III- Comprehension
Read the passage and answer all of the questions.
A tropical rain forest is an amazing place. Thousands of
different kinds of plants and animals make their homes there.
Some are not found anywhere else in the world. If the rain
forests are not protected, some species of plants and animals
could disappear forever, taking their resources with them.
Scientists have known for a long time that medical cures can come from plants. The
rain forest is the perfect habitat for many diverse types of plants. They compete for space,
sunlight, water, and nutrients. The plants that survive are strong and hard. They also contain
many types of chemicals. These chemicals are part of the plants’ defence system. They can
help protect it from fungus, bacteria, insects, disease, and other threats.
Experts believe that some of these chemicals might be useful to human beings, too.
16
New Close Up – B1+ – Prep 2 – First Term

The native people of the rain forests have healers who help those who are sick. For
hundreds of years, they have known which leaves, roots, and berries can be used to treat
different illnesses.
Western scientists have begun working with these native healers. They learn about
different plants, cures, and treatments. Then, they can perform tests on the plants to see
what chemicals they contain and how they might be used. When they do find something
important, it goes through more and more tests. Lots of experiments must be done over a
long period of time before something can be safely sold as a drug. Scientists want to be
sure, that it works and that the risk of using it isn’t too high.
American scientists have set up labs in the countries where the rain forests are.
They do studies and research there. They also hire scientists and workers who live in these
countries to help them. This allows the local people to benefit from rain forests research.
They can make money from the rain forest without destroying it, which is very important.
If the rain forest is valuable to them, they will help protect it. The more people who are
trying to conserve the rain forests, the better. Just imagine the cures that might be found
there!

III-Comprehension
Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Sonny Boy lifted the lid of his desk cautiously and peered at the big ripe mango which
was resting on his reading book. There was a great gnawing in his stomach as he had not
eaten since lunch-time and it had been only split pea soup with two dumplings in it. That was
since 12.30 p.m. He wondered if he dared take two quick bites before Mr Callender returned
from the toilet. He put out his hand to take it then drew it away again. It was too big a risk he
decided. The juice would be all over his fingers and, besides, Mr Callender would smell it.
It was a quarter to five. He would wait until five, when he hoped Mr Callender would let
him go home. He bit another piece from the pencil he was holding and his eyes wandered
listlessly round the room and finally fastened on the open door before him from which Mr.
Callender’s plump figure would emerge at any moment. He was writing an essay on ‘Birds’
and there seemed so little he could say. He did not know many birds anyway. There was only
the blackbird and the sparrow, and perhaps seagulls. Why couldn’t Mr Callender give him a
composition on something he knew about – crabbing, for instance? He could write pages
about that.
His mind was brought back abruptly to the present as Mr.
Callender appeared. ‘Finished yet? You don’t have to take the whole
evening to write one piece of composition.’ ‘Yes sir,’ he said. He had
only written six lines which were really only a list of the few birds he
knew, and some like the nightingale and the swallow that he had read
about. It was better to get it over though. To wait longer was only to
prolong the agony.’ ‘Bring it here!’ He rose slowly and pushed back
the chair with his right calf. It escaped harshly and tottered for a
moment, before it crashed to the floor. ‘Put some life in you, boy. That’s all you can do.
“This can liven you up, you know,” and he stretched out his hand towards the leather strap
which remained either curled up like a lazy snake on his desk, or hung languorously from his
shoulder. No one would suspect that there was such a deadly sting in its tail.

Modal Verbs
-Modal verbs (modals) are verbs that add the meaning of logical possibility, ability,
necessity, and permission to verbs, which have a degree of strength from stronger to
weaker.
-Modals come before infinitive verbs and the “to” is removed. Modals do not need to
match their subject in plural agreement, so there is no need to add an “-s” or “-es” ending
to a modal.-Modals will often be seen in sentences that are predicting a future possibility,
describing an ability, giving advice, making requests, or asking for permission. The nine
most common modals are can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, and must.

Perfect Modals
• Would have done
• Could have done
• Should have done
• Must have done
• Can’t have done
• Might have done
• Needn’t have done
We use this form to explain that our choice of action would be different to an action
performed by another person. It can only talk about impossible things (past actions
performed by another person which we cannot change).
• I wouldn’t have sacked Susan. I would have given her an official warning. (You sacked
Susan, but this would be my choice of action)
‘Could’ is the past participle of ‘can’ which is used to speak about ability. When we use
‘could have done’, we use it to speak about actions which a person had the ability to do,
but did not do.
• I could have applied for a work visa when I was living in Japan but I decided to return
home instead. (I had the ability / opportunity but did not do the action)
This form is used to talk about an action which somebody DID NOT do, but which we
think was the correct action, or a good idea.
• He should have bought the VW, not the Fiat. (He didn’t, but I think buying the VW was a
better choice)
He failed his exams last week. He should have studied harder. (He didn’t study hard)
He shouldn’t have shouted. (He did, but the speaker thinks it was a bad idea)
• “I think Paolo must have killed his wife.” (I am certain this happened)
• “We sent everybody an email, so Paul must have known that the meeting had been
77

cancelled.”
We use this form to explain that (in our opinion) something isn’t/wasn’t possible.
• You can’t have seen Paolo in the office yesterday; he’s in Brazil on holiday (so it is not
possible)
This speaks about an action which a person DID do, but which was not necessary.
• It didn’t rain today, so I needn’t have taken an umbrella to work. (I DID take an umbrella,
but it wasn’t necessary)

III-Comprehension
Read the following the passage.
Palaces are known for their beauty and splendor, but they offer little protection against
attacks. It is easy to defend a fortress, but fortresses are not designed with the comfort of a
king or queen in mind. When it comes to structures that are both majestic and well-
fortified, the classic European castle is the pinnacle of design. Across the ages castles
changed, developed, and eventually fell out of use, but they still command the fascination
of our culture.
Castles were originally built in England by Norman invaders in 1066. As William the
Conqueror advanced through England, he fortified key positions to secure the land he had
taken. The castles he built allowed the Norman lords to retreat to safety when threatened
by English rebellion. Castles also served as bases of operation for offensive attacks. Troops
were summoned to, organized around, and deployed from castles. In this way castles
served both offensive and defensive roles in military operations.
As the nobility accumulated wealth, England became increasingly attractive to those
who sought to plunder. Raids by Vikings and other marauders increased in regularity. In
response to these attacks, castle defenses were updated and improved. Arrow-slits were
added. These were small holes in the castle, large enough for an arrow to fit through, which
allowed defenders to fire from nearly invulnerable positions. Towers were built from which
defenders could provide flanking fire. These towers were connected to the castle by
wooden bridges, so that if one tower fell, the rest of the castle was still easy to defend.
Multiple rings of castle walls were constructed, so that even if attackers made it past one
wall, they would be caught on a killing ground between inner and outer walls. Advances
such as these greatly increased the defense of castles.
The demise of castles can ultimately be attributed to gunpowder. Gunpowder was first
introduced to Europe during the 14th century, but the first gunpowder weapons were
unreliable, inaccurate, and weak by later standards. During the 15th century, artillery
became powerful enough to break through stone walls. This greatly undermined the
military role of castles. Castles were then replaced by artillery forts that had no role in civil
administration, and country houses that were indefensible. Though castles no longer serve
81

their original purposes, remaining castles receive millions of visitors each year from those
who wish to experience these majestic vestiges of a time long passed.
Not limited to military purposes, castles also served as offices from which the lord would
administer control over his fiefdom. That is to say, the lord of the land would hold court in
his castle. Those that were socially beneath the lord would come to report the affairs of the
lands that they governed and pay tribute to the lord. They would address disputes, handle
business, feast, and enjoy festivities. In this way castles served as important social centers
in medieval England. Castles also served as symbols of power. Built on prominent sites
overlooking the surrounding areas, castles constantly loomed in the background of many
peasants’ lives and served as a daily reminder of the lord’s strength.
The first castles constructed in England were made from earth and timber. Those who
constructed them took advantage of natural features, such as hills and rivers, to increase
defenses. Since these castles were constructed from wood, they were highly susceptible to
attacks by fire. Wooden castles were gradually replaced by stone, which greatly increased
the strength of these fortifications; however, being made from stone did not make these
castles entirely fireproof. Attackers could hurl flaming objects into the castle through the
windows or ignite the wooden doors. This led to moving the windows and entrances off of
the ground floor and up to the first floor to make them more difficult to access.

III-Comprehension
Read the following the passage
“Flower Power”
When her grandmother’s health began to deteriorate in the fall of 1994, Mary
would make the drive from Washington, DC to Winchester, VA every few days.
She hated highway driving, finding it ugly and monotonous. She preferred to
take meandering back roads to her grandmother’s hospital. When she drove through the
rocky town of Harpers Ferry, the beauty of the rough waters churning at the intersection of
the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers always captivated her.
Toward the end of her journey, Mary had to get on highway 81. It was here that
she discovered a surprising bit of beauty during one of her trips. Along the median of the
highway, there was a long stretch of wildflowers. They were thin and delicate and purple,
and swayed in the wind as if whispering poems to each other.

The first time she saw the flowers, Mary was seized by an uncontrollable urge to pull over
on the highway and yank a bunch from the soil. She carried them into her grandmother’s
room when she arrived at the hospital and placed them in a water pitcher by her bed.
For a moment her grandmother seemed more lucid than usual. She thanked Mary
for the flowers, commented on their beauty and asked where she had gotten them. Mary
was overjoyed by the ability of the flowers to wake something up inside her ailing
grandmother.
Afterwards, Mary began carrying scissors in the car during her trips to visit her
grandmother. She would quickly glide onto the shoulder, jump out of the car, and clip a
bunch of flowers. Each time Mary placed the flowers in the pitcher, her grandmother’s eyes
would light up and they would have a splendid conversation.
One morning in late October, Mary got a call that her grandmother had taken a
turn for the worse. Mary was in such a hurry to get to her grandmother that she sped past
her flower spot. She decided to turn around, head several miles back, and cut a bunch.
Mary arrived at the hospital to find her grandmother very weak and unresponsive.
She placed the flowers in the pitcher and sat down to hold her grandmother’s hand. She felt
a squeeze on her fingers. It was the last conversation they had.
