Calculate the laplace transform of the function f(t)=t 2 using the definition of laplace transform

Ans:

𝑓(𝑡) = 𝑡

𝐿{𝑡 } = 𝑒 𝑡

lim 𝑡 .𝑒 𝑑𝑡

3
We can use integration by part

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑢 = 𝑡

𝑑𝑢 = 2𝑡 𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑣 = 𝑒

𝑒
𝑣=
−𝑠
Using the formula for integration by parts

𝑢 𝑑𝑣 = 𝑢𝑣 − 𝑣 𝑑𝑢

We have

𝑡 .𝑒 ∞ 2
𝑙{𝑡 } = − + 𝑡. 𝑒 𝑑𝑡
𝑠 0 𝑠

Using by part int again, we have

𝑢=𝑡

𝑑𝑢 = 𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑣 = 𝑒

Verify Rolle ’s Theorem for the function f(x) = x4-8x on the interval [0, 2] and conclude

Ans:

To verify Rolle ’s Theorem we need to check 3 conditions

 f(x) is continuous at the closed interval [0, 2]

 f(x) is differentiable on the open interval [0, 2]
 f(0) = f(2)

Test 1;

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 8𝑥 Is a polynomial, hence it is continuous

Test 2;

𝑓 | (𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 8

Test 3;

Using 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 8𝑥 sub. (0, 2) we have,

𝑓(0) = 0 − 8(0)

𝑓(0) = 0

𝑓(2) = 2 − 8(2)

𝑓(2) = 0

Since 𝑓(2) = 𝑓(0) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 all the above conditions are satisfied, there exists at least one value <
in the open interval (0, 2) such That:

𝑓 | (𝑐) = 0

This implies that,

𝑓 | (𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 8 = 0

4𝑥 = 8

𝑥 = √2

𝑐 = √2

4)

Find the taylor series expansion about x = 0 of the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒

Ans;

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒

Taylor series formula

𝑓(𝑎)(𝑥̇ − 𝑎) 𝑓(𝑎)(𝑥̈ − 𝑎) f(a)(𝑥 − 𝑎)

f(x) = 𝑓(𝑎) + + + +⋯ , −∞ < 𝑥 < ∞
1! 2! 3!

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒

̇ = −2𝑥. 𝑒
𝑓(𝑥) using product rule

̈ =𝑒
𝑓(𝑥) . (4𝑥 − 2)

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 (12𝑥 + 8𝑥 )

When x=0

̇ = −2(0). 𝑒
𝑓(0)

̈ =𝑒
𝑓(0) . (4(0) − 2)
( )
𝑓(0) = 𝑒 (12(0) + 8(0) )

Substituting in the formula we get,

(−2𝑥. 𝑒 )(𝑥 − 𝑎) (𝑒
. (4(0) − 2))(𝑥 − 𝑎)
f(x) = 𝑒 + +

( )
(𝑒 (12(0) + 8(0) )(𝑥 − 𝑎)
