Precalculus Quarter 2 Lecture 6: Trigonometric Identities
Objectives:
At the end of the session, students must be able to:
a. Determine whether an equation is an Identity or a conditional equation.
b. Apply trigonometric identities to find other trigonometric values.
Identity Equation vs. Conditional Equation
Identity Equation - when the equation is true for every value of the variable
(domain).
Conditional Equation - when an equation is false for at least one value in the
domain.
Trigonometric Identities
➢ Sum and Difference Identities
cos(𝐴 − 𝐵) = cos 𝐴 cos 𝐵 + sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵
cos(𝐴 + 𝐵) = cos 𝐴 cos 𝐵 − sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵
sin(𝐴 + 𝐵) = sin 𝐴 cos 𝐵 + cos 𝐴 sin 𝐵
sin(𝐴 − 𝐵) = sin 𝐴 cos 𝐵 − cos 𝐴 sin 𝐵
tan 𝐴 + tan 𝐵
tan(𝐴 + 𝐵) =
1 − tan 𝐴 tan 𝐵
tan 𝐴 − tan 𝐵
tan(𝐴 − 𝐵) =
1 + tan 𝐴 tan 𝐵
➢ Cofunction Identities
𝜋
cos ( − 𝐵) = sin 𝐵
2
𝜋
sin ( − 𝐵) = cos 𝐵
2
𝜋
tan ( − 𝐵) = cot 𝐵

➢ Double Angle Identities
sin 2𝐴 = 2 sin 𝐴 cos 𝐴
cos 2𝐴 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴
cos 2𝐴 = 2𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴 − 1
cos 2𝐴 = 1 − 2𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴
2 tan 𝐴
tan 2𝐴 =
1 − 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝐴
➢ Half-Angle Identities
𝐴 1 + cos 𝐴
𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 ( ) =
2 2
𝐴 1 − cos 𝐴
𝑠𝑖𝑛2 ( ) =
2 2
𝐴 1 − cos 𝐴
tan =
2 sin 𝐴
𝐴
𝐴 sin 2
tan =
2 cos 𝐴

𝐴 sin 𝐴
tan =
2 1 + cos 𝐴
𝐴 1 − cos 𝐴
𝑡𝑎𝑛2 ( ) =
2 1 + cos 𝐴
