With over 81,000 students and 4,000 employees, it forms an ecosystem made up of seven large poles divided into
27 Departments and more than 100 offices throughout the region.
It boasts a wide educational offer: over 150 study courses in the economic, legal and political, social, humanistic,
scientific and health areas; 38 research doctorates and more than 110 masters.
UniTo is aware of its role in the local community, it promotes the transfer of knowledge to citizens* and businesses
in the areas: health, cultural heritage; agrifood, circular & bioeconomy, energy and the environment, mobility and
transport, smart technologies.
The University is committed to issues of economic, social, environmental and economic sustainability and pays
particular attention to the inclusion of students, through policies to support the right to study, initiatives for people
with disabilities and learning disabilities and the promotion of activities for refugees and detained students.
The UniTo community has 22 libraries located in different municipalities (Turin, Cuneo, Savigliano, Grugliasco,
Orbassano) with around 2.9 million paper books, thousands of digital resources and full access to the Internet.
In this variety of knowledge, libraries develop, preserve and enhance the heritage, paper and digital, current and
historical, provide services to the public in support of teaching and

Polo Sciences of Nature - Bibl. “Kiesow” – Dept. of Psychology and Bibl. Earth Sciences The

As far as the specificities of this project are concerned, the general objective to which this is finalized is that of
guaranteeing ever wider, inclusive and aware access to quality information resources, through the creation of two
paths: the digitization and dissemination of the scientific knowledge.

Digitization makes it possible to enhance and raise awareness of the heritage of the University of
Turin libraries with a view to the common good. Making the digitized volumes available on the
web will also be the basis for carrying out Public Engagement activities aimed at making the
digitized collections known, but also at educating citizens about the value of cultural heritage and
libraries and their collections, in general, promoting accessibility to quality sources.
Related to this objective are also the citizen education activities included in the project which aim
to develop topical issues of public interest and digital "information pills" on subjects on which
there is a widespread need for authoritative information and a growing interest on the part of the
ordinary citizen first of all the issues related to the sustainable development goals of the 2030
Agenda (public health, issues related to physical and psychological well-being, sustainable
development, climate change, active citizenship, copyright, etc.) .
The sources supporting this activity are the book heritage of the University libraries.
Through the provision of digital and digitized sources, Public Engagement and citizen education
activities , the project intends to contribute to achieving objectives 4 and 10 of the UN Agenda
2030, in order to reduce inequalities, - provide a quality education and a learning opportunity for
all.
The “Navigare tra i libri” project will also contribute to ob. 11 and 16, on the basis of the common
thread that links all the projects of the PARTICIPIACE program, ie that cultural empowerment can
be the winning tool to catalyze participation and inclusion in the territories.
Libraries (civic ones but also those of the University of Turin) will be the protagonists of this
process, they will have to open up more and more to the territory, becoming real community
centers and cultural hubs of communities, within which all and all can access to the rights of
citizenship and knowledge.
The activities envisaged by the project will respond to the overall needs and challenges assumed
by the PARTICIPATE program and described in point 3 of the same, in particular:

6. Activities with relative timing, role of volunteer operators and other resources employed in the

6.1 Set of activities envisaged for achieving the objective (*)
In order to ensure the achievement of the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda, the libraries of the
University of Turin intend to operate with specific actions, with the aim of: -
enhancing their bibliographic heritage with a view to the common good
- spreading knowledge of this heritage , guaranteeing greater access to the same -
guaranteeing their conservation for the benefit of future
generations - sensitizing citizens to the value and importance of cultural heritage
and knowledge - increasing accessibility to collections, through new tools.
The aims of this set of actions can be traced back to three distinct aspects: - teaching
and the right to study - guaranteeing the availability of texts to all studios and students, whatever
their social condition or their physical distance - training and education -
with the promotion among citizens of the importance of sources of knowledge and citizen education
activities - protection and conservation
- to ensure widespread access also to the ancient book heritage and valuable collections, which
belonged to studios* and cultural personalities, also to future generations.
With reference to the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda and the importance of the dissemination
of culture, the collaboration with the University Institute of European Studies (IUSE) was included
in this project in order to provide the volunteers with the tools to autonomously identify examples
and good practices for the promotion of knowledge in Europe.
To facilitate the presentation of the activities necessary to achieve the objectives, we report for
each specific objective the details of the activities carried out in the implementation of the project,
organized by macro-titles called MACROACTIONS.

the context and
objectives: the volunteers will be involved in the meetings of the project team for the analysis of the
heritage already digitized and the requests received from users in order to determine the necessary
steps for the implementation of the available resources. In particular, a priority scale will be defined
for the choice of texts to be digitised, which takes into consideration the need to safeguard the works;
user requests; completeness and coherence of digitized collections.
2 - Digitization and related operations: under the supervision of the library staff, the volunteers will
have to proceed with the identification of the physical location of the texts, reporting any anomalies in
the location of the same and, following the verification of the state of conservation, operate the
digitization with a scanner of the entire work, with particular attention to maintaining the integrity of
the same.
3 – Archiving and legibility of texts: the digitization process, especially in the case of ancient
manuscripts and books, must be completed by a correct optical character recognition activity, to
identify any errors in the dedicated software. Once the correspondence of the digitized work to the
original has been verified, it is necessary to organize, archive and index the resulting files. Fundamental
for the correct placement and identification of the work is the choice of metadata to be combined, i.e.
the identification of keywords that frame the content of a document and the information contained
therein.
4 – Promotion of knowledge of the works: in order to be easily identified by users, the texts must be
uploaded to digital library platforms, which must be chosen on the basis of consistency with the
contents of the work (e.g. theme, author, current of thought, historical period, etc.) and for the
possibility of widespread access that they guarantee. The objective of fruition of the work can be said
to be fully achieved only at the end of an adequate communication activity that manages to reach a
plurality of users.

Planned
activities 1 – Evaluation of previous initiatives outcomes - to carry out a programming of the
interventions consistent with the initiatives already in progress, the volunteers will support
the project group in the creation of reports on the activities carried out and in progress. Since
each library has its own specificity and organizes activities aimed at the sector public, it will
be necessary to prepare analysis documents which give evidence of the dissemination carried
out in a shared way and of the targeted one. The assessment of the strengths and weaknesses
encountered and the analysis of user comments will allow for a better profiling of the activities to be plan
2 – Planning of events – the University of Turin is involved every year in multiple dissemination
activities carried out in conjunction with other institutions and on pre-set dates (e.g.
Researchers' night; FAI days; memorial day; anti-discrimination initiatives; etc.). The
programming of the interventions to be carried out by the individual libraries cannot disregard
the scheduling of the activities that already involve the University. The contribution of
volunteers to the management of programming is therefore fundamental to avoid overlapping
of initiatives.
3 - Event planning - the events to be created are very different from each other as they include
exclusively digital activities, such as information pills or online courses for high schools,
which are accompanied by purely face-to-face initiatives, such as guided visits to historical
heritage . These profound differences lead to the need for particular attention in the activities
connected with the design which will have to take into consideration and vary according to:
the preferences of the specific user; the type of vehicle used; the ways in which the accesses
will take place and other variables, in order to identify the best implementation standards.
4 - Implementation and promotion - if the phase of finding and collecting the information
material from which to start can be considered common (search for texts and bibliographies;
analysis of materials; involvement of experts; definition of the contents of the activity; etc.),
the methods implementation are instead very different as they depend on the choice of the
instrument used for dissemination. In the case of online events it will be necessary to provide
for the creation of digital material (documents; videos; films), to evaluate how to manage
participations and any registration forms, the analysis of satisfaction and the tools to be used
for promotion; in the case of face-to-face events, the material to be created could have
different characteristics with respect to the duration or digital formats to be used. Similarly,
in the case of the public in presence, particular attention must be paid to the collection and
management of registrations, limited by the capacity of the premises used; the management
of the interaction as regards the debates will then be fundamental (management of priorities
and question times; microphones; etc.) and the evaluation of the approval of the initiative (paper question
5 - Analysis of the results - the support of the volunteers will be essential for the project team
in the phase of evaluating the results of the proposed initiatives. This activity will not be
limited only to the creation of event reports (number of participants; social interaction;
satisfaction), but aims to be a new way of opening up to the public to encourage interaction
between university libraries and the local area/citizens through the creation of networks (e.g.
schools) or interest groups (citizens) for the development of issues that have social value.
By way of example, in 2021 the Library of Economics and Management provided 2 courses on
awareness-raising topics: "What libraries are for, what librarians do" and "The library for
sustainable development" in favor of high school students Scientific Alfieri and the Avogadro
Technical Institute of Turin and has joined the Festival on Sustainable Development.

In the same year, 65 guided tours were organized at the Graf Historical Library, open to citizens,
while the Kiesow Library organized the XIII edition of the Psicologia Film Festival.
2 - Study and documentation phase - first of all it will be necessary to draw up a list of personalities
who, for various reasons, have had relations with the University of Turin (as students, teachers
or researchers) or who have left their own libraries in the custody documents and book collections.
Of each personality the volunteers will have to acquire the data already present on the free
encyclopaedia, the links and the sources of information cited.
3 - Analysis of the documentation held by the University - in collaboration with the project group,
the volunteers will carry out a census of the resources present in the libraries and connected to
the identified personalities. These searches will be diversified according to the historical period
and the profession of each figure: ancient manuscripts and texts for Erasmus of Rotterdam;
books, newspaper articles, lecture recordings and images in the case of Prof. Norberto Bobbio.
4 - Choice of materials to publish - under the guidance of experts, the volunteers will collaborate
in the systematization of the documentary material and texts chosen for the implementation of
the pages of the free encyclopedia. Alongside the simple publication of contents, the aim of the
activities is to provide citizens with the possibility of using in-depth courses thanks to the creation
of concept maps and the insertion of links to bibliographic and documentary resources (videos
and images) of the libraries of the University of Turin.
5 – Promotion and dissemination – the free encyclopaedia is in itself widely consulted, but the
information verification activity and the implementation of new tools (concept maps) put in place
by libraries will have a particular value for teachers of schools of all types and levels. In order for
the action to be effective, a communication campaign will be carried out through social media to
library users and the general public, but this will be accompanied by a more targeted intervention
aimed at schools and cultural institutions, local and non-local. In particular, the volunteers will be
responsible for monitoring access to the pages created on wikipedia and

wikidata; to the resources connected to them and the identification of any requests and/or comments from
users.

reflection in which the strengths and weaknesses of the different experiences will be analysed, in order to
be able to implement development lines and shared objectives. The benchmarking activity will then be
fundamental for the identification of good practices in the management of digital communication of other
Italian and European institutions.
2 - Implementation of the social pages - also in this case the activities to be implemented in the various
offices depend on the degree of development of the social communication already in place. It is possible
that in one library we have to deal with the stylistic choices for the graphic creation of the pages and with
the related promotional activities, while in another we already have the tool available with thousands of
followers and we must therefore proceed to carefully monitor the comments on the posts and any requests
for further information.
3 - Involvement of external users - Students and staff of local universities are aware of the main services
offered by university libraries; however, this awareness is not so widespread among external users
(schools and teachers; other social realities; institutions and businesses; citizens). The activity of the
volunteers will therefore be aimed in particular at identifying the best ways to reach the various segments
of the public (e.g. sharing information and events with the social pages of the schools). Particular attention
must be paid to the study of the information channels that are more effective in reaching and involving
citizens, with the aim of increasing external access to bibliographic resources.
Through the activities listed below it is believed to be able to identify the obstacles to the use of resources
and find process solutions shared with the users.

4 – Involvement of users – improvement actions will be accompanied by constant interaction
with users in order to test their effectiveness. In particular, it will be necessary to design
online survey tools with the aim of verifying the validity of the communication aimed at
promoting knowledge of the heritage and the methods of accessing it. These surveys, carried
out among users, must necessarily be accompanied by an analysis and evaluation of the
effectiveness of the networks used to convey the information. This aspect could be verified
by monitoring the relevance that the various school websites, cultural bodies and institutions,
mailing lists and social pages of the University have attributed to communication. In terms
of improving services, one could also think about the creation of user panels to test the
actions to improve online services or involve them in identifying topics of general interest
that libraries could deal with during the events held in favor of citizenship .
SYSTEM MACROACTION
Specific reference objective: As
described in point 2 of the Programme, the voluntary operators and the reception bodies will
be involved in a process of Meeting/Confrontation aimed at building an organic and overall
vision and feeling fully involved in the Program to which this project is a part, directing the
single activities and experiences towards the assumption of the general objectives and
favoring the co-construction of "new" readings and shared meanings in relation to the needs
and challenges that characterize the Program itself.
Furthermore, with the aim of promoting the achievement of the goals of the Civil Service
(experience that must contribute to the "civic, social, cultural and professional training of
young people"), the project is also developed according to the following 5 macro-actions (system and tr

• EXPERIENCE ACCOMPANYING PATH: In order to guarantee the good level of satisfaction of the volunteers for
their participation in the Universal Civil Service experience, as well as to accompany and support them in the
realization of the project, the City of Turin carries out throughout the specific paths to accompany the experience.
A reference figure external to the reception institution is envisaged (staff under contract with the City of Turin),
who in addition to being a classroom tutor during general training meetings, plays a support role in the
implementation of the civil service and facilitator in the resolution of any problems that may arise.
• MONITORING: During the twelve months of project implementation, the proposing body and the implementation
site, in order to collect useful elements for the possible ongoing redesign of the experience, prepare and implement
specific monitoring interventions, having as focus the completed project. Among the planned activities: monitoring
meetings aimed at the PLOs managed by the Civil Service Office of the City of Turin; administration of specific
evaluation questionnaires; implementation of "proximity monitoring" meetings at the single implementation site,
in the presence of OLPs and volunteers.
• WORK TUTORAGE: Volunteers participate in a path (with group and individual sessions) described in point 21,
aimed at facilitating entry into the world of work and useful for the purpose of validating and certifying skills,
issued and signed by the Third party body "ORSo Social Cooperative".
