to three distinct aspects: - teaching

of culture, the collaboration with the University Institute of European Studies (IUSE) was included
in this project in order to provide the volunteers with the tools to autonomously identify examples
and good practices for the promotion of knowledge in Europe.

To facilitate the presentation of the activities necessary to achieve the objectives, we report for
each specific objective the details of the activities carried out in the implementation of the project,
organized by macro-titles called MACROACTIONS.

MACROACTION 1: DIGITIZATION AND CONSERVATION OF BIBLIOGRAPHICAL HERITAGE


The bibliographic heritage, especially the ancient one, is rare and fragile and risks being damaged

objectives: the volunteers will be involved in the meetings of the project team for the analysis of the
heritage already digitized and the requests received from users in order to determine the necessary
steps for the implementation of the available resources. In particular, a priority scale will be defined
for the choice of texts to be digitised, which takes into consideration the need to safeguard the works;
user requests; completeness and coherence of digitized collections.

2 - Digitization and related operations: under the supervision of the library staff, the volunteers will
have to proceed with the identification of the physical location of the texts, reporting any anomalies in
the location of the same and, following the verification of the state of conservation, operate the
digitization with a scanner of the entire work, with particular attention to maintaining the integrity of
the same.
3 – Archiving and legibility of texts: the digitization process, especially in the case of ancient
manuscripts and books, must be completed by a correct optical character recognition activity, to
identify any errors in the dedicated software. Once the correspondence of the digitized work to the
original has been verified, it is necessary to organize, archive and index the resulting files. Fundamental
for the correct placement and identification of the work is the choice of metadata to be combined, i.e.
the identification of keywords that frame the content of a document and the information contained
therein.
4 – Promotion of knowledge of the works: in order to be easily identified by users, the texts must be
uploaded to digital library platforms, which must be chosen on the basis of consistency with the
contents of the work (e.g. theme, author, current of thought, historical period, etc.) and for the
possibility of widespread access that they guarantee. The objective of fruition of the work can be said
to be fully achieved only at the end of an adequate communication activity that manages to reach a
plurality of users.

the scheduling of the activities that already involve the University. The contribution of
volunteers to the management of programming is therefore fundamental to avoid overlapping

3 - Event planning - the events to be created are very different from each other as they include
exclusively digital activities, such as information pills or online courses for high schools,
which are accompanied by purely face-to-face initiatives, such as guided visits to historical
heritage . These profound differences lead to the need for particular attention in the activities
connected with the design which will have to take into consideration and vary according to:
the preferences of the specific user; the type of vehicle used; the ways in which the accesses
will take place and other variables, in order to identify the best implementation standards.

4 - Implementation and promotion - if the phase of finding and collecting the information
material from which to start can be considered common (search for texts and bibliographies;
analysis of materials; involvement of experts; definition of the contents of the activity; etc.),
the methods implementation are instead very different as they depend on the choice of the
instrument used for dissemination. In the case of online events it will be necessary to provide
for the creation of digital material (documents; videos; films), to evaluate how to manage
participations and any registration forms, the analysis of satisfaction and the tools to be used
for promotion; in the case of face-to-face events, the material to be created could have
different characteristics with respect to the duration or digital formats to be used. Similarly,
in the case of the public in presence, particular attention must be paid to the collection and
management of registrations, limited by the capacity of the premises used; the management
of the interaction as regards the debates will then be fundamental (management of priorities

who, for various reasons, have had relations with the University of Turin (as students, teachers
or researchers) or who have left their own libraries in the custody documents and book collections.
Of each personality the volunteers will have to acquire the data already present on the free
encyclopaedia, the links and the sources of information cited.
3 - Analysis of the documentation held by the University - in collaboration with the project group,
the volunteers will carry out a census of the resources present in the libraries and connected to
the identified personalities. These searches will be diversified according to the historical period
and the profession of each figure: ancient manuscripts and texts for Erasmus of Rotterdam;
books, newspaper articles, lecture recordings and images in the case of Prof. Norberto Bobbio.
4 - Choice of materials to publish - under the guidance of experts, the volunteers will collaborate
in the systematization of the documentary material and texts chosen for the implementation of
the pages of the free encyclopedia. Alongside the simple publication of contents, the aim of the
activities is to provide citizens with the possibility of using in-depth courses thanks to the creation
of concept maps and the insertion of links to bibliographic and documentary resources (videos
and images) of the libraries of the University of Turin.
5 – Promotion and dissemination – the free encyclopaedia is in itself widely consulted, but the
information verification activity and the implementation of new tools (concept maps) put in place
by libraries will have a particular value for teachers of schools of all types and levels. In order for
the action to be effective, a communication campaign will be carried out through social media to
library users and the general public, but this will be accompanied by a more targeted intervention

offered by university libraries; however, this awareness is not so widespread among external users

volunteers will therefore be aimed in particular at identifying the best ways to reach the various segments
of the public (e.g. sharing information and events with the social pages of the schools). Particular attention
must be paid to the study of the information channels that are more effective in reaching and involving
citizens, with the aim of increasing external access to bibliographic resources.

actions to improve online services or involve them in identifying topics of general interest
that libraries could deal with during the events held in favor of citizenship .
