Ford Motor Company – London
Senior Electrical Design Engineer (April 2016 – December 2017) - 2 years
Yazaki harness design engineer working on the Ford Transit programme. In this role I used Catia V5, Teamcentre and VisMockup to
manage and design the entirety of the underbody and engine bay harnessing for present and future Ford Transit vehicles. This involved
completing the harness drawings, stating taping method, splice locations, protective coverings and tolerances, taking into account the
environment in which the harness is routed for the best possible design. Additionally, I would design sheet metal and injection moulded
components (brackets and channels) to ensure best possible routing ensuring required clearances. I received praise for reducing costs by
eliminating unnecessary harness components and optimising design. In this role I spent time in the harness manufacturing facility in
Manila in order to ensure the new harnesses were manufactured correctly. I also visited the assembly plants in Istanbul and Detroit to
ensure the designs worked in vehicle and that the assembly process was as smooth as possible, producing design updates if necessary.

Project Engineer: I was responsible for ensuring components were released on time, this involved
raising ECR’s for components which needed updating then activating ECN’s and ensuring these went through effectively. Further activities
included writing test specifications, creating workbooks for many electrical systems, DFMEA, hosting meetings with multinational
suppliers, presenting on which components will be involved in the vehicle and planning and conducting testing for electrical components. I
negotiated with suppliers for sample parts and organised developmental test software to be delivered to McLaren for specialised testing.
This project involved both working remotely, on-site visits and trips to testing centres in Silverstone.
Design Engineer: Responsible for the majority of the electrical systems throughout the design and release phase, involving designing
brackets, completing/releasing drawings, completing assembly files / assigning torques (Software used: Enovia / CATIA). I was involved in
the design process for switches, door control system, alarm systems, vehicle ECU systems, keyless entry system, antennas, parking
sensors, speakers, infotainment system, etc. This involved finding optimal locations in the vehicle through design studies for all electrical
components and collaborating with all appropriate parties both at McLaren and working with a diverse range of suppliers from across the
globe in order to agree location / materials before signing off on components. I was also tasked with overseeing all electrical systems
during vehicle virtual builds and subsequently resolving these build concerns in order to deliver electronic systems for the McLaren 720S.

Education
MSc Mechanical Engineering (with Distinction) 2011-2012 BEng Mechanical Engineering (with Honours) 2008-2011
In 2012 I achieved the accolade of finishing as top performer in the year for MSc in Mechanical Engineering. Modules on Design
Optimisation, CFD, Solid Prototyping, DFM and FEA have been essential for the career path I have since followed. Furthermore, modules of
Research and Project Management and Business of Manufacture have compounded a thorough grounding in business management.
Undergraduate Dissertation: 'Optimising a Weather-tight Door' working alongside external company ‘Renown Engineering’ to improve
their current stock of watertight doors and hatches. This was achieved via modifying the internal structure with a honeycomb material by
using experimental test rig data and implementing FEA analysis. This project helped me to understand design processes in the marine /
defence industry and is an area I have focused on since, with may industry design roles utilizing Solidworks or CATIA.
Postgraduate Dissertation: ‘Producing Reliable Aerodynamic Lookup Tables for Microtabs Installed on Wind Turbine Blades Made of S800
Series Aerofoils’. This involved analysing the effect of control surfaces in order to extend working life of wind turbines. During the course
of the project ICEM, Solidworks and FLUENT CFD software were used to predict deviations of lift and drag produced by the aerofoil under
the effect of microtabs of varying heights and positions. This analysis was compiled in collaboration with a (now published) PhD project.
